A. IT. Hayes, Jr.. of San Francisco,
Oal., with his champion bulldog entry,
KndclilTe Advance, carried oft the hon
ors for having: tho best dog at the
Portland Kennel Club's bench show,
which came to a successful close last
night, and was presented with the
President W. M. Davis cup. the trophy
for which eight of the prize-winning
dogs of the show competed.
When Judge Georgo S. Thomas ad
vanced to the center of the judging
ring for the purpose of selecting the
best dog In the show he was met with
a splendid array of talent, and it re
quired all his knowledge of the fine
points of the canine species to pick
the bpst animal. In addition to Hayes'
Kndcliffe Advance, that exhibitor pre
sented his bull bitch St. Queenle, and
the following entries were also lined
up for the judge's decision: Frank E.
AVatkins' white bull terrier Willamette
Starlight; W. B. Fechheimer's fox ter
rier Champion Multnomah Blue; P. B.
Stewart s Airedale Matlock Bob; K. N.
Stevens' cocker spaniel Brownland

Judge Thomas went over the points
of each dog carefully and finally de
cided that Hayes" bulldog was the win
ner. The spectators approved of ills
choice, and the San Francisco exhibitor
received a hearty demonstration of ap
plause as he led his entry from the
ring.
Immediately after awarding this prize
Frank 11 Watkins' white bull terrier was
declared to be the best doff of opposite
sex to the winner in the show andvre
ceived the J. O. Hoyt cup offered for that
cvept. Mr. Watkins' handsome entry was
the center of an admiring throng as he
proudly led the handsome bitch from the
ring. Judge Thomas afterwards said that
in his opinion Willamette Starlight is one
of the very best white terriers In the
United States, and as he has had occasion
to judge a number of them in the East
where they are commoner than in Port
land, the Portland dog, now about one
year old, is likely to prove a National
winner.
After the judging of these two awards
tho balance of the programme was taken
up in the presenting of the cups to the
winners of the different classes, and the
large percentage of tine big crowd present
crowded about the ring to watch the
awarding of the cups by President Davis.
Kighty-one cups were presented to the
owners of winners and this matter con
sumed considerable time.
Judge Thomas will remain in Portland
until Tuesday, when he will visit Seattle
for a short stay before going to Van
couver, B. C, where ho Us scheduled to
judge a bench show. May 13 he will Judge
the bench show at Hackensack, N. J.,
nd on May 17, the show at Philadelphia.
The remarkable feature of the show Just
closed is the fact that not one of Judge
Thomas' decisions was questioned,
which indicates that he is a highly effi
cient referee on matters pertaining to the
canine species.

It is reported from China that the old
est newspaper in the world, the Pekin
Gazette, is about to suspend publication.
The first number appeared In A. D. 911.
end since 1351, more than a century before
tho discovery of .America, it has appeared
regularly every week.
The Pekin Gazette has published a daily
budget of the imperial court news and
has been a repository of edicts from the
throne, memorials from Provincial Gov
ernors ajid reports from Chinese offlcialis.
It would be wrong to infer that its con
sents were always dry. Frequently the
Gazette has contained news of great In
terest to the world and information Illu
minating one phase or another of Chinese
character or. the governmental regime.
Perhaps we read one day that not only
the soldier who had stolen 30 boxes of
bullets had been severely punished, but
the officer whose duty it was to inspect
the stores and see that they were Intact
was condemned to 80 blows and dismissed
from the service. This showed the grave
responsibility Imposed upon Chinese of
ficials. It was Li Hung Chang who reported
that the officials along the Yung-ting
River had risked their lives in their ef
forts to prevent it from inundating the
surrounding country, and in the same re
port he recommended that though they
tried to do what was beyond the power of
man they should be stripped of their
buttons or deprived of their rank because
they failed to avert the flood.
We learned from the Gazette that the
explanation of moral maxims to the peo
ple was a favorite prescription for
amending their shortcomings. One day a
memorial in the paper said that as the
inhabitants of one of the provinces were
turbulent competent persons had been ap
pointed to explain to them the maxims of
the sacred edicts with the hope of improv
ing their character.
A few years ago a report In the Gazette
from the "Governor of Yunnan said that
In some pf the country districts the vil
lagers had a horrible custom of burning
to death any man caught stealing corn
or fruit in the fields. Then followed de
tailed accounts of some of these events.
The files of the venerable paper are
among the curiosities of typography.
During a part of the ISth century It was
printed in the imperial palace from mov
able copper type, and in the last 80 years
from movable type carved out of wood.
The Chinese government will now sup
plant the publication by the Government
Gazette, which will be much larger and
conducted along more modern lines. It
will be the official government organ.
