Captain Thomas Stream, of the
schooner W. G. Watson, recently ac
quitted by a jury In Ihc Superior Court
in Momentum of the rharo of asHauIt
with Intent to kill Albert Helli. a sailor
on the Watson, lias passed through a
number of thrilling- experiences, although
he Is JiiKt past his th year. His wife,
a few years younger, and a slender lit
tie woman, has boon with her husband
through each of his hairbreadth escapes
and was present nt the t rial, which
meant a term of imprisonment if the
case had gone the other way.
Captain Stream is the son of Captain
A. T. Stream, a well-known commander
on the Pact He Coast, front whom the
younRer man inherits his love for the
sea.
Captain Tom Stream started his career
as a seafaring individual when only 14
years old, when he went as a cook on
a vessel to A la ska. Kater on he was
In the Cnited States Government trans
port service and then served in different
capacities on coastwise vessels. At the
early age of it he received his master's
papers, passing a rtrst-clnss examination.
His rtrst command was the tujr Cudahy,
which plies on Grays Harbor. Front the
t'udahy he went to the powerful tin?
Darin, and tlton became master of the
schooner Abbie.
On the last day of December. IHnl, he
was married at jSan Kiancisco. and on
January 1. with tits bride, took
passage on the steamer Walla Walla,
mailing from San Francisco to Seattle.
The Walia Walla foundered and Captain
Stream and his wife were 'M hours on
the open sea in a lifeboat before being
picked up. Fifty of the passengers went
down with the steamer. Captain Stream
and his wife lost all their clothing and
their wedding presents.
In V)o Captain Stream was part owner
and commander of the schooner Kmma
v"lau'!lna. winch bad to be abandoned off
the Washington coast. Mrs. Stream was
with her husband and was placed in a
yawl in a raging sea and transferred to
the schooner Mary Winkleman. which
stood by. A sensational story to the
effect that Mrs Stream was lashed to
a mast and sent adrift lo bo picked up
by the Winkolman was sent out to the
newspapers, but even though the sea
was terribly roujfh Mrs. Stream did not
wet her feet in making the transfer, it
was six days later when she a train met
her husband, who. with other members
of the crew of the Claudina, was saved.
The wrevk of the Oaudina was found
later on the shore at the Quinault Indian
Ajcency. Captain and Mrs. Stream again
lost ail of their personal effects in the
Claudina wreck.
Tiie shooting affray on the schooner
Watson occurred while Mrs. Stream was
aboard. Mrs. Stream is a talented young
woman and on account of her several
experiences has now no fear of the sea
faring life, going with her husbajid on
every voyav he has made so far. The
Watson is probably the only small sail
ing vessel on the Coast with a piano in
the cabin, but inasmuch as Mrs. Stream
is a musician the piano helps to while
away a few hours of the dull monotony
of an ocean voyage on a sailing craft.
The Watson sailed from Grays Harbor
Friday morntna. March 27. and Mrs.
Stream was on board. Captain Stream is
not only young but one of the hand
somest of men. !
