Big Sower Projected.
Puring the week a project was set In

and Rose City Park Addition. Including

Is a large territory and rapidly filling
up with new dwellings, but It is not ex
pected that this sewer can be built, in
side of from three to five years, and

time So that it can he built within five
veara at least. Mount Tabor, north of
Fast Morrison Street, is in weed of
srwers at present. A sewer has tusKbeen
laid on Helnion: .ftreet. but it serves only
a limited aistrlct on either side, while
along and north of the Base Line road,
srwers are needed at once..
Montavilla is growing rapidly in "fw
dwellings. Rose City Park will grow
rapidlv, more than W homes having l-en
protected there for this year. The cost of
this proposed sewer system will bo ascer
tained bv the Citv Klisinrer. Kxpcri-nce
of all localities Is that It takes from
five to ten years of agitation to get such
an undertaking under way. but the fact
that It has been started demonstrates
that tho city Is pushing its way eastward.
In Center addition, which is east of the

being erected in the territory extending
toward the grounds of the Country Club.

Several Factories Proposed.
At Maegly Junction, on the Fefiin
sula. the push club has set in motion
ft movement to secure an adequate
passenger and freight depot for gen
eral and manufacturing purposes. Klve
manufacturing concerns are now ready
to otart building plants on sites se
rured near this junction as soon as
they re assured of ample depot and
telegraph facilities. The promoters of
these factories have already taken up
the matter of a depot with the Hill
eompanv and the push club will second
their efforts. R. ?. Ftrand. president
of the club, says that he looks for the
establishment of a great many small
factories along the Columbia Boule
vard during the year, where they will
be near to the O. K. N. and Hill rail
ways. Ye know these concerns are com
ing." said Mr. Brand, "because of the
constant Inquiries being made for sites.
I look for this district on Columbia
Plough to become one of the most ex
tensive manufacturing sections on this
Coast. Conditions here are favorable
for manufactures. We will look after
the transportation and depot questions
closely, for on these depend the exist
ence of these concerns. "We Intend to
make preparations for a manufactur
ing center by Improving streets, get
ting water, sewers and electric lights.
Our regular committees have all these
matters In hand."
On the Peninsula two new tracts have
just been platted and placed on the
market. The Kenwood Land Company
has Invested $400,000 in a tract on Co
lumbia Boulevard. A business district
has been set apart facing on Columbia
Poulevard. where nothing but brick,
steel, stone or reinforced concrete
structures will be allowed. In the
residence portion it Is required that
houses must be set 16 feet back from
the sidewalks to secure uniformity,
l.oveleigh, a new tract, has been plat
ted by the Brong-Stecle Company. It
contains Si0 lots. In both tracts lots
a-e said to have been selling ever since
they were put on the market.
Pave With Crushed Rnrt.
It was in Multnomah Addition where
the first stepe were taken to Improve
all the streets. This plan has been
carried out. so that practically all the
streets In this addition will be paved
with crushed rock. Recent contracts
have been let on Albina avenue. Blan
dena. avenue. Beech street. Borlhwick.
Fargo and several other streets. M. E.
Thompson says not only in street im
provements is that section going for
ward, but in building also. Residence
and business locations are celling well.
r. J. Kllnn has taken permits for
eight houses In Multnomah Addition of
44000 each. The street pavements and
buildings under way and projected in
Multnomah Addition will cost over
l-'OO.OOO. These street Improvements
are the result of work of the -Multnomah
Improvement Club.
In anticipation of a time when a new
schoolhouse will be needed In Albina
Homestead, which Is not far off, the
school district purchased during- the
week Oeorge Bosehlin's property. In
cluding lots 1. I. S. 4. 1.1, 14, 15 and 1I,
block 10. for J10.50D. The Highland and
Thompson buildings, both large struc
tures, are filled to overflowing and need
relief. The Work secured la on Tremont
street, between Mallory and Oarfleld ave
nues. A few ye.ira ago the district owned
a half block and had a schoolhouse In
Albina Homestead, hut sold It and moved
the building to Highland, and It now buys
a aito in the territory It then abandoned.
Won Id Sell Old Sire.
It la estimated by those working; for
a modern schoolhouse to replace the
Wllltams-avenue building that the
ground now occupied can be sold for
$55,000 or $110,000 for business pur
poses, which would nearly cover the
cost of a y-room building. The block
Is on the corner of Williams avenue
and Russell street, in the heart of he
business section of Albina. ft Is urged
that the ground can bo used for business
purposes only. However. there are
some who believe that the district
should not sell any of Its ground, no
matter where located, on the theory
that It will be needed In the future.
Mrs. Rosa B. Eckenberger purchased
the past week a "H-acre traet near
the Sandy road, adjoining the electric
addition, of A. I- fpson for $7700. At
Woodlawn A. J. Pillon purchased from
J. W. tlrlfflth quarter-block on Kast
Ninth street for $2500.
At Portsmouth J. F. Nowltn sold to
Alice A. Benils lots 1? and 20. block

Show Sunnysido's Growth.
In speaking of the growth of Sunny
side, K. C. Minor, who keeps in touch
with renting properties. real estate
sales and new buildings In that sec
tion, said:
Snnnyslde was the first suburb on
the Fast Side to he exploited. That was
IS years ago. Its progress hss been
steady. we think we have One of
the finest auhurbs of Portland. Bel
mont street has Just been paved with
hard-surface material to Kast Twen
tieth street, and it will be improved on
to the Willamette River. While sales
of residence property have been slow,
they have been constant. New houses
are' building- all through Sunnyslde,
and especially south Of Ha wthorne ave
nue to Section Line road. There are
few houses for rent, but there Is con
stant inquiry from people for houses
to rent, who want to Jive in Sunny
side. The Sunnysldo Congregational
Church has already started a guove
ment for a new edifice which will cost

veloped on Hawthorne avenue. We
think- in Sunnyride that we are mak
ing n much progress as any qther

" Proppeet of Theater.
The q iostton of a theater for the
Fast Side Is being agitated, fjeorge
Pilworth made a report to the Business
Men's Club Thursday night on what is
being done. He said that negotiations
had been started with the trustees of
Orient Lodge. I. O. O. F.. which has
had plans drawn for a two-story re
inforced concrete temple on East Sixth
and Alder streets, to have them add
another story for a medium-size thea
ter, but that, he said, will depend on
whether the trustees can lease the
theater for a long term. Mr. Pilworth
further snld that some of the theater
managers of the West Side had been
looking over the Kast Side with a
view to having a theater built, but no
dctinite action hAd been taken. He
expressed the opinion that a theater
will be built on tne'Kast Side In the
near future, basing his conclusions on
what llic-iter managers have said to
him on the suhject, but that It must
come through the theater combine, and
not from the outside.
Appoints Murray Controller.
WASHINGTON. April IS. The Presi
dent today eent to the Senate the nomi
nation of Lawrence O. Murray to be
Controller of the Currency, vice Wil
liam B. Ridgely, resigned.
