.At a meeting Friday night, of the grain
standard committee of the Chamber of
Commerce, Peter Kerr was re-elected
chairman for the ensuing year. Alex Mc
.Ayeal wa.- re-elected secretary. The
committee Is now composed of W. J.
Burns, T. B. 'Wilcox, R. Kennedy, C. B.
4'tirry, Peter Kerr and Henry Lawshe.
The grain standards established by this
committee of the Chamber of Commerce
are readily received in all the grain cen
ters of this country and Europe, and in
many Instances are considered more re
l.able than those of commissions elected
through political methods. The business
of the committee U growing rapidly and
through its operations Portland has come
to he regarded as the great grain shipping
port of the Pacific Coast.

John G. Mantz Dead. John G. Mentz,
for the past ten' years a resident of Port
laud, died yesterday at his home, 229
Klcvrnth street, of tubercolosls. Deceased
was 3o years old and was born in Amster
dam. Holland. lie came to the United
Htates when a young man and resided In
Portland the greater part of the time.
Funeral services will be held at Finlcy's
t'hapel this afternoon at 2 o'clock, ln

Funeral of S. B. Alford. The fu
neral of Samuel E. Alford, who died at
his home. T9 Oxford street, April 10, was
held yesterday afternoon, at the Portland
( Yematorf um. Members of Lincoln-Garfield
Post No. 3, (i. A. R-, and Eureka
I'ouncll, No. 3M, Knights and ladies of
Security, attended the services. Mr.
Alford was " years old.

Rhododendrons at Forestrt Building.
Dr. Dav Daffety. of the Park Board,
received this week 100 rhododendron plants

the Forestry building grounds. These
plants were set out Friday and are ex
pected to make an attractive feature at

Many Amusements Are Planned for
Those Who Attend the Benefit
for Uie Baby Home.
Preparations for the Knights Tem
plar grand charity ball at the new
Masonic Temple, April 30, for the ben
efit of the Baby Home, are going along
rapidly.
J. G. Mack, who has charge of the
decorations, has arranged for a large
electric maltese cross to be placed .in
the east end of the ballroom. This will
be very beautiful when lighted up
and is the principal emblem of the
order. There will be other decorations
besides the cross.
George H. Hill, chairman of the com
mittee on refreshments, will have
dainty and appetizing surprises in
store for the Commandery guests. Re
freshments will be served from 10 P.
M.
B. H. Nlcol, who is at the head of the
committee on entertainment, has ar
ranged for the Wilder Harp and Strinff
'Quartet to play the latest musical
numbers for the entertainment of those
who do not care' to -oance. Properly
equipped card tables wilj be supplied
for those who prefer that means of
enjoying the evening.
The Portland Symphony Orchestra,
and Military Bund of 20 pieces, under
the management nf F. W. Prasp, has
been engaged to play the dance music
and the dancers can expect snappy
two-steps and dreamy waltzes. An en
tirely new innovation in rendering the
two-steps and waltzes will be adopted
on this occasion, which the committee
believes will meet with the hearty ap
proval of all. This is, however, kept a
strict secret. which every one Is
pledged not to reveal. The dance pro
gramme is now in course of prepara
tion, and will be the most beautiful and
elaborate ever furnished for a ball.
These will serve as souvenirs of the
occasion.

the candidates is John D. Wilcox, who Is.

number of Oregonlans. as he has lived in

well qualified to appreciate the wants of
the state In which he was born and has
lived so long. Mr. Wilcox Is by profes
sion a lawyer, having been admitted to
the bar In California in 1886. In that
year he returned to Portland and formed
a law partnership with the late Senator
John H. Mitchell, who for over 20 years
was a Arm believer in the election of
United States Senators by vote of the
people.

that of I-arkey Logan, who is charged
with fatally stabbing another Indian on
the Siletz -reservation. Logan will be

Public Library Notes
There have been placed in the East
Side Branch Library some very fine ste
reoscopic views of each, of the following
countries: Egypt, England, France. Ger
many, Greece, Italy, Norway and Pal
. estine. Each set colnsists of 100 beau
tifully taken photographs of the famous
places, buildings and scenesthroughout
the country; including also many pictures
which give a clear idea of the character
and customs of the people. These sets
of pictures, together with the accompany
ing stereoscopes and handbooks, may be
taken out in accordance with the usual
'rules for the circulation of books, and
they will prove Invaluable to travel study
clubs and to history and literature
classes in the schools, as weft as afford
ing a great deal of pleasure and informa
tion to the other patrons of the library.
A most interesting and .unusual exhibit
of mounted butterflies loaned by Mrs. W.
M. Ladd will be on exhibition at the
Sellwood branch from April 15 to May 1.
This is a rare opportunity to see butter
flies and moths beautifully mounted and
from all' countries. There Is a fine coir
lection of Oregon and West Coast but
terflies, many from all parts of the
United States and also from the tropical
countries where butterflies and moths
are as wonderful as lovely jewels.
The Troutdale subscription library was
reopened on April 7 as a free library and
reading-room, under the care of the
Portland Public Library. It will be open
every week day from 3 . to 5:30 In the
afternoon, and from 7 to 9:30 In the evening.-
Mrs. McCamman has been ap
pointed custodian. Several hundred vol
umes have been sent out from the cen
tral library, and these,: with the volumes
on the shelves, which are owned by the
local association, will ' make a deposit
collection of about 1000. These books
cover a wide range of subjects and will
Interest both grown people and children.
In addition, there will be a weekly de
livery of books specially asked for from
the 'central library. Daily papers and
magazines will be found on file. This
rural library will be' a convenient dis
tributing point not only for those living
at Troutdale. but also for the farmers m
that part of the county.
FULTON HERE TUESDAY
Senator Will Return to Portland to
Answer, Heney.
In an address to .be delivered in Port
land Tuesday night. Senator Fulton will
reply to any charges Francis J. Heney
may have made in any of his public ad
dresses either in Portland or at Salem.
Senator Fulton had intended devoting the
closing week of the campaign in Eastern
Oregon, reserving - Thursday night tor
Portland, but at the urgent request of
his friends he has decided to alter his
plans and give the last three days of
the campaign to Portland and vicinity for
the purpose of refuting Mr. Heney's ac
cusations. The Senator, will be in Port
land Tuesday night, when he will address
a meeting on the West Side. The fol
lowing night he will speak to the people
of Oregon City, closing his brief two
weeks' campaign with a big meeting on
the East Side, Thursday night, the day
before the primary election,

Los Angeles Preaehers Bring About
Change on Programme.
LOS ANGELES, Cal., April 11. The
movement of the Church Federation of
this city in opposition to the proposed
parade of battleships at San Pedro on
Easter Sunday, the day following the
fleet's arrival in the harbor, has re
sulted In the transmission of a request
from Rear-Admiral Evans at Paso
Robles to Rear-Admiral Thomas, com
manding the squadron, that will
change the original programme pro
viding for division of the fleet after
Its arrival.
Admiral Thomas is requested to or
der the various divisions to drop out
at the appointed anchorages, . which
w-111 prevent any movement of ships on
Easter Sunday.
