Electing Planned for March 80 and
31 Most Important Religious
Gatherings of Year.
What promises to be one of the most
significant events of the year in church
circles will be the inauguration of the
Laymen's Missionary Movement in Port
land at a meeting to be held on Monday
and Tuesday. March 30 and 31. The move
ment was started In New York City in
19"6. and la interdenominational In scope.
Its purpose is to project a campaign of
education in missionary work among lay
men; to rovise a plan for the evangeliza
tion of the world in this generation: to
form a centennial commission of laymen
to visit the mission fields and report their
findings to the home churches.
During the first year of its existence the
organization secured tho indorsement of
nil the foreign mission boards of the
United States and Canada. It completed
its centennial commission of GO laymen
and some of the members have already
returned from their investigations abroad
and are reporting their findings. One of
its alms is to extend the missionary field
in China.
J. Campbell White, of New York City,
general secretary of the movement, is now
making a tour of the Pacific Coast for
t lie purpose of morn fully explaining the
progress and aims of the organization.
Tlicro will be a banquet at the Hotel
Portland on the night of March 30, which
will be attended by ano local churchmen
V and others. Report of committees show,
ing the, present status of local resource
for all missionary purposes in. the different
denominations will be presented, to be
followed by an address by Secretary
Whlt.
Tuesday. March .11. will be devoted to
interdenominational rallies of women and
young people as the local committee may
arrange, to be followed that night hy a
maw meeting of laymen In the White
Temple to hear full reports of commit
ters on advance work and the conclud
es address of Secretary 'White.
The local executive committee, which is
composed of a representative from each
of tho churches of the city, and which
will havo charge of all arrangements, is
