THE early robin is tuning up his
lute, the tiny green leaf la beginning-
to unfold and milady of
fashion, even though deep in the
Lenten "sackcloth and ashes' of pen
ance, finds it hard to keep her thoughts
from the coming of Spring and from
the ever new joy and annual glory of
her new Easter bonnet.
What will the new Easier millinery
be like, and what the general trend
In shape, material and trtmminp?
These are questions that recur annu
ally, to the great joy of femininity and
ttte general demoralization of the mas
culine check, book but the answer this
fc?prins;, according to the authoritative
forecasts of those who ouKht to know,
holds more delightful surprises than
ever before.
To begin with, the milliners will
fairly revel In, colors, and will all but
exhaust the supply of the country in
the lavish use of those sheer, exquis
itely feminine, ana Universally becom
ing materials tnat come under the head
of fancy nets, chiffons and mallnes.
"Made." hats will be the thinp, and in
the making will be swallowed up milions
of dollars' worth of the daintiest and
most pliable of fancy braids, the rich
est and most beautifully tinted of rib
bons, and the most exquisite of artificial
cilken flowers and artificial fruits, to say
nothing of sweeping ostrich plumes, ex
pensive novelty feathers and immense
jnantitie of the new "hussar" or "grena
dier" brushes.
Since the top note of the new Spring
bats will be originality and individuality,
it la rather diflicult to reliably foretell just
what the most popular mode will be, but
It is already settled that the new milli
nery will be marked by irrejrular curves,
large crown effect in flowers, meshes and
fancy braidt. and extremely high and
jaunty trimming.
From the accompanying pictures, a few
hints of Baster glories may be gleaned,
l'-ach is an exclusive pattern hat just ar
rived from New York and fresh from
th bandboxes of a local establishment.
The millnery feature of the day. and one
of the very smartest things of the season,
is shown in picture No. 2, in the high,
bright red "hussar cockade, otherwise
known as the "grenadier" plume. The
up-rollinr brim of Tuscan straw demon
strates the Irregular curves thit will pre

ferent blossoms. The milliner this season
enters the ranks of "Nature fakers' and
invites 'Presidential comment not only in
red violets and pink forget-me-nots, but
In countless other combinations of color
undreamed of by Mother Nature. '
That fruit will have it place in popu
lar feminine favor this season is shown
by picture No. 1, but the tendency towards
chiffons and other soft stuffs is shown
even- in this hat. where the clusters of
fruit are imbedded In dainty laces and
dotted meshes. Thie hat illustrates the
type of small brim and lange crown which
will be one of the smartest effects in
vogue. Out from the left side, and sweep
ing upward and backward jut two smart
"hussar" brushes, in a dainty yellowish
brown that blends beautifully with the
cream tones of the net and hice and the
pinkish blush of the artificial peaches.
The "hussar" brush, or cockade, comes
in several varieties, and in many tones,
two of the varieties being shown in No.
1 and No. 2. In pompoms and aigrettes
the same effect Is sought and the same
smart touch of airy height Is given. This
is illustrated in No. 3. where a white
"tree aigrette" above "butterfly wings" of
wired black point d'esprtt are poised on &
dainty foundation of black point d'esprit
net and black chrysanthemum braid; by
the way. the chrysanthemum braid, once
so popular, but forgotten for so many sea
sons, has been revived and will be feat
ured m one of the smartest feature of
the new hats. Its dressy, elaborate effect
assista materially la the general .tre.nd
towards flufflnees and dainty elaborateness
and It will be seen in all the new colors.
Incidentally, under the head of new
colors, it will be interesting to note the
wide variety of tones that have been
devised.- Light browns will be ex
tremely popular, and within this range
come several rich copper tones and
duller -khaki colors, burnt leather
shades, saffron tints and dainty terra
cottas that blend into the rose shades.
Then there is the handsome reddish
brown, a new tone known a Morocco,
which will be modish in trimmings. In
the new blues there is the duckwlng
tint, which is going to be extremely
popular, and the most important blue
of the season, known as the Louts XVI
tone; peacock blue and Nattier, Dresden,
indigo and flax blues are also due for
popularity in the blue- shades. . Many
different blue shades will be blended to
gether in the smart hats, and one of the
newest ideas is the black hat with the
blue facing and trimming. Old rose and
cerise will also be much used. Then there
will be a prevalence of American beauty
shades, natural geranium, deep Jacque
menot and poppy tints. Many shades of
gold and corn, and of green will be used
in the straws and trimmings. 9ulphur.
barley color, ma ire and champagne will
be principally used for foundational col
prs. The good, reliable and ever-popular leg
horn is with us aeain- this season, with
slashes In brim and crown. v filled with
daintily shirred and- embroidered nets,
Shirrings of fine fabrics for frames and
crowns in ail colors, and particular lac in
creaiAs and blacks, will mark the Spring
hats throughout and are employed in
every manner of fetching combinations.
AJiln to the graceful leghorn is the
large, sweeping Tuscan hat, of Tuscan
straw, a type of which is shown in No.
4. It is upon hats of this type that the
exquisite "weeping willow" ostrich plumes
will be most extensively used. Two of
these plumes are shown on this hat,
sweeping over the left curl of the brim,
and with their stems Imbedded in a mass
of beautifully embroidered white point
d'esprit. The large fancy hatpin shown
at the front is of fine filagree silver and
gold; the large fancy hatpin, particularly
in the elaborately fllagreed and Oriental
patterns, will be employed lavishly in the
smart millinery.
That wings have not gone out, but will
be used more lavishly than ever, is shown
in No. 6, where four wings are spread
across the front of the crown and two
large fancy hatpins, with a double cravat
bow of velvet ribbon to complete the trim
ming and enhance the broad crown effect.
Another type of sweeping brim and lav
ish plumage, of the "weeping willow"
style, is shown in No. 5. The pom-pom is
formed of many yards of chiffon. This
hat is of the "sweet simplicity" type, a
type which always makes heavy havoc

These are only a few of the great vari
ety of Easter offerings by which Port
land femininity will be driven distracted
in making a single selection, but the one
great universal solace Is that there will
be shapes and tones and style of trim
mings suited to every individual, and that
if only the right eelection be made,
Easter morning will find each one happy
in the knowledge that her annual glory
of Gaster millinery is not only beautiful
in itself, with smartness and dash thrown

Intimate friend.
Ever since woman's beauty held
sway over man and brought her power,
Influence and wealth, she has sought a
way to stay the processes of old age
and banish deep lines and furrows
from her brow.
Chemists, beauty doctors and skin
specialists have for centuries past
vainly tried to fathom the sealed se
crets of nature and find a way to keep
the beauty of youth in a woman's face
and form.
Harriett Meta was no exception to the
genera rule of women. Trouble and
worry left their unsightly lines and
marks upon her face. She saw the
beauty of her youth giving way to the
heavy Imprints of coming age.
Her first resort was to face massage,
cold creams and steaming pots; then
next to beauty specialists, but all In
vain. The wrinkles seemed, if any
thing, to grow deeper and deeper. Mas
sago even appeared to stretch the
skin: more wrinkles oame. She had
spent all the money she could afford to
spend, and was ready to give up in
despair, when one day a" friend made
a happy suggestion.
This gave her a brilliant idea. She
set to work on the thing herself, and
after several months' hard labor and
almost endless experimenting she suc
ceeded In producing .a wrinkle remover
entirely different from anything she
had seen or beard of. She tried it on
herself, and lo! and behold. It worked
a wonderful transformation In a sin
gle night; she tried it the second
night, and her wrinkles were prac
tically ronc. a tnira mgnt tnree
treatments in all and her wrinkles
had entirely disappeared, and her skin
was soft, clear, rosy and smooth.
Many others also have used this re
markable process with wonderful re
sults. Mrs. J. K. Black, of, Tonkers, N. T.,
writes: "When I look into the glass
I scarcely know myself, so great Is the
improvement. My wrinkles have en
tirely gone." Miss Gladys Desmond,
the actress, of Pittsburg. Pa., says:
"Your treatment made my wrinkles
disappear In one right. It Is certainly
a. Godsend to womankind. I tried cold
creams, skin foods and various adver
tised wrinkle removers, but they allj
failed absolutely, and I confess I was j
very sceptical about your treatment,!
but in one night my scepticism had
entirely vanished. When I looked at j
my face on the following morning and!
saw what a wonderful transformation
had taken place I was sure at last I
had found the right thing.""
In speaking of her discovery. Miss
Meta says: "Yes, I know, it sounds!
too good to be true, but really I do
not think removing wrinkles Is half
so wonderful as the telephone. Before
the telephone was Invented it appeared,
ridiculous to think of talking from
New York to Chicago.
"Those who have used cold creams,
etc., cannot understand how my treat
ment can act so quickly. Yet, after
all. it Is very simple, and I wonder
that some one did not discover the pro
cess long ago. My letters from pa
tients tell the whole story. Here is
one from a lady who says my treat
ment made her look twenty years
younger,1 also letters from many others.
1 do not see how anyone can doubt
in the face of such testimony as this.
I tried cold creams, massage, etc., my
self, without results, and I can thor
oughly -sympathize with those who
have tried to get rid of wrinkles, and
I am truly glad that I feel I can now
offer womankind a surer and a shorter
way.
"I will give further particulars to
all those who write me within the next
ten days. I must exact a promise of
secrecy from everyone for my own
protection Ijeforo I give fuir informa
tion if you can use my treatment on
yourself or In your own family, but
you must not ten wnat it is to outsiders.
"J guarantee my treatment will In
no way injure your skin. On the con
trary, it will give It a soft, velvety
feeling, and greatly improve your com
plexion, as well as banish unsightly
lines and wrinkles. It takes only a
few minutes to sise It.
