BLACKMAIL ON ROYAL DUKE
1HAXCIS OF BAVARIA SITES A
. FABMEIt FOTt lIOLl-VP.
Kays He Was Falsely Accused of ln-
jurlns Horse With Auto Bud
Mobbed by Peasants.
MUNICH. March 14 The hearing of
the suit brYiught by iDuke Francis Joseph
of Bavaria against a farmer named Hof
maire, who recently was successful In
blackmailing the Duke when his high
ness was nutomobiUng in the vicinity of
Bamberg, has been fixed for next Mon
day. The Duke considers that the blackmail
ing was prearranged. Hofmaire, accord
ing to the Duke, saw the automobile
approaching along the road, unharnessed
his horse, which was attached to a farm
wagon, and purposely Inflicted a serious'
wound upon the animal.
When the Duko came up, he stopped to
, ask what was wrong and offered his as
sistance. Hofmaire thereupon accused
his highness of having collided with
his wagon and caused .the Injury to
the horse. A crowd of peasants then
appeared and- collected around the motor
car and threatened the Duke, refusing to
let him depart until he had paid over to
Hofmaire all the money he had in his
possession and promised to forward to
the farmer an additional sum of WO.
. The Prince Regent of Bavaria advised
the Duko to bring suit against Hofmaire,
particularly as there was reason to be
lieve that this method of blackmailing
. was becoming popular.
