Oregon Music Festival to Be Held in April
CHORUS OF 300 VOICES, AND CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ARE FEATURES
10
G1EDIT
THE advent of Ilerr Adolph Ros
cnbeckcr and the Chicago Sym
phony Orchestra, the latter con
sisting1 of 6.1 musicians, mat" be ex
pected in the Armory, this city,-April
10-11-12, to take part In Oregon's An
nual Music Festival. The vocal solo
ists will be; Genevieve Clark "Wilson,
soprano; Rose Lutlger Gannon, con
tralto; Joliji B. Miller, tenor; and Ar
thur Mlddleton, bass. A chorus of 300
voice will assist.
The concert of the first evening will
be mainly orchestral, the chorus, how
ever, will appear in Max Bruch's short
cantata "Fair Kllen," which with its
stirring dramatic music, is sure to
pit-ape. The next afternoon, that of
SRtu:ilay. an orrhrstral concert will be
if 1 ven. and in the evening the chorus
attraction will be A. Goring Thomas'
"The Swan and the Skylark,' which
in the most pretentious -work after the
''Moswlalu to be presented. "The Swan
and thM Skylark" lias never been heard
in this city, and probably never before
on this Pacific Coiist. It is not often
Siven, owing to the great difficulties
of the. rhorus. work, but has been pre
sented in Kastcrn cities by the big or
atorio societies, and is included in the
repertoire of all oratorio singers of
note. The music is beautiful, going
from the madness of the death chant
of the Swan, wlil h typifies death and
lspair, to the Joyousness of the Sum
mer Song of the Skylark, which typi
fies joy and triumph. The text is se
lected from Uemuns, Keats and Shell
ley. The stellar event of the festival,
wtH be the presentation of the "Mes
siah," Palm Sunday afternoon. It has
been many yeaxes since the "Messiah"
lias been given in this city, with a
large chorus, nnd coming as it does,
ss a celebration of Palm Sunday, it
promises to draw out the biggest crowd
of the event. The chorus will give
nix numbers, including the best thor
Vses In the oratario, and the soloists will
ftjve the usual solos. The chorus will
hATeaf tcr, until further notice, meet
for1, rehearsal every Monday and Wed
nelay nights, at 8 o'clock at Eilers
3 1 a f" . Tark and Washington streets,
undr the direction of W. H. "Boyer. It
Im h-oyied to have a chorus of 3u0 voices.

The whole world operates ou credit.' Why shouldn't the indrdual? The average man can't possibly pay cash for everything he wants. What
right, therefore, has the merchant to make borrowing any harder for his customers than the hanks make it for him? - A study of the subject
reveals the fact that credit on commodities is a National necessity. We not only proceed upon that basjs of relief, but we make our. credit
system clean, comfortable, dignified and desirable. Ours is not the old
plan that made life a burden for buyers. It has experienced an uplift,
and it is recorded for the good it will accomplish, not only for you, but
for us.

ANNUAL DINNER OF CLUB
Xew Feature by-Men of First Con--gregatlonal
Church.
An occasion of unusual interest was
the regular monthly meeting of the Men's
Club of the First Congregational Church
last Monday night. This meeting result
ed in the Inauguration of what the club
designs shall be an annual literary and
eocial function hereafter, to be partici
pated in by all members of the church
and congregation. It is the determina
tion of the club to dispel the idea which
prevails in some minds that churches are
ecclesiastical cemeteries, and to demon
strate by precept . and example that the
"glad hand" of welcome will be extended
to all who come within the range of Its
membership.
Plates were laid for more than 200 men
and women Monday night, and an excel
lent dinner served by a score of active
young men, after which an informal pro
gramme was rendered as follows; Zither
solo, John Boeckli; base solo. Stuart Me
Guire; acts In ventriloquism and imper
sonations, W. A. Coughlan. Following
the exercises. Harold G. Rice gave an
interesting and instructive illustrated lec
ture on ''The First. Rush to Nome in
1!00," he being among the first to go
there from Portland with a stock of
merchandise. The lecture was illustrated
with lantern slides of views taken at the
time. The closing feature of the evening
was the presentation to the church of a
life-size buet portrait of the recent pas
tor. Rev. Elwin Lincoln House, T. D-,
the donation of Tr. Henry W. Coe, by
M. C. George. The response was by El
B. McXaugliton, president of the Men's
Club, on behalf of the trustees, and also
by Dr. Dyott, the present pastor.
