Death of Edna Wilhelmina Dow.
After an illness of several wueks Kdna
"Wilhelmina Dow, tha youngest daughter
of Mr. and Mrs). O.. L. Dow, died at her
home, 046 Clay street, February 24, aged
9 years, 2 months and 1 days. The fu
neral was held at the Zlon Lutheran
"hurch. on the following Wednesday,
Kev. Mr. Behrena conducting the services.
The remains were interred in Lone Jftr
C'emetery. The young girl had been a
pupil at Ladd school for several years,
having Just completed the fourth grade.
Bhe was much loved by ber teachers and
classmates, being of a very gentle disposi
tion, and always faithful in her small
duties, ciix little girls from her class
acted an honorary pallbearers, and many
beautiful flowers were sent by her little
friends. During the last few days of her
illness though unable to speak, she
showed her perfect trust by folding her
thin little hands in prayer.
Board of Trade Journai The an
nual, number of the Board of Trade
Journal, which has just been received
from the printers, contains much of in
terest regarding the resources of the
various sections of the state and should
prove valuable as advertising literature.
Most of the space is devoted to statistics
covering each county in - the state ar
ranged in such a way as to appeal
strongly to the prospective homeseeker.
Several special articles covering financial,
real estate and commercial operation in
Portland are also Included. Fred Muller,
secretary of the Board, contributes an
article on the plans of the organization
which were recently inaugurated. The
journal is illustrated with a number of
halftones of characteristic Oregon scenes.
Tbb newspapers have been dealing
lately with, the Insurance situation of New
York. Among other companies . the
Bankers Life Insurance Company, of New
York, has received some mention. This
company is in no way connected with the
Bankers Life Association, of Des Moines,
la., the annual report of which appears
on page two of this issue. We furnish
life Insurance at cost with a low rate of
expense and our new business written in
Oregon last year amounted to 11,316,000.

Dr. Cobcrn Will. Preach. Dr. W. F.
Ooburn, of Boston, who began a series
of exangelistlc services in Taylor-Street
Methodist Church on Thursday night, will
preach In that church this morning -at
10:30 o'clock, on "The Shepherd's Pealm."
and tonight on "The Woman at the Well."
Special music will be rendered by a chorus
choir. During the week there will be
services each night except Saturday. Dr.
Coburn will conduct meetings for Bible
study each afternoon, at 8 o'clock, ex
cepting Monday and Saturday. Much in
terest la being manifested in the series
of special services which was inaugurated
Thursday night
Under Surgeon's i'nife. Robert Ral,
son of Mrs. E. A. Hammand. of this city,
was operated on for appendicitis at The
Dalles Wednesday. At lost accounts he
wba getting along In a satisfactory
manner, although he was in a serious con
dition before the operation. Tbe young
man was with Mr. Hammand, at Celilo.
when the former was taken very ill. Mr.
Hammand started for Portland with the
ick man but on reaching The Dalles was
compelled to stop.
Revival, at Centenary Church. Be
ginning next Sunday, March 8, revival
services will bo held each night in the
wet'k, except Saturday, in Centenary
Methodist Church. These special services
will be held throughout Lent. Ministers
will be Invited to deliver addresses at the
various meetings.
St. David's Dat. Cymru. Cymro,
a'Chyniraeg. On March 2 the Welsh peo
ple, of Portland, will hold an entertain
ment In the I'nited Presbyterian

Death of J. J. Thajosm. John J.
Thanem. who had been connected with
various agricultural implement and ma
chinery firms in this city for years, died
in a San Antonio, T.. hospital Friday.
His body is being brought to Portland
for burial. Mr. Thanem was on his way
to Dallas, ' Tex., where "he 'was hi hopes
the climate would benefit his health. Ha
had suffered for some time with dropsy
and spent some time in the Good Samari
tan Hospital. He became so ill that he
was taken from the train at San Antonio
and placed in a hospital there. The .body
was taken In charge by the Elks Lodge,
of San Antonio, Mr. Thanem having; been
a member of that organization, and a
member of the Portland lodge. He leaves
a sister and a daughter in this city. Tbe
funeral will probably be conducted by the
Elks.
Chamber Leases Quarters. A five
year lease was yesterday signed "by the
Chamber of Commerce oovering the
quarters accupled by it in the Chamber of
Commerce building. At an early meeting
of the board of trustees consideration will
be given to the matter of remodeling and
refurnishing the present quarters. It is
also proposed to begin at once the -work
of enlarging the permanent exhibit. In
order to accomplish this the various
counties of the state will be asked to
contribute products. Special effort will
be made to make the exhibit one of the
most attractive on the Coast, In anticipa
tion of the large number of visitors who
will pass through Portland next year on
their way to the Seattle Fair.
Bots' Camera. Chjb. Plans are being
perfected by I. W. Larimore and W. S.
Holt, In charge of the boys' depart'
ment of the Y. M. C. A., for the forma
tion of a Junior Camera Club, in the near
future, among the younger members of
the Association. It is proposed to give In
structions in all branches of photograpy.
This step was taken as a result of the
many requests that have been received by
Mr. Larimore that such a club be or
ganized among the junior members of the
Association.
Funkiiai, of Mrs. Mart A. Welch.
The funeral of Mrs. Mary A. Welch was
held from the family residence, 81 Bast
Thirty-sixth street yesterday afternoon.
The interment will be at Lebanon. Mrs.
Welch was 78 years old.- She was the
mother of Captain H. U. Welch, Mrs. D.
F. Hardman and Mrs. D. L. Ambler, of
Portland.
Lecture bt Dr. A. A. Lindsay. Dr. A.
A. Lindsay will lecture at tbe Ivanboe
Knights of Pythias hall. Eleventh and
Alder streets, at 8 P. M., next Wednesday,
on the subject: "Rapport or Choosing
Associates." This is the first lecture in
a series upon "Choosing a Calling or
I'roression and lour Associates.

Erect New Church. This afternoon at
3 o'clock the men of St. Andrew's
parish, at Highland, will meet to con
sider the matter of the erection of a new
church for that parish next Spring. The
parish is a new one, but tbe need of a
church is shown in the large attendance
at all meetings.
Forum Meeting Postponed. The meet
ing of the People's Forum, scheduled for
this aftenaoon, has been postponed until
next Sunday, when Father Edwin N.
O'Hara will be the speaker.

DEATH OF NATHAN NICHOLS
Veteran of the Civil War Passes
.Away at Washougal.
Nathan Nichols, whose funeral was
held at Clatskanle, Or., last Tuesday,
was a veteran of the Civil War. having
served three years in the Union Army
as Captain of Company H, Twenty
third Missouri Infantry. He had been
a resident of the Pacific Northwest
since 1877, and was well known at
Coos Bay, Washougal and Clatskanle.
Mr. Nichols was born in Crawfords
rllle. Ind., October 11. 1834. In 185
he was married to Miss Mary Mlkels.
Mrs. Nichols died in 1S76, and the fol
lowing year Mr. Nichols was married
to Miss Martha J. Dixon, the couple
coming to Oregon and settling; at Cooa
Bsy. Later the family lived at Clats
kanle, again moving to Washougal.
Wash., in 1S95, where his death oc
curred. Mr. Nichols leaves a wife, a sister,
Mrs. Emily Mlkels, of Shackelford. Ho.
and the following children: Mrs. J. E.
Van and Mrs. U. D. Kelly, of Clatska
nle; Mrs. U. S. Bryant, Charles Nich
ols and Jessie NiocolR. of Portland:
Harry Nichols and George Nichols, of
Washougal.

CHURCH WILL CELEBRATE
ReT. E. Nelson Allen Completes
Fifth Tear of Pastorate.
Hawthorne Presbyterian Church, East
Twelfth and Taylor streets, will today
celebrate the fifth anniversary of the
pastorate of Kev. E. Nelson Allen. 'Mr.
Allen came direct from the First Cumber
land Presbyterian Church of Kansas City.
Mo., where he had been pastor for eight
years, to the First Cumberland Presbyte-
Rev. E. Nelson Allesu
rian Church of Portland. Since then this
church has become one of the leading
Presbyterian churches in the city in point
of numbers and influence. Mr. Allen took
active part in bringing about organic
union between the mother Presbyterian
and the Cumberland churches, and was
the last moderator of the Oregon Synod of
the Cumberland Church. He also par
ticipated In reform movements. Including
the Anti-Saloon League, of which he is
till a prominent member. Services today
will be appropriate to the fifth anniver
sary. In the evening the following will
be the programme: "The Christian En
deavor," Hiss Florence Williamson;
"Women's Home Missionary Society,"
Mrs. H. L. Chapen; miscellaneous re
marks, R. R. Steele; "Relation of the
Church to Other Organisations and Move
ments." Rev. S. A. 9tarr; "What of the
Future." O. M. Scott. Special music will
be provided.
