PADEREWSKI IS A MAN OF THE WORLD
.
Great Musician Is Not Effeminate Nor a Dreamer, but a Man of Flesh and Blood.
PROBABLY one of the most Inter
ng personages among the musi
cians who wllil visit thia city this
season Is Ignace Paderewskl. A shake
from the strong ritfht hand of Pader
ewskl dissipates all previous notions
of any physical weakness. The fore
most pianist of the age Is not a dream
man. nor Is he a mere pulse. His
grasp would be a fortune to a politi

tinction for a diplomat. Most decidedly
he is of this world. lie is a man of It.

well-ordered citizen, and you realize
that you have lost the musician, but
you have foimd the man. He makes
you feel at home and puts you at ease;
he is a real host, so delightfully dif
ferent from what you have expected.
You anticipated an older man. but then
you must remember he began early in
this rustling, bustling musical world.
He Is interested in music to a great
degree; he wants to know about your
orchestras, your composers, your man

LIVES IN CHARNEL HOUSE
Girl Cooks and Sleeps In Koom
With 1)011 Body.
BERLIN', Feb. 8. (Special.) A gris
ly tragedy has come to light at Lieip
sig. Since November 17 nothing has
been seen of a bookseller named Paul
Giegler. who had a business in the
Gosolienstrasse. A young woman
named Minna Doell, who lived with
him. at first Informed the Inquiring
neighbors and relations that he was
traveling in Italy, but later altered
this version to the indiscreet state
ment that he was in a Vienna hospital.
Investigations In the Austrian capital
failed to reveal any trace of the miss
ing man, and heightened the already
aroused suspicions of those connected
with him.
On Saturday last they decided to
attempt forcible entrance to his dwell
ing. Before, however, thoy had got
the door open tho Doell girl Jumped
from the window and took to her
licels. The place was searched on
Sunday by the police, who found Gieg
ler'a corpse hidden beneath the tidily
arranged covering of a bed. Tiie
body was liv an advanced state of de
composition, and was discolored al
most to blackness, but It still bore un
mistakable signs of violent strangula
tion, it was evident that the girl had
cooked and slept in the same room
with the dead man. She had made oft
with $2500, but has since been arrested at
Halle.
SELL KAISER POSTAL CARDS
Pictures Drawn by German Emperor
Reproduced for Charity.
BERLIN'. Feb. 8. (Special.) Three
picture postcards by the hand of the
Emperor have just been published In
a seri( planned by the late Queen
Carola of Saxony, In aid of the con
sumptive poor. One is a reproduction
of a picture of a sea battle painted in
1805. Then there are two scenic de
signs for the Burggraf of Nuremberg
tower, in romance style, signed "Wil
lielm R. I., architect. 4-7-1893," and a
couple of designs for regatta prizes.
All bear autographic descriptions by
Hi Majesty. Large orders for these
cards are said to have been received
from' England.
Another proof of the Emperor's
many-sided activity will shortly be
laid before the German public in the
form of photographs of CorTe Castle,
taken by His Majesty during his recent
residence in England. They are to be
shown on a screen at a lecture by the
architect, Bodo Ebhardt, on English
and German castles.
great Importance also. Hitherto the club
license liaji been merely a registration
fee a mere nominal sum.
In future, if the licensing proposals
which are now being drafted are carried
into law, the rates to be levied will be
much on the same lines as the present
rates for ordinary public houses That Is,
it will be a sliding scale of charges, ac
cording to the valuation. In most of
the big clubs, the business done In the
drink line is on a par with almost the or
dinary trade, and in many cases in the
purely social clubs, particularly many of
the so-called workingmen's clubs, it far
exceeds the sales In very many of the
public houses. A large amount of revenue
will be tapped In this way.
KING PLEASED WITH ORDER
AVIH Prevent Repetition of "Beres-ford-Scott
Scandal."
LONDON. Feb. 8. (Special.) At the
council which the King held at Bucking
ham Palace on January 28, his Majesty
signified his formal approval of an admir
alty order which will prevent any repe
tition of the foolish, mischievous and very
undignified proceedings at Portland in
connection with the so-called "Beresford
Scott scandal."
The King is said to have been much
annoyed at what then took place, and is
believed to have suggested the order In
council for which the Lords of Admiralty
applied. This order was added to the of
ficial code of King's instructions and ad
miralty regulations.

of 76, from the result of a fall which

the best-known modern art amateurs,

Paris society. His collection of Wat

REFUSES PAY FOR TWINS
Servant's lawyer Raises Fine Point
in French Court.
PARIS, Feb. 8. (Special.) Having
promised hi servant girl $9. a month
when her child was born, a doctor at
Ncuilly refused to pay more when twins
appeared. In the court the girl's lawyer
likened the dactor to tho sportsman who
blinds a gamekeeper In one eye, for
which he has to give the man a pension.
Afterward the gamekeeper, owing to the
Injury spreading, becomes totally blind,
but fnircly, asked the lawyer, the. sports
man does not expect to set off at the
name cost for one eye 'as for two.
Kor the doctor, it was contended that
French law recognized no liability of the
father in such a case. He had agreed
to pay the girl $9 monthly to help her
with the burden a child entailed, but did
not bargain to have to pay for twine.
The accident of birth was no reason why
he should pay twice $9. as contended by
the mother. The judges adjourned their
decision.
