    THE SUNDAY OREGOMAX, PORTLAND, FEBRUARY
STARS TAKE GAME
Beat Columbias One Goal in
Hard Contest.
THE SCORE IS 6 TO 5
Columbia Defense Weakens In Iast
Half, While All-Star Forwards
Hang Ball Through Just
Knough to Win.
All-Stars 6, Columbias
For the first time this season the
Columbia Association football team, ot
the City league, tasted defeat, wiien
yesterday afternoon an All-Star com
bination, taken Jrom the Hornets, th
Crescents and the Alblna Thistles,
nosed out a victory In a beautiful frame
. of soccer. Play was on the whirlwind
order throughout "and it looked like a
hands-down victory for the league
champions until 20 minutes before the
finish. Then their defense seemed to
weaken in spots and the All-Star for
ward line, quick to take advantage of
it. pumped through goal after goal, ii IT
the one necessary to win was banged
into the net by Andrew Matthew
The match was naturally the most
spectacular of the season. The Colum
bia forward line, probably the five
best combining forwards in the city,
were at their best. So much stronger
than usual, however, was the defense
they went up against that five goals
were the limit of their powers. Taking
the game from end to end, they werS
superior to the All-Star forwards; the
latter won the game because their de
fense in the last half 'did superior
work.
The Columbias opened brilliantly.
There was gloomy silence among the
250 spectators while they watched
Burns, Dick and Stevenson get a goal
each, for the Columbias are not favor
ites In local soccer circles. At halt
time the score was 3 to 0, and the All
Star backers concluded theit coin ,was
lost. Then the All-Star forwards com
menced rushing things and excellent
centers from the left wing enabled
Harry Matthewy to score twice. The
Columbias, Dick making a sizzllnsf
shot, turned the score to 4 to 2. Kil
pack scored with a fine cross shot, giv
ing Pattullo no chance. Score, 4 to ?
Vv'ith each All-Star goal, the spec
tators shouted themselves hoarse, gin
gering that aggregation to its best
efforts. Tait then climbed over Mc
Nlcholas. the All-Star goalkeeper. In
juring him slightly and getting a goal
besides. Score, 5 to 3. Then In little
more than as many minutes, Harry
Matthew poked past two more and the
sixth and winning tally was secured
when Andrew Matthew hammered back
a ball that Patullo had Just knocked
out. Score, 5 to 6.
The whole All-Star defense played
well. Rylance and Jago, at fullback,
were particularly clever. John Dick
son, at center half, was back in old
time form, to the delight of his many
friends. The Matthews were the pick
of the forward line.
The Columbia forwards were uni
formly good. Short was strong
throughout at fullback. Young, who
appeared in a Columbia uniform for
the first time this year, was a bulwark
In the- first half.
Mountz, referee, used the rules In
existence before the present London,
Eng., codo was generally adopted, as
a result of which he allowed to go un
penalized many plays that local play
ers nave been used to having called
fouls. This caused some confusion.
Mountz, however, is a good and pop
ular referee.
PLAY BASKETBAXIi OX SKATES
Hill Academy Defeated by West Side
High School.
A large crowd witnessed an exciting
frame of basketball played on roller
skates last night at the Exposition Rink,
between teams representing the Hill Mili
tary Academy and the West Side High
School in which the latter team was
victorious. The score was 10 to 6.
Both teams displayed considerable skill
at the game, and the reckless manner in
which the youngsters covered the floor
on skates was thrilling. This game Is one
of a series that is to be played at the
Exposition Rink. Next week will witness
elmilar games between the Multnomah
Club five and the T. M. C. A. and in all
probability a return game will be played
between the two teams of last night's
contest.
Captain Hincke. Houston and Ben Hill
played well for the cadets, while the stars
for the High School were Davis, Mc
Gulre and Chapman. The teams lined-up
as follows
