GROCERIES
To Give Groceries Free Equal to the Amount of Purchase in Our Main Store
NEWS ITEM
One jobbing wholesale grocery house and it is not located on
Fourth street, either did us a good turn the other, day in the way
of an ad. They took one of our page ads and posted it on the wall
in their store. Above it they posted a sign something like this:
WE DONT SELL. THIS FIRM GROCERIES
That was good mighty good for us (even if it was peanut busi
ness for a supposed big jobbing firm to be doing), as a certain man
saw it and came up and bought a $27.00 bill of groceries of us. Gen
tlemen, I consider it a duty to warn people when I see them in dan
ger therefore, don't monkey with a buzz-saw. J. M. Acheson, if
necessary, is not afraid to start the saw in motion. Within the next
48 hours most all retail grocerymen will know who it is that is going
to deliver them from a galling trade-stifling combination, and where
their deliverers are located. Again I warn jobbing houses to be care
ful attend strictly to .their own business which is neutrality and'
sell goods. J. M. ACHESON.
STATEMENT
NO. 1
Citizens of Portland and State of Oregon: My business in the
capacity of manager of this establishment is to sell goods at a reason
able profit and keep this concern from hitting the rocks of failure.
I am fully aware from past experience that if I need help and succor
I need not expect it from those who are my competitors. Therefore
I can see no reason as to why I should defer in the method of the
conducting of my business to them as they will not pay my bills or
even help. This bein;; so, I deem it my duty to conduct this business
as I think best, so that my merchandise will appeal to the greatest
possible number of my fellow-citizens. I hold no patents on my
methods, other than what few brains I may have, and any one who
wishes may follow my example. Therefore I rely on the people to
sustain my efforts and I'll vote for their choice. . ( J. M. A.

RESULTING BENEFIT
ITEM
I have given about 37 additional people employment by my
determination to do business. I can also give employment to
about 20 first-class tailors on men's suits to order; also one
first-class cutter, several good ladies' tailors, a few A-l sales
ladies and several general help. Do you think I am doing my
part to keep things moving? J. M. ACHESON.
EDITORIAL RESULT ITEM
I will simply say that we are compelled to continue this strictly
business proposition and I have endeavored to illustrate the reasou
for the same. In the past four and one-half days about $26,000 worth
of groceries have been sold and engaged for with us. People seem to
fully appreciate modern business methods and delivery from ironclad
grasp. Groceries to the extent of over $1000 have been sold by us to
Tacoma, Seattle and Spokane. .1 don't wish to be self -praising, but
I want to say that much trade that does not now come to Portland
can be brought here if every one will get in and try for it.
J. M. ACHESON.
