Clatsop County's new courthouse
Is now practically ready for occupancy
and It Is by far the finest county
bulkl In? In . the ' state, if not In the
Northwest. The structure was com
menced three years ago, and when all.
the furniture is Installed will have
cost In the neighborhood of 1200,000.
Tho building, which is located on
what Is known as the Courthouse
square, is 120 feet wide, facing on Com
mercial street, and 96 feet deep, two
Morles high, with a basement. The
foundation Iff what Is known as the
blanket type, being constructed of sev
eral feet of crushed rock overlaid with
concrete reinforced with steel bars.
The basement is built of Tenlno sand
stone, while the upper portion of the
building is of pressed brick with terra
cotta trimmings. The exterior of the
structure is plain but substantial and
presents a solid appearance, there be
ing none of the "gingerbread" work,
which Is . expensive and at the same
time useless. The first floor Is 12 feet
from the ground, with 28 steps lead
ing up to It and the building is 60
feet In height to the base of the glass
and copper dome, which surmounts the
center.
The main entrance is from Commer
cial 'street and the stairway to the sec
ond floor' leads from the corridor di
rectly opposite it. There are also two
other entrances to the bulldinir. one

the other from the west on Seventh
street. The interior of the structure
was designed with a view of providing
ample quarters for the various offices,
n safe' place for keeping the county's
valuable records, and is finished in a
style that combines beauty, with sub
stantiability. In the main corridors
the floors and wainscoting are of mar
ble, as is the wainscoting in the Cir
cuit Court room" and the woodwork
is of quarter-sawed Eastern oak with
golden finish. .
The County Clerk's and Recorder's
office are located in the northeast cor
ner of the first floor adjoining the main
entrance, with the Sheriff's office
directly back of it. Between the two
Is a mammoth vault, 26 by f.2 feet,
built of concrete reinforced with steel.
It Is divided by a steel partition and
can be entered from either the Clerk's
or Sheriff's office. Adjoining the
main entrance on the west is the
County Court room and opening from
! this is located the County Judge's pri
' vate office. Back of these, but sepa
rated by a corridor, are the Treasurer's
and Assessor's offices with a vault be
tween them. Both these vaults extend
to the basement so that the lower por
tion can be used for storing records
and documents, which, while of great
value and must be preserved, are not
in constant use. Each of the officers
is provided with a private office, ad
joining the public rooms. -

lighted by a huge skylight as well as
several large windows and is decorat
ed with tiers of cornices -that .give it
an imposing and handsome-appearance.
The judge's bench and other furniture
is' of quarter -sawed oak, ' while the
wainscoting is of marble. - Directly'
back of the bench and in the north
west corner of the building is the
court's public chambers and adjoining
this is his private office. Opening into
the private corridor, which leads to
the court's office, and arranged along
the front of the building are a wit
ness room, two Jury rooms and the
District Attorney's office. Directly
across the corridor from these is the
School Superintendent's office, while
the southeast corner of the second
floor Is occupied by the Surveyor's
quarters. 5
The counters In the various offices
and the furniture for the entire build
ing are of quarter-sawed Eastern oak,
golden finish, in keeping with interior
woodwork. The vault furniture is
constructed of double-enameled steel,
olive green finish, and the combination
gas and electric light fixtures are of
what is. known as brush brass. The
building is. provided with every mod
ern convenience, is heated .with' steam
and has. all the latest improvements In
the lines of ventilation and plumbing.
It is a. structure of which the county
may well feel proud and one that has
