' 1 ' ' ' ;
THE charm of the outdoor Summer
girl, with all her dainty fluff and
ruffles, has been lauded to the
skies in both verse and prose, but what
of the Indoor Winter girl and her pret
ty housedress? The. poet who would
pay tribute to the girl In dainty pink
or blue, befrilled and lace-trimmed,
need not lay aside his goosequill un
til the, return of Spring- and Summer.
Iet htm glimpse In upon the firesides
of Portland, and see the maid cosily
curled up in the big armchair under
tiie t'tw of tire reading-lamp, or note
the hav,-c wrought by Cupid at little
informal Winter Rdtherlng's where the
rtatritv little houscfrock gets Its chance.
The old idea that heavy materials
and somber colors must make up the
Winter wardrobe, has been sent scur
rying y the modern maid, who finds It
quite possible. In her well-heated home,
to don light, dainty materials, and who
fairly revels In the oft delicate tints
In which these materials are to be had.

the local shops this season. Half a
dozen new materials, in the most

CHURCH IS PROSPERING
Sunnyside Congregational Meeting
Shows Activity In All Lines.
The annual business meeting and roll
call of the Sunnyside Congregational
Church, Rev. J. J. Staub, pastor, was
held n the parlors of the church, Friday
evening. January 10. Despite the stormy
weather a good attendance answered to
the roll call with a quotation from the
Scriptures. The first item of business
was the report from the various branches
of church work, which revealed remark
able activity and most encouraging re
sults. Every department had enjoyed
material growth in membership, and after
meeting every expenditure the treasuries
of all societies showed a handsome bal
ance at the opening of the new year.
Promptness in the discharge of financial
obligations is considered a cardinal virtue
in this church. The total receipts for
the year were about $3500. A liberal In
crease in the pastor's salary gave con
crete evidence of the appreciation in
which he is held by his people. This is
the 16th year of his pastorate in the
Sunnyside Church. Never were the pros
pects for progress and usefulness better
than at present.
After the election of officers the mem
bershlp adjourned to the lecture-room,
where a bountiful repast was served by
the Ladies' Aid Society. Here enthusiasm
reached high-water mark and found
happy expression in responses to the fol
lowing toasts:
"Our Incomparable Ladies' Aid," S. C.
Pier: respond. Mrs. J. A- Pettlt: "First Im
pressions." Frank W. Wtt; "The Future
of Our T. P. 8. C. E.." Charles T. Privatt:
response. Miss Edna Fulmer; "The Future
of the Church." Dr. J. A. Pettlt: "The Men
of Our Church," J. T. TVilson; "Knotty
Problem Solved," Dr. A. M. Webster; "The
Harmony of and in the Choir," H. V. Mills;
"The Master Magnet of Soclaliblllty," B. O.
Woods.
The most inspiring annual meeting
came to a close in the singing of "Blest
Be the Tie."

the ensuing year: Church clerk. S. C. Pier;
chruch tre&surer. tj. F. Ftes:- trustees, W. E.

Good Results or Parole System.
CHICAGO, Jan. 11. Municipal Judge
Mackenzie Cleland's efforts to redeem the
fallen, through his parole system, came
to an end last night, when the last ses
sion of the Maxwell branch of the .court,
prior to his transfer to the civil branch
of the tribunal, was held.
Many who never before entered a police
court were present. Also there .were
wives, whose homes, they said, had been
redeemed from . the curse of drunken
husbands and fathers, through Judge. Cle
land's plan of reformation. Some were
present who said their own reformation
was due to the system Inaugurated by
Judge Cleland. Of the defendants last

. Yamagata Opposes Economy.
TOKIO, Jan. 11. Isaburo Tamagata,
Minister of Communications has, it ;a
understood, tendered his resignation to
the Premier Marquis Saionjl, as a pro
test against the reduction in the appro
priation for railroad improvements. It
is doubtful however. If this resignation
will be accepted, and a compromise will
probably be reached. Minister Yamagata
is the adopted son of Field Marshal Yam
agata. Lynchers Hunt Murderer.
BOUGERE SWAMP, La.. Jan. 11.
Bands of angry workmen are search
ing this neighborhood for a man who
on Thursday shot and killed Mrs.
Harris, wife of a railroad contractor.
The shot was fired by a man In am

intended for Mr. Harris, passing
through his hat before striking his
wife. The slayer probably will be
lynched if captured.
