Tribute of Friend to
James D. Frainey

rum Mortus Est. In the passing of
James D. Frainey the career of no or
dinary individual Is closed. Born in
tho west of Ireland under a flag- and
sky that 60 years ago offered little edu
cational facilities; imbittered against
the British Government for the wrongs,
real or imaginary, inflicted upon him
self and his ancestors for generations
past, Mr. Frainey, like millions of his
fellow countrymen, sought surcease
from norrow in the wilds of America.
Possessed of a splendid physique and
endowed with more than ordinary na
tive Intelligence, he early became a
conspicuous character on the Pacific
Coast. Whether tolling In the border
mines of Idaho or shoveling gravel
Into the sluice boxes of Auburn in the
early '60s: whether delving in the
trenches of Portland, or for 28 hours
Fitting on a Jury In the state court,
Intandlng alone against 11 obstinate
other Jurors In defense of a negro
charged with stealing a pair of panta
loons, as the writer has seen the de
ceased, James Frainey was a character
to be considered and a man to be reck
oned with.
In politics a Republican by training,
and in religion a Catholic by birth, Mr.
Frainey was above and beyond his po
litical and religious creeds. Oems are
found In rough exteriors, and. In the
words of a contemporary, who for 40
years had been his friend and had been
by him befriended: "Jim Frainey was In
a class by himself."
No esttmate of the deceased could
he correct or complete without point
ing out the peerless courage, physical
and moral, ever manifest in his virile
makeup. Many of his countrymen pos
sessed' some of the euTtmable qualities
with which he was endowed, but none
approached him In manly courage, dar
ing audacity and, withal, in Judicious
conservatism In the heat of a trying
ordeal. The predominating character
istic of James Frainey was his un
bounded charity and his ever-ready
forgiveness, even unto his. enemies,
vanquished or victors.
Six thousand miles from the land of
his birth, a land to which he ever
turned with filial affection and undying
patriotism, today he returns to mother
earth in the bosom of Oregon, mourned
and admired by a field of acquaint
ances that extends from the sands of
8an Diego to the barriers of British
Columbia, a lino which the deceased
never desired to cross.
James Frainey was a typical Celt; he
had no Scotch-Irish In his veins, and
he proclaimed no boast of ancestry;
no coat of arms ever Immortalized the
Frainey gens; he was what he was
because he was what he was, and could
not be otherwise; simply a lineal de
scendant of generations and genera
tions of autochthons, who multiplied,
lived, died and were burled In the same
parish of the same county of the same
province of the same Island.
If from poverty to have acquired af
fluence by the sole energy and the
honest toll of a laborious life Is praise
worthy; If to have reared a family
whose every care, want and educational
training was guarded and provided for
by a devoted father and- a respectful
husband Is commendable; If for 40
years, in adversity and prosperity, to
have commanded not only the respect
but the admiration of his co-laborers
and his employes Is creditable, then the
llfo of James Frainey was a success,
Hnd the world Is better because he
lived.
Well might his epitaph read: "Write
me as one who loved his fellow man.
I have done."
