Catholics Plan New Schools and
Clubs for AA'hich Sites Have
Been Secured Buy 200
Acres at Oswego.
Fall building on the East Side prom
ises to be heavy and several important
contracts are about to be let. On
Union avenue and East Oak street a
two-story brlrk annex is to be built
to cost $10,000. H. J. Hefty is pre
paring plans for this building which
Is 50x20. The ground floor will bo
occupied by stores and the upper por
tion will be connected with the main
building.
S. Aligrani has started work on a
two-story brick on the south side of
Hawthorne avenue, between East Sec
ond and East Third, to cost $15,000.
Work on the concrete foundation is
well along toward completion. Mr.
Aligrani would have erected a frame
building, had not 'the property been
within the fire limits. At East Market
and East First streets the Columbia
Milling Company has completed its
plant at a cost of 150.000. It is a
modern plant for grinding cereals.
Architect J. O. Wrenn has prepared
plans for a dwelling for himself at
East Eleventh and Tillamook streets
to cost 14500. Excavation for the foun
dation has been started. It will be an
g-room building.
H. L. Camp & Company has the con
tract for the erection of a residence
and garage for John Poulsen, to cost
$7000 and $400 respectively. The
house will be built on East Tenth and
Multnomah streets, and the garage will
occupy one end of the lot. It will be
one of the most attractive houses on
the East Side.
The Catholics have under way and in
contemplation buildlngs'in many places
on the East Side.- A school and chapel
will be erected on the grounds of the
Redeniptorlst Fathers to cost $10,000.
rians have been prepared for this
structure and the contract will be let
so that work can start on the founda
tion next month. This building is the
first of a group to be erected on the
12-aere tract secured. At University
Park a school for girls will be erected
near the Holy Cross Church to cost
$700n. It will be built this Fall.
Work Is going forward on the new
Polish Roman Catholic Church on
Maryland avenue and Failing street.
92x44. to cost $12,000. It will be com
pleted and occupied aoout the mid
dle of next month. Immediately after
the completion of this edifice work will
start on a schoothouse to provide Cath
olic education for the children of the
Polish citizens. Work has been started
on the foundation of the annex to the
Holy Names Academy on East Oak
and" East Twelfth streets. This build
ing will cost $7000. It will be com
pleted about the first of the year.
The concrete foundation for the club
house of the Catholic Young Men's
Club in the Alblna parish is -completed,
but the bids for the building were in
excess of the funds of the club and it
was decided to call for new bids.
The most important acquisition by
the Catholic diocese during the week
was the purchase of 200 acres of land
at Oswego from P. H. Jarisch and A.
vTalling for $34,000. The deed for this
land was placed on file at Oregon City
"Wednesday. It is announced that the
land was purchased for the purpose
of establishing a large educational in
stitution to be under the control of
the Sisters of the Holy Names. The
land Is accessible both by the Wil
lamette River and by rail. It is on an
elevation and Is considered ideal for
the purpose for -which It was pur
chased. The Catholics also have se
cured a tract of 70 acres on the East
Side, near Oak Grove.
Plans have been prepared for a res
idence for S. I. Gulss on East Seven
teenth and East Alder streets to cost
$3500.
Hart's Beard Sacrificed
to Fire Fiend
St. John Photographer Usea Giwo
llne to Clean Gallery Floor by
Light of Candle Home Almost
Deatroyed Same Nlarht.
f A. HART, the new photographer of
mr St. Johns, is minus a considerable
portion of his beard, the result of a fire
In his gallery in the Holhrook block, Fri
day night, that came very nearly being
mure serious and destroying the block.
Mr. Hart had Just taken charge of the
gallery and decided that the floor needed
cleaning. He got out some gasoline and
MHrted to work. The electric lights had
not yet been turned on.' and he was using
n candle temporarily while at work. In
mme way the bucket of gasoline ignited
from the candle and a flame reaching
nearly to the ceiling of the room poured
forth from the bucket. For a time it
looked as though a serious fire would re
sult. All efforts to extinguish the flames
were futile until Mr. Hart put a lid on top
of the bucket. That stopped the fire
there, and then by means of some rugs
the fire on the oil on the floor was smoth-.
ered out. Mr. Hart was burned slightly
about his face and his beard was partly
singed off.
After Mr. Hart had gone to his home
from the gallery he found that the house
had a narrow escape from fire. Mrs.
Hart had retired, leaving the lamp burn
ing on a table near the bed. Before fall
ing asleep she noticed that the light was
"slowly fading out. She saw with alarm
that the light had gone down into the
lamp Itself. Hastily Jumping up. she
picked the lamp up and succeeded in
throwing It Into the yard a short distance
from the house, where It exploded, scat
tering the oil and setting fire to the
grass, which she succeeded in extinguish
ing with considerable effort.
PROGRESS OF LEMCKE SUIT
Plaintiffs Give Notice of More
Legal Trouble for Promoters.
In ' th continuation of the suit yes
terday to have a receiver appointed
for the H. TV. Lemeke Company, a real
estate firm, the prosecution gave notice
that more legal trouble is ahead for
the promoters. For the defense AUor
ny Dan G. Malarkey stated that the
plaintiffs knew what they were buying
when they bought Into the firm, and
thai any fraud committed since Viry
became members of the firm must
have been with their, knowledge and
consent, as they were officers of the
concern. He intimated that the tangle
came about because Burkhardt. one ofl
the complainants, wanted to "run
things hla own way."
Wallace MoCamant. arguing in favor
of the appointment of a receiver on
the application of v. A. Curry and F.
Otto Burkhardt, said:
"If Tom Lawson had ever heard of
the wny in which H. Y. Lfmcke han
dled the lease of the offices of the
company and secured a credit of mon
than $6000 by having the company pay
its rent four years and a holf in ad
vance, he never would ltnve paid any
attention to Standard Oil. He would

SEVEN HOMES IN
ROSE CITY PARK
Two are now occupied; one will be ready
to live in this week; two will be ready in
two weeks and the other two will be com
pleted the first of September. Still another
home will be built this 'Fall, and probably
six besides that. There are scores of people
who are planning to build, and whose work
is in the hands of architects and contrac
tors. It is perfectly safe to assume that
there will be at least thirty new homes in
Rose City Park by the middle of next Sum
mer. Unless you have been out to Rose
City Park lately, you have no idea what
a wonderful difference a few houses makes.
It adds to the natural beauty of the place
and seems to almost compel one to fall in
line and build where there is every city con
venience the freedom of Nature, excellent
transportation facilities and environment
that is unsurpassed on the North Pacific
Coast. There are still several very desir
able locations at $450, on easy terms, while
the finest possible locations for homesites
can be had at prices a little in advance of
that figure.
