Drills by the crew at the United States Life Saving station, near Ocean Park are always attended by a large number of beach visitors. Teams take parties to Fort Canby and the North Head lighthouse. Other amuse ments are skating, dancing and social events. The swimming pool Is well pa tronized, and It is no unsual sight to see little girls and boys who can swim like ducks. The Summer crowd Is constantly increasing. The cottages are nearly all filled, and the boarding houses and hotels have no cause to complain of lack of pa tronage. Accommodations, however, are ample. The weather remains cool and pleasant. Sea food is plentiful. The steamer Potter and train service is regu lar and there Is no cause for complaint. AT GEARHART PARK Popular Resort Offers Many Amuse ments to Rest-Seekers. GEARHART PARK. July 20. (Spe cial.) The Summer season at Gearhart in the Kruse Hotel and in the cottages has been one of recreation and pleas ure and events to come bid fair for much in the amusement line. Profes sor James Nicol, of the Portland Riding Academy, has brought down a stable of horses, and paper chases will be given, beginning August 1. The Gearhart Hotel is situated on the ocean front on the edge . of a most charming grove of immense spruce, cedar and hemlock trees that can be seen, in any part of the globe. Two beautiful mountain streams wind through the groves and boating is a favorite pastime with men, women and children. Tame deer are found in an adjoining park. The weather has been delightful of late and the hotel con tains all modern conveniences, electric lights, baths, steam heat and up-to-date plumbing and mountain water. Many new cottages have been built on the ridge overlooking the ocean. A more RTS' picturesque place than Gearhart Park would be hard to find. Nature Is at its best In Its primitive state. Dances are a regular attraction, also musical con certs, and bowling, surf bathing, clam digging, horse-back riding, and various trips to adjoining points comprise other interesting incidents of Seaside life. Cottages are well taken care of. Mr. F. Dresser conducts a first-class gro cery at Gearhart and there is also a butcher shop and refreshment stands. A new road has been laid out from the railroad station to the hotel, whlth is brilliantly illuminated at night with a myriad of electric lights. The sewerage system Is perfect. Im provements are progressing rapidly and property Is selling fast and many new cottages were erected last Spring. A bridge will be erected across the mouth of the Necanicum River soon, so as to provide a direct beach route to Seaside. Theodore Kruse is building a new hotel on the ocean front, which will have cost when completed and fur nished, $75,000. The first story is al ready up. Kruse's Beach Hotel. The de parture of the druggists, physicians, militia boys and those who attended the reception given to Vice-President Fair banks has not caused a noticeable de crease in the throng of visitors. People from all parts of the world come and go, and the hotels and boarding-houses keep well filled. Many Eastern travelers and pleasure-seekers arrive dally on the Sea side train from Portland. The hotel 11 show people registered from various East ern 'cities, the Middle States and Europe They all enjoy the beautiful Columbia River ride and are generous In praises of the wild and rugged Clatsop bea? scenery. Nature has shown Its best colors during the week, some clouds and some sunshine. Surf bathing is agreeable, and those who prefer a milder tonic Indulge in the luxury of the hot salt water tub bath. Dancing parties are given nightly and the skating rink is patronized by young and old. Trips to Cannon Beach are still popular, and people never tire talking of its grandeur.
