Portuand Men Bid Lowest. Bids for
making alterattona in the Postoffice
were opened Friday by postmaster
Mlnto. Tile lowest tender was found
to be that of Langford & Walker, of this
city. Tho plans and specifications fur
nished by the Treasury Department
railed for an estimated expenditure of
$5000. and provided for utilizing all the
ppace possible in enlarging the work-"
ing departments of the office. One
change is to throw the postmaster's re
reption room into the stamp-selling
section and the present assistant
postmaster's room into the newspaper
and parcel distributing room. The
assistant postmaster will have his of
fice in part of 1 the space now occu
pied by the postmaster. Other changes
will take up considerable vacant space
on the ground floor, where all the con
templated alterations in the building
are to he made. Mr. Minto forwarded
to tho Treasury Department yesterday
the bid of Langford & Walker for ap
proval and acceptance by the depart
ment, upon which the work will be
undertaken at once.
Xbw Bjunk Opens September 1.
Portland's new National bank, the Na
tional Bank of Commerce, will open
its doors for business September 1,
acoording to President W. H. Moore,
of the Oregon Trust St Savings Com
pany, who will also be president of
the new institution. The new bank
will have a paid-up capital of $250,000.
and will occupy the same building as
the Oregon Trust & Savings Bank at
the corner of Sixth and Washington,
until the growth of the institution, de
mands larger quarters. A safety de
posit vault is being put in the corner
room on the ground floor of the new
Board of Trade building, which will
probably be used by either the new
bank or the Oregon Trust as soon as
the building is completed.

Death op Vernon Phelps Tucker.
Vernon Phelps Tucker, son of Halle V.
and Blanche Tucker, was crushed to
death by an engine in British Colum
bia last Saturday, June 29, and died
Sunday, June 30, at St. Paul's Hos
pital, Vancouver, B. C. He was buried
July 3 in Tacoma.

Will Make Maxt Improvements. At
the meeting of the Waverly-Richmond
Improvement Club, at the home of Judge
A. L. Frazer at 970 Ellsworth street, Fri
day night, a special committee was ap
pointed to wait on the Executive Board
to expedite street Improvements under
way and others yet to be started.
Through the work of the club 14 streets
are to be improved. Resolutions for most
of these streets have been adopted by
tho Council. The improvement of Clinton
street from East Twelfth to East For
tieth Is the most important. It will be
of hard surface pavement most of the
distance. Gas mains and double tracks
are to be put down before the Improve
ment Is begun. The club has been as
sured that the neighborhood will be pro
vided with fire apparatus for a volunteer
company yet to be formed. Fire hy
dants, water mains and electric lights
also have been promised the club. Pres
ident Joy reported that the special com
mittee from the Board of Education
would visit that section the coming week
and decide on the location for a school
house. The club is an aggressive, active
organization, and has already started
many improvements In that district.
District No. 12 Annexed. The an
nexation of school district No. 12 at Lents
to Portland district- No. 1 has been ac
complished in conformity with the vote
of last month. Mrs. M. M. Eaton, clerk
of Lents district, last Wednesday turned
over to the clerk of the Portland dis
trict the property and cash on hand, thus
closing the transaction. Mrs. Eaton
turned over a little more than $1800. Out
side of $6000 of bonds there are no debts.
There will be 30 students from this dis
trict to enter the Portland High School
the coming Fall. Last year the school
house was overcrowded, and more room
will have to be provided. In the district
there are more than 600 pupils of school
age. Probably two rooms will be pro
vided at about Woodmere next year.
Death op Mrs. McCormick. A dis
patch received yesterday from Los
Angeles brings news of the death in
that city of Mrs. Helen M. McCormick,
who was for many years a resident of
the East Side. Mrs. McCormick accom
panied her son, H. S. McCormick, to
Los Angeles three years ago. Though
deeply attached to Portland and to her
friends of a third of a lifetime, she
weut willingly where duty called her
She was a woman of kind, unselfish
nature and left behind her the record
of an upright life reaching nearly four
score years. She died July 5 at the age
of 78 years 8 months and 5 days. Her
son, H. S. McCormick, survives her.
Her husband died many years ago in
this city.
Spikes Down Sunday Lid. That the
Sunday lid is on, spiked down and
clenched was made certain yesterday
morning by the decision of Judge Camer
on in the Sam Waffler case. Last Sun
day Sam Waffler, who Is the proprietor
of the Uncle Sam Hotel, served drinks
to some friends in the living room over
the saloon. In his decision the court
places stress upon the fact that there
was evidence of guilt because of the at
tempt to hide the liquor when the officers
entered. The decision is important, for
a contrary decision would have practical
ly destroyed the effect of the Sunday
closing law. The defendant was fined
$15. The case will be carried to the Cir
cuit Court.
Lloyd Sisters Are' in Portland. To
Eastern people the Lloyd sisters need no
introduction. They-are commonly called
throughout the United States the Lloyd
Sisters. They got the name because they
cater to women only, but instead of being
sisters they are two gentlemen represent
atives of the Loom End manufacturers.
They come to Portland to connect them
selves with the Golden Eagle depart
ment store, the fastest growing store on
the Pacific Coast. Mr. Lowit grasped
the opportunity of securing the services
of these two gentlemen. for the period of
one week. Their doings with Loom Ends
starts Tuesday morning at the Golden
Eagle.
East Side Weddings. August Martin
and Elaine Forrester, both of Portland,
were married at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. W. C. Ward, 268 Beech stpnet, July
3, Rev. William H. Henpe. D. D.. officiat
ing. The bride was formerly one of the
East Side telephone girls, and the groom
was In the lumber business. They will
make their home in California. Tilly O.
Puckett and Eva L. Qrammar, both of
Portland, were married July 4, at the
Centenary Methodist parsonage, 508 East
Oak street, by Rev. William H. Heppe.
The groom is employed as a conductor
by the Portland Railway, Light & Power
Company.
The New School. Books. The J. K.
Gill Co., of this city, have been appointed
the general depository for distribution of
textbooks adopted for use in Oregon the
ensuing six years. They will carry a
complete assortment of the regular state
series and of all supplementary books
that may be adopted by boards of di
rectors in special districts. Circulars giv
ing full information as to exchange and
retail prices will be ready in a few days.

Investigate Theft of Purse. The
Travelers' Aid department of the Y. W.
C. A. Is having investigated the tfleft of
a purse, containing $30 and a railroad
ticket, from Mrs. Minnie Seedorf, July 1,
at the Union Depot. Mrs. Lola G. Bald
win, of the Travelers' Aid, said yester
day that the stolen purse had been found
in a room In the Flledner building and
that it still contained the ticket, but the
money was missing. It is her opinion
that the theft -was committed by a
woman.
Church Dedication. The Church of
the Nazarene has purchased a lot on Ta
coma and East Fifteenth streets. Sell
wood, and moved the old Methodist
Church building to the lot. The building
has been fitted out with new pews. Ded
ication services will be held this after
noon at 3 o'clock. Rev. J. H. and Etta
Mclntyre have charge of this work.
Mr. Geo. E. Kramer, of the tailoring
firm of W. P. Kramer & Co., left last
Wednesday for the East. Mr. Kramer
expects to be gone about three weeks,
and will put in most of his time In call
ing on Eastern houses and picking up
new ideas for the coming Fall season.
Millhand Loses Leg. Carl Carlson,
employed in the Eastern & Western Mills,
was struck by a heavy stick of timber
while at work late yesterday afternoon
and as a result of the accident his right
leg was amputated at the Good Samari
tan Hospital.
Not Estes' Machine. The automobile
which ran down Abraham Kutner and
his wife Friday night on the Linnton
road does not belong to Harry Estes. The
machine is owned by E. L. Smith, who
was in charge at the time of the acci

Allen-Fisher Marriage. A very pret
ty home wedding took place last Wednes
day at 12 o'clock noon at the residence of
the bride when Mrs. Phebe Elizabeth
Fisher was united in marriage to Edgar
Allen. The ceremony was performed by
the Rev. Dr. Ford of the Methodist Epis
copal Church in the presence of a circle
of immediate friends. The bride was
handsomely attired in a real lace gown
over white silk and carried a shower
bouquet of orange blossoms and smilax.
After the ceremony the guests repaired to
the elegant dining-room where a wedding
luncheon had been spread, under the ar
tistic supervision of Miss Jean Milne and
Miss Sadie Wells. The newly wedded
couple left on the afternoon train for an
extended tour of the Sound cities. Brit
ish Columbia and the East. After they
return the remaindor of the Summer will
be spent at Mr. Allen's Rustic Cottage,
Seaview, Wash.

Tongues of Fire Again. By order of
Judge Frazer of the Juvenile Court, an
11-year-old girl has been taken from the
home of her parents, who are members
of the Tongues of Fire Church, and
given a home where she will not be ex
posed to the nervous excitement of that
form of so-called religious worship. , This
disposition of the young girl was made
Friday ' afternoon after the officers of
the Juvenile Court had held a conference
of four hours with a delegation of about
60 members of the Tongues of Fire de
nomination,' who maintained that the
courts have no right to interfere in any
way with their religious worship. Judge
Frazer held otherwise. Officers of the
Juvenile Court have this band of relig
ious fanatics under surveillance and will
not permit children of tender age to at
tend the meetings.
Dr. Rrouoher Advertises Portland.
Rev. J. Whitcomb Brougher will occupy
the White Temple pulpit at both the
morning and evening services today, hav
ing returned last night from the Baptist
Young -People's Union Convention at Spo
kane. His subject in the morning will
be "The Ancient Order of S. O. G." and
in the evening "A Jealous Old Maid."
Dr. Brougher spoke at the convention last
Thursday night, telling those assembled
of the offer of $5000 by the Portland Com
mercial Club for the best article written
on Portland and vicinity. As a result
many of the delegates from the East
will return home by way of Portland.
Women's Club Picnic The annual pic
nic of the Portland Women's Club was
held yesterday at Oswego, Mrs. Sarah A.
Evans being hostess. The spot selected
was the one where the club has met In
previous years, by the side of a bubbling
spring in the shade of the pines and firs.
About 100 were in attendance, speech
making and story-telling being the order
of the day. Mrs. Abigail Scott Duniway
was among the speakers. The trip was
made on the steamer Altona.
