Several Patriots Outline Their Mu
nicipal Platform and Declare
Themselves on Various Issues.
The Sellwood Republican Club listened
to Words of wisdom from a number of
candidates for various offioea at a well
attended meeting last night. H. Hume
was chairman of the evening.
Louis Zimmerman, candidate for Mayor,
outlined his platform in a brief talk, de
claring that he was In favor of the erec
tion of a new bridge at Madison street.
He said he favored the improvement of
city streets in preference to the building
of boulevards and driveways around the
city. He declared himself as opposed to
gambling in all ita devious forme, includ
ing slot-machines; he hoped to have the
saloon business regulated in better man
ner than at present and wanted all saloon
men held responsible for the peaceful op
eration of their places of business. He
said he approved of Sunday closing of all
places where liquor Is sold.
Mr. Zimmerman said there should be a
restricted district in the city for the prop
er control of the social evil. He reviewed
his career in the City Council and made
the usual declaration, common to all can
didates, that he favored enforcement of
law and good government.
Judge Cameron made a strong impres
sion although he spoke very briefly about
his record as police magistrate. He prom
ised a clean administration in case he
-were elected. '
O. P. Miller, candidate for auditor, dis
cussed debt limit and economy, and fa
vored a new Madison-street bridge, as
well as another pipe line to Bull Run. A.
L. Barbur, another auditorial candidate
said he represented the business interests
of the city and would give a business ad
ministration. W. R. AlcGarry gave a clean cut and
concise review of the needs of the city,
dwelling somewhat at length upon Its
growth, and declared that if he were
elected City Attorney, the office he is
seeking, he would see to it that all city
officials were properly and faithfully ad
vised as to all legal matters pertaining to
the safest administration of municipal af
fairs. McGarry said he stood for a clean
campaign, that he didn't want any office
if he had to get it by abusing a. rival can
didate. Several other candidates were introduced
and spoke briefly.
