Br MU1.B Macrae.
ff HLN the majestic voice of Madame
W Schumann-Heink .rolled through
the Armory last nlarht and filled everv
nook and corner of that Immense
structure, the bis: audience which had
xalrly fought lta way' into the drlll-
room to hear lier was swept Off JtS
feet with enthusiasm over her won
derful powers. The ovation extended
the srreat contralto even exceeded that
ot last Monday nlgju at the Heilig, and
although'Portland lia had the extra
ordinary privilege of hearing her twice
in the week, it could not be satisfied.
Again and again she was recalled to
repeat Jier triumphs, and as usual she
was all happiness. all eaejerness to
please the grreat mass which was
gratifying; her lieart by its apprecia
tion of her art. v
There Is more to Madame Sohumann
Hink than her extraordinary voice.
There haye been great voices of won-
drous range and duality before, but
never has there been another Schumann-Heink.
The arods have been
rood to her and If ever woman made
generous use of her natural ciftn.it is
she. The magnetism of her personality
has never been equaled in- any other
prima donna, none has ever possessed
such a wealth of vitality, of subtle
humor, of erenerosltjv And surely none
other is loved as she is. Her tour
across the continent has been a con-
tlnuous round of triumphs and her
voice has blazed a path of vocal
glory.
It waa. perhaps, when the English
number on the programme was an
nounced that the enthusiasm of the
audience rose to Its erreatest pitch last
nleht. The Mendelisohn-Bartholdy re
citative and aria from St. Paul suited
the dignity and richness of her voice
to perfection and the audience - was
more enthusiastic - over it. than any
other number, unless it was the Bach-
Gounod' .'Ave Maria" syng to the ac
companiment of pipe organ, violin and
pin no. TJhe beautiful prelude, was a .
musical arem as played by Mr. Cour-
en, Mr, Bayley, and Miss Scliaul, but
when the glorious tones of the great
StOiumann-Hoink voice rose above the
instruments' the result was indescrib
ably effective. The honors of the
thunderous applause wer grraelouBly
shared by . Madame with her ac
companists. Mr. Courscn has accom
panied many of the great artists
who have visited Portland and Mr.
Bay ley, violinist, who is a newcomer
here. has had the same, experience
during the years he played in grand
opera. ; The delicate interpretative art
of Miss Sohaul, the young Gorman
pianiste who accompanies the con -
tralto. Is much appreciated by all
audiences.
The full programme of last nljarht's
concert will be found In the musical
columns of The Oregonlan .today. It
was one which appealed especially to
musicians and to Germans, and -there
were many of the lttr in the im
mense audience who fairly reveled in
Frauenllebc Und'1 Leber. (Schumann)
and Schubert numbers, as well as In
the two Strauss selections. "He tn tra
nche Aultorderung" of the latter, was
one of the most beautifully rendered
numbers of the evening.
The management labored under the
J i rTc u 1 ty of not being able to heat the
Armory well. Tills la almost Impos
sible to do In mild weather, and the
drop in temperature last nisht made
the situation' a. difficult one to cope
with. The singer evidently Buffered
more than the audience and she hur-
rle her programme on this account.
She alncrly regretted that she was
unable to give the encores asked' for
and stated after the concert that she
surely would have done so had the
room been warmer and the risk of
taking: cold less.
Again tlie great need ot a concert
hall In Portland Is brought to public
notice, and practically everyone tn the
audience was asking the question last
night, "Why fiocgn't Bomeone build
one?"
Madame said good-bye to her many
Portland friends for wo years. "I
come again In two years," sue said,
"but sooner, no, 1 go to Paris. Berlin
to the plsces -where T have been arlven
these."' and she Indicated the seven
gold medals which adorned tier cor-
sagr. They were decorations from
kings and queens, from princes and
Grand "Du tees. who have taken that
means of expressing; their appreciation
of the world's greatest contralto voice.
