GETS HISTORICAL RELICS According to a conservative estimate made by County Assessor Slgler the 1907 tax levy In the city limits of Port land will be 15.5 mills. The tax levy fur 1906 was 14.8. The levy for next year will bp on an assessed valuation of $160,000,000, while the 1906 tax levy was made on a . valuation of $130. 000.000. This estimate is made by Assessor Slgrler after a careful investigation. He does not believe that the levy will or should run over 15.5 mills and hopes :hat it can be kept down to 15. The probable increase of the tax levy, in face of a higher valuation, is due to ihe Increased demand of the state, which asks from the county of Multno mah about $352,117 in taxes. For 1906 the state tax was 1.4 mills, but for 1907 it promises to be about 2 mills. This is due largely to the fact that In 1906 no levy was made for ap propriations to the amount of over 371,000 held up by the referendum on the omnibus appropriation bill. The Items of these appropriations must be Included in the levy for 1907. The' levy of 1916 was abnormally low and the levy for 1907 will be abnormally 'high. The city tax for 1906 was 6.2 mills, while for 1907 Assessor Sigler thinks 1t will be but 5 mills, owing to the increased valuation. The county' tax for 1K06. Including the road tax, was but 2.7 mills, while it is believed that the levy soon to be made will be about 3.275 mills. A new county hospital is planned and a great deal of macadam road is to be made. The state school tax for 1906 was 2.1 mills, while t'no new levy Is expected to be about 1.8 mills. The levy of the Port of Portland for 3 906 was eight-tenths of a mill, which Is the same as the levy for the new year decided upon at the meeting held this week. The members of the School Board estimate that their lovy will be about 2.5 mills, which was the figure for 1906. ' The County Court has de rided to fix the tax levy for the sup port of the public library at onc-pighth of a mill. For 1906 it was one-tenth of a mill. "We liope to keep the tax levy for 1907 within 15 mills, but I hardly see how we can do it," said Assessor Sig ler yesterday afternoon. "After a care ful and conservative estimate I figure It at 15.5 mills. The state will prob ably ask for six-tenths of a mill more than In 1906. and that is where the in crease comes In. "I think the city .should be kept down to 5 mills. For 1906 it was 6.2 mills. Owing to the increased valua tion if my estimate holds good the city will raise about $120,000 more in taxes In 1937 than In 1906. This will give $10,000 a month more for municipal running expenses." Historical Society Receives Interest ing Material From Jamestown. By the courtesy of Hon. Jefferson Myers, president of the Oregon-Jamestown Exposition Commission, the Ore gon Historical Society has been placed in possession of three highly interest ing relics, one of which relates to the earliest period of American history. The most important is a brick which was taken from the inside of the tower of the old church, the only remaining remnant of any of the buildings con structed by the first white settlers of America at Jamestown Island, Va., m 1607. This brick was removed from Its bed and given to President Myers in the presence of 15r. Lyon G. Tyler, president of Williams and Mary Col lege, of Virginia, AVIIIIam Leal, post master of Jamestown. C. F. Stansbury, correspondent of the New York World, and F. S. Johnson. This ancient brick Is somewhat larger than the kind in common use today, it measuring 4x9x 2 inches, and its weight being five pounds. It was hard burnt and is as sound as it was when first placed in the old church-tower almost 300 years ao. The second relic Is a piece of stone from the Cornwallis Cave near York town, which was visited by President Myers. The history of this cave, as gathered from thoBe familiar with the i local history of Yorktown, is that it was constructed by Lord Cornwallis during the campaign which ended so disastrously to him on October 19, 1781, as a place of refuge from bonjbard ment. The third relic is an exceedingly well-executed photograph by the Jamestown Official Photograph Corpo ration of the old tower, which shows that the structure is still 150 courses of brick high, which would mean a little more than S5 feet. , the Holiday, CWnr 3TV " - r V V " 7 l ii :&e: 1 ' AT XMAS GIFTS.
