Powell, rector of the Episcopal Church of Colusa, Cnl., arrived in this city last Thursday with a view of looking over the country and perhaps choosing a field for future work. He left Portland yes terday morning for Corvallis and will hold sen-ices there today. Tomorrow, accompanied by Bishop Scad ding, he will make a thorough, visitation of the Cor vallis parish in order to determine what his future relations to it will be. Owing to the fact that the State Agricultural College is situated at Corvallis it is in many respects one of the most important fields in this state. While in the city Mr. Powell was the guest of Mrs. C. C. Hickok, a former parishioner and com municant in Colusa. Coia'sa Man Settljss is Portland. Clarence C. Hickok. for many 'years a prominent business man in Colusa, Cal.. arrived here last Thursday evening with the intention of remaining permanently. He came to Portland in June last for the first time and became so impressed with the prospects of Portland for the future that he sent his wife and children here the following month and they have been residing here ever since, having bought a good home on East Madison street near East Fifteenth. C, who lias been visiting at Columbia University, leaves for Notre Dame. Ind., this com ing week. He is enthusiastic over the prospect for the future of Columbia. For the last 12 years he was president of Notre Dame University and built up the largest boarding school for young men in the world. Dr. Morrlssey is one of the best-known educators In the country. Keagon, or St. Johns, suffered a fracture of both legs below the knee, the right foot of which will be amputated later, last night at 6 o'clock by being struck by a street car at Twenty-eighth and Thurman streets. Immediately after the accident the Injured man was taken to the Good Samaritan Hospital a ad as his right foot was horribly mangled amputation was deemed necessary. Superintendent Boyn ton, of the Portland Railway Company, gave out an official statement last night to the effect that Keagon ran directly in front or the car in an attempt to board it. The car was equipped with a fender. Keagon, who is 58 years of age. has been" working for Lafe Pence. Starts on .East Oak Fill. A start was made yesterday on the filling of East Oak street, between Union ave nue and- East Sixth streets. Dump cars were run around the spur on East Washington street and Union ave nue and then out on the new trestle built on East Oak street. The greatest difficulty will probably be in keeping up the East Oak ' street sewer, which is carried on trestle between East Sixth street and Union avenue. Robbed of $4 and Watch. Frederick Blaser, employed by the Crystal Ice & Storage ' Company, reported to Sergeant of Police Cole at 10:30 o'clock last nlgnt that he was held up by two unmasked Italians as he was going home. He lives at 363 East Sixth street. He said he- was robbed of a gold watch and chain and $4 In cash, after which the highwaymen ordered him to hurry on. The holdup occurred at Union avenue and Hassalo street.
