Allib Cramer Acquitted. After hav
ing hepn out for more than two hours,
the jury that listened to the testimony
in the case of the state against Allte
Cramer yesterday afternoon returned a
verdict of not guilty. Cramer was charged
with having set fire to his home for the
purpose of defrauding the Oregon Fire
Relief Association out of $500 insurance.
The Cramer home at 1257 Albina avenue
was burned last June, and the defendant
was arrested soon afterward and has
been in jail since that time. The case
was tried in Judge Cleland's department
of the Circuit Court. Deputy District At
torney Gus C. Sloser and T. J. Cleeton
appearing for the state, while Cramer was
defended by John H. Dltchburn.
Audience Kept in Ignorance;. That
there was not a panic in the Star The
ater at 3:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon
when lire broke out in the Columbia
buildiing, adjoining, is regarded by the
police as strange, but still stranger is
the fact that, although thousands of peo
llo gathered and all the downtown tire
companies responded, those within the
playhous? never knew that a,n alarm had
been sent in. Thinking the lire was a
serious one. Captain of Police Stover dis
patched from headquarters a, wagonload
of patrolmen, but their services were not
required, as by the time they arrived the
lire was out. The tire was caused by a
defective flue, and was extinguished with
smalt loss.

IMPORTANT MEETING
In Portland of N. IT. Business Men.
The fate of one of Portland's great
wholesale establishments is to be deter
mined tomorrow. There are in this city
at present A. E. Nathan, L. J. Nathan,
Samuel Wertheimer and several other
members of the firm of Nathan, Wert
heimer & Co., wholesale manufacturers
of lino clothing. 620 Broadway and 154
Crosby street. New York, with a large
wholesale house in Portland, located at 73
Front and 207 Oak street. In fact the
only wholesale clothing house outside of
San Francisco on the entire Coast. It is
almost positively settled that the firm
will dissolve and retire from the whole
sale business. What disposition to make
of the big Fall and Winter stock will be
determined at the meeting tomorrow.
The loss of this big house would be keen
ly felt, both to Portland clothing stores
and merchants on the entire Coast, as the
character of goods sold bythis firm was
specially manufactured for the better
class of Pacific Coast trade.
