The Modern Trend
of Storekeeping Is Toward
Betterment
i
The store of today aims at perfection and is
everlastingly discontented because of its non-attainment.
This store brings to its aid every
known help to upraise it to the lofty pinnacle it
strives for and comes nearer reaching it than
any other of Portland's good stores. It employs
an expert corps of buyers, skilled in the knowl
edge of every known merchandise, and sends them
to the farthest corners of the earth to gather
goods from the producers that we may save for
our patrons the costs of intermediate handling
and commissions. A permanent headquarters and
busy office is sustained in New York City, that
we may transact business direct with that me
tropolis and provide a depot for the store's buy
ers while iii the East. In addition to the' regular
force constantly employed there, the visitor will
bow find Mr. King, our silk and dress goods chief,
who is spending several weeks selecting fabrics
for wear of local femininity next season work
ing "ahead. Today Miss Bernard, buyer of wom
en's outer garments, and Mr. E. J. Oliver, buyer
of Hnens and -domestics,-leave this- city for the
Eastern markets. 'Tis Miss-Bernard's second trip
of the present, season; she goes on for the later
things and this is the only house on the Pacific
Coast that sends its garment-buyer twice a season
to market, the only Souse that can have the later
creations of Fashion's conjuring. The buyer. of
carpets, draperies and curtains, and the toy buyer
leaves in a few days for the far Eastern markets.
An army of buyers has just returned home and
thus.it goes. Many Portland folk have visited
our New York office. They have seen it and its
workings, and have formed their own impres
sions. Some of them have told us what their im
pressions are. First, a feeling of wonder that
what stay-at-homes simply look upon as. a big
money-making store is in reality a vast school of
fashion and household thrift. The idea of see
ing representatives of mills and factories all over
the world, fathered at one store's headquarters
offering their wares,, submitting to comparisons
with the goods of rival, concerns ; bartering, plan
ning doin? all in their power to add Olds, Wort
man & King to their clientele of customers. This
great business looks carefully after- its specialty
businesses, and sends a buyer to the" New York
office to look after each one. For wonieri's ear
ments and millinery two go, for each and so it
' goef; Da -you wonder this is the "STYLE
STORE"? Do you wonder we can save you
money-when we use every- means to save on the
buying end known to the most advanced modern
merchandizes ? Do you wonder this is a "DIF
FERENT STORE"!

Tf you don't catch a glimpse of a particular style of sjit you have in mind, ask for it.. There isn't a doubt
of it's being here if 'tis correct. While the largest floor space ever' allowed by any Portland store is
given over to selling and showing of women's apparel there are casefuls of suits and .wraps we. have to
crowd out of view too great a variety for attempted description. Inexpensive exelusiveness indeed when
vou realize that numbers of suits will not be duplicated in styles even those at the most modest prices. We
ask your inspection this week particularly of the leading line of FURS in the city; in neckpieces, muffs and
sets at the lowest prices for equal qualities on the Coast.
