The fashions of today, to a greater or less ex
tent, are conceptions suggested by a renaissance
of the costumes worn at various periods of his
tory. The classic models of ancient Greece have
been utilized is a source of ideas for the building
of elegant & nodish costumes for wear of Milady
of the 20th century. The. periods which saw
Louis XI. XIII & XIV, 'the Elizabethan era
which knew Henry III, the Henry IV period,
the time of the reigns of Francis I, & Marie
Stuart, & others from whose pinnacle of great
ness las dropped as heirlooms, down thru the
ages to us here in the 6th year of the reign of
Roosevelt, many ideas from which the clever
creators of today have evolved hosts of their
most admired master conceptions in dress. The
"Directoire," "Empire" & "Incroyable," the
"Tudor" & French Restoration periods have
each contributed to Fashion's fund from which
the world's foremost dressmakers & designers
have drawn inspiration that is used in planning
the lines of "The nut-brown Autumn girl's gowns
which so gracefully & charmingly garb the de
butantes at Fashion's court this week. With
out going into detail here over the salient points
of any period of history in dress, we make pass
ing referense thruout the page to the costumes
of yesterday, only that our readers may, should
they wish, view from a modern standpoint, &
study how the revival of historic epochs in dress
has been evolved from the original modes. The

Second-Floor Salons
Follow the trend of Fashion evolution and pay a
visit to the Garment Salons this week. See the pro
fusion of styles and the marvelously original way in
which these are carried out in all the bewitching, fash
ion touches that master minds have evolved in accord
ance with authoritative dictates of great style leaders
in the world's foremost fashion centers. To visit this
exhibit these days will be, from a dress point of view,
like mingling in the very best of French and Ameri
can society. In the charming tailored models, magnifi
cent gowns and smart wraps one sees reflected with
brilliancy the very essence of dress elegancy. You catch
the flashing gaiety of New York and Paris at their
best. Fashion has indeed achieved a new series of.
inspiring triumphs. We have worked along the lines
jf least resistance. Every garment that has found its
way into our stock has sanction of the authoritative
master designers. And yet the new models are not lacking in diversity
far from it. It is a most representative collection. But all that would
lose force were it not for the modest prices. Is it not logical to suppose
that. the largest store which devotes its greater effort to ready-to-wear
garments for the new season's service is in a position to present a
bigger series of, stylish models, and at prices lower than those which its
lesser contemporaries offer t Yes, and our convention of garments for
the coming season's service demonstrates ihe force of that logic. The
best values this or any other store has ever offered at the opening of a
new season in -

Important Sale of Beautiful
Long Silk Gloves
1st Floor
Best $1.75 Gloves in Town at $1.25
Looking backward a few
weeks you'll remember how
scarce were the desirable el
bow length silk gloves. Mer
chants all over Uncle Sam's
broad domains were at their :
wits' ends to provide for
their patrons' demand and
couldn't. Factories were
running night and day to fill
orders and couldn't. Our
glove buyer was in New
York. A European maker
came to him with a tale of
a hundred dozen on the way
across the big pond, and at
that moment almost within the rays cast by
Liberty's torch. A day thru the Custom-IIouse,
a trip over land by fast express, and 1200 Port
land women made happy with the gloves they
sought, but couldn't find; and the gloves were
at old prices that ruled before Demand decreed
a rise. Man proposes but in this case Fate
knocked man's plans to smithereens. The ship
ment was delayed has just arrived maker's
fault: he suffers says "Sell the gloves for what
they'll bring." Good news for you'll need the
gloves for opera and theater wear all Winter;
elbow sleeves are pretty sure to be the mode '
next Summer; gloves will be scarce .and prices
go rocketing again. Better provide now why
not? 1200 pair go on sale Monday at the Glove
Counter Beauties ! Just the swellest gloves
shown in America this year by any house in
18-inch lengths and in the serviceable, handsome
wire mesh silk yarns that rival the finest spun
silver in appearance and sheen, yet soft and
dainty as the cobweb of the India spider. A
fabric that is more exquisite and beautiful and
will not only outwear ordinary silk, but keep
clean and dainty longer. The colors are just
what Fashion orders black, white and the
daintiest imaginable cream. Most stores would
hold these gloves today at $2.00 or $1.75. In
stead, we're going to furnish 1200 pair to our.
patrons at the pair, Monday, $1.25.
