Or.. Sept. 1. The arrival of September sees the crowd at the resorts along Clatsop Beach rapidly thinning out and It la probable that another week will make the Summer season- once more a fning of the past. Children are to be equipped and made ready for school, Win ter supplies must be Inid in at homo, and the many families who for the past two months have been qn'.etlv rusticating at the seaehoro find themselves as anxious to return to cltv life with it variety of diversion and its regular responsibilities as they were to eape to the land of cool and quiet some weeks ago. The ho tels are still comfortably filled with trans ients, but are. with each departing train, losing regular boarders who were con spicuous figures in Summer eociety, and these cannot be replaced this year. 1 he weather Is ideal and will remain so for some time to come, but every one is full of plans and hopes for the approaching Autumn, and one bv one- the cottages In the grove are donning their W inter rai ment of window boards and chimney cov ers, and a desert ed appearance is settling down upon the village. Schemes for various public improve ments for next season are forming and some of them will probably assume def inite shape before the Winter Is over and the crowds arrive next year. Meanwhile those who are departing ennnot fail to carry with them a multitude of pleasant memories for the season now drawing to a close a season which, in most respects, has been one of unusual prosperity. Ocean Slile Park Gearhart. H. T. Butterworth. who has had charge of Locksley Hall during the paBt Summer, has undertaken the management of K ruse's Beach Hotel. Mr. Butterworth . is recog-nlKed as being one of tho most capable hotel men In this section of the country, and the resort will lose none of itr popularity under his direction. The work of excavating for the founda tion of the new hotel on the sand dunes is being rushed. The past week has practically brought the season. to a close. In spite of energetic attempts on the part of many to run lt over into September. Because of the pre cedent of many years, however.' It seems next to impossible to keep things going later than the last week of August. The time of the Astoria" regatta also undoubt edly has much to do with bringing th season to an untimely end, as it with draws the entire Astoria delegation and many outsiders from the Summer resorts, and. coming as late as.it did this year, no one thinks It worth while to return to the beach. The large village of cottages 'ias taken on a deserted appearance that cannot but lend a depressing Influence upon those who have seen the season at lis height, and this depression becomes evident even before Ilwaco is reached, by the disap pearance of the fishing fleet. All through the long Summer weeks the vast bay ' at the mouth of the river has been swarmed with hundreds of staunch little fishboats which, driven by their tiny sails, and manned by daring seamen, form a spec tacle worth traveling far ,to tee. and which can be seen nowhere else. But all of these have disappeared. The bay is now a desolate waste of water, and the crowd lined up on the dock to welcome the arrival of the incoming boat is but a fee ble reminder of the throng of morry faces that greeted the newcomer a few (weeks ago. The season on the whole has been a very successful one, and Its close sees many plans maturing for next year. The prospect of a railroad direct from Port land has caused no little stir In real es tate along the beach, and every one. though departing with regret. Is full of pleasant anticipation for the future. Ocean Park. Mrs. James L. Dunlap Is spending the week with the family of Judge L-. B. Stearns. Mrs. Alfred Kerrigan, of Portland, Is visiting friends at Ocean Park. Mrs. G. A. Molden is the guest of Mrs. H. H. Halloek at the Park this week. C. H. Hill, a permanent resident of Ocean Park. Has gone for a short trip to the Astoria regatta and Portland Lon Centro left for home last Wednes day, after spending the entire season at the Park. Ben Shipley, one of the ringleaders in the merrymaking frolics of the Park, de parted for home last Monday, to the re gret of the young people remaining. Mrs. C. E. Ingman. Mrs. T. Pearson and Miss Louise Ingman. of Portland, are stopping at the Taylor Hotel. Miss Bertha Allison met with an unfor tunate accident last Monday that necessi tated her return home the following day. While attempting to leave a moving train at Nahcotta dock, she was violently thrown to the roadway, sustaining a bad ly sprained ankle and several minor bruises. Mrs. W. Dreyfmis gave a bonfire party at the beach last Friday evening that was one of tile most pleasant affairs of the sort this season. Songs were Kung and light refreshment served to further enliven the evening for the assembled guests, who were: Judge L. B. Stearns. Mrs. Spaul ding. Misses Sterling. Dorothy Gill. Alta Burke. Misses Hahighorst. Heiun Streit, Mrs. Habighorst. Donald Rowe, Ben Ship ley, David Hood. Guy Allison, of Kirksville, Mo., ar ranged a sunset prayer meeting in the open air on the beach last Sunday eve ning. Religious addresses by Mr. Allison. Miss Thelma Carter, of Ellensburg, and Rev. Mr. Elliott, of Vancouver, were ll tened to with interest by a large audi ence. Vocal music by a quartet composed of Captain Powell, Mr. Weston, Guy Al lison and H. H. Gridley. together with a number of religious anthems by the en tire crowd, helped to make the meeting a success. Mrs. Stephen Coffin, a pionetr of 1MT. passed her STth birthday with her rela tives at Ocean Park last week. Ocean Park. The members of Camp Buckley, after a pleasant month, at Dr. Jones' cottage, broke camp yesterday. Mrs. H. M. lias sett, Ruth and Frank Buckley return to their home In Portland: Mrs. S. Frazier, Miss Buckley, the twlnbables and their nurse, leaving for Seattle. Long Beach and Tioga. Miss Edna Jeffrey, who is to be mar ried soon after her- return home in the Fall, was the recipient of a charming beach-shower party at the Breakers Ho tel last Wednesday evening. The affair was conducted under the hospitality of Mrs. Bert Irwin, and was one of the most pleasant social functions of the entire season here. Dinner was served on a table decorated with charming taste and originality the centerplere being a miniature U. S. lifeboat in which the gifts were placed. Small oars carved from wood and' set in tinfoil oarlocks served as place cards, and the whole effect was enlivened with an abundance of ferns and flowers. After dinner the party adjourned to the ballroom on the lower floor -w,here, after invitations to participate had been given to a num ber of young men, dancing was indulged In until a late hour. Those present were: The Misses Edna Jeffrey, Frances Jeffrey, Margaret O'Conner. Anne Ditch burn. Alice Forbes, Lee Todd Bingham. Clara Jones. Lillian Loller, Tab Holmes, Mrs. Albert Cousins and Mrs. Irwin. A very successful concert for the bene-
