Newcastle and Others Say They Will Try to Have the Property Taken Over by Uncle Sam. Complaints continue against the half breed owner of St. Martin's hot springs, near Carson, Wash., who is accused of falling to accommodate the public In an adequate manner. These springs are paid to be tne finest in the country for rheu matics and stomach disorders. The own er is a French-Indian named St. Martin. Hundreds go to the springs every Sum mer and of late a number have decided to call the attention of the Government authorities to the situation. St. Martin and his wife are said to conduct a very unsatisfactory hotel on the grounds. Campers are charged 12.50 a week for the privilege of staying on the place. The surroundings are pronounced unhealthy and unsanitary. The charge is also made that neither St. Martin nor his wife try to be accommodating to visitors. The Indians became owners of these wonderful springs years ago. St. Martin is worth considerable money. The springs are said to contain health-giving prop erties not found elsewhere in the North west, consequently are well known and would bo visited by thousands annually If the mineral waters and surround ings were in different hands. Ir. C. C. Newcastle, of Portland, ac companied by a party of seven, returned Friday from a stay of three weeks at St, Martin's, indignant at the alleged treatment offered himself and party. He says he will put the matter In the handa of an attorney in hopes the Government will In time remedy the situation.- "Several hundred people are camped on the property owned by the St. Martins," Ir Newcastle said yesterday, "for which privilege they pay the Indians $2.60 a week. The campers are compelled to draw their own water from a well and do - everything else about the place. Neither 8t. Martin nor his wife tries in any way to make things pleasant or to assist the visitors in any way. As a re sult, everyone who visits the springs Is utterly disgusted with the treatment te receives. .The two Indians are unaccommodating and at times insulting. They no longer have a bus meet the steamers. People who arrive there, many of them In a weakened condition on account of 111 health, are compelled to walk miles and then perhaps be refused admission to even camp in the vicin-ity of the hot springs. This causes much suffering, par-' ticularly among women and children. In several Instances that I know of men have gone to St. Martin's with their fami lies and when not allowed camping grounds had to move on for miles before a suitable place could be found away from the land owned by the Indians." Others besides Dr. Newcastle have in terested themselves In the situation, and will make an effort to have the hot springs taken away from the present owners and made by the Government a health resort for the general public. Picnic at Steel Inn. The members of Portland Assembly, No; 26, of the Americans, attended a plcnio at Steel Inn, Friday afternoon and eve ning, at the Invitation of W. G.
