Ac cording to Annie Fox, who lives on the East Side, her friend and neighbor. Fred Sanfmibur, has a method of feeding his horse that Is worthy of special Investl atlon by the Humane Society. Mrs. Fox says Sanfenbur approaches his horse dally with a handful of hay, lets the animal get a sniff at it and then brings on three buckets of water to wash down the sniff which has served as a meal. 8he thought the police ought to Investigate this prac tice at once. The police, to whom Mrs. Vox told her yarn, learned that a neigh borhood row was responsible for Annie's complaint. Readt for Pavement. Union avenue has now been made ready for paving south of East Ankeny street. For the past week property-owners have been busy putting in water, sewer and gas con nections, and the telephone company laid its underground conduits, so it will not be necessary to tear up the street as soon as the pavement has been laid. Smyth & Howard have the contract for laying the bitulithic pavement for the blocks between East Ankeny and Oak streets, and they will lay the same pavement on the first block at East Burnside street. Cottage Bitrnet. The home of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Cherry, at Flrland. on the Mount Scott Railway, was destroyed by fire Friday night. The loss was about fciCOO. partly covered by insurance. Mr. Cherry's residence was among the first houses butlt in that section. The cause or the fire Is not known. This is the third Iiousa that has been burned in' that dis trict within the past few months. Once a fire starts there, nothing can save the building. The Oak-street sewer through the new embankment on Grand avenue is giving trouble. It seems to have parted, or was crushed by the weight of the dirt. Dr. Hirsch Werner, a Jewish rabbi of Los Anjyeles. is paying this city a visit and Friday night preached at Ahaval Sholom Synagogue, Clay and Park streets, upon his favorite theme, "Universal Peace." This after noon at 4 o'clock Rabbi Werner will preach in the English language at the memorial services to be held at the Neigh borhood House, First and Hall streets, in honor of Dr. Theodore Hertzel, founder of Zionism. The services will be under the auspices of the Excellent Zion Society. House op Good Shepherd. A fine addi tion to the House of the Good Shepherd, at East Twentieth and Irving streets, has just been completed, furnishing a much needed new classroom and several dormi tories. The former classroom will now be used as a chapel. The Home is full at present, and the inmates are in the best of health and spirits. Orders for embroi dery, hemstitehing, sewing and dressmak ing are taken by the Sisters, who teach the inmates of the Home all kinds of needlework. Y. W, C. A. at Home. Graves, who died at Seaview Friday, will be held this afternoon at 3 o'clock at Holman's under taking parlors under the auspices of the Christian Scientists. Deceased was a sis ter of Mrs. Edward Alden Beals and a daughter of Mrs. N. A. Middaugh, of thts city. Her brother, F. W. Middaugh, of Spokane, Is here to attend the service and will take the remains to Medical Lake for interment. Teachers Comb Tomorrow. An excur sion party of schoolteachers from New York, traveling In a special car, will ar rive, in Portland tomorrow morning and spend the day sightseeing. In the morn ing the tourists will make a trip up the river to view the scenery.
