BY DECREE OF CONSUELO Duchess or Marlborough Censors American Visitors Strange Mys tery of Townsliend Wedding. Morgan Scorns Title. BY THE COUNTESS OF BLANKSHIRK. (Special Cable to the Central News and The Oregonlan. ) LONDON. June 9. Great surprise has been created In Anglo-American social circles at the cold shoulder given the Coumcss Bonl de Castellane and the Goulds generally by the leaders of English society. I have talked the matter over with people in the court circle, and I am led to believe that the "taboo" came di rect from Buckingham Palace. Consuelo, Duchess of Marlborough, is the reigning royal favorite, and therefore the queen of the American colony in Eng land. She It Is who gives the Lord Great Chamberlain at the palace Information about visiting Americans who desire court introductions or their names on the visit ing lists of society here. The King is get ting more particular every year regarding those who shall be received and 1 am told that Anna Gould, Countess Boni. Ims the black mark put against her name on account of the pending divorce suit in Paris. Blacklisted for Having Lawsuits. As for the Howard Goulds, the f;icl that Mrs. Gould was an actress In no way affects her standing, but she has had so many lawsuits of one kind or another with tradesmen In the United States, all of which have been more or less reported here, that society knows her better on account of these than anything else. Neither the Goulds nor the Countess have taken the trouble to call at their re spective embassies. That is always the first step toward the entree In Ixmdon. In some quarters the title of the Count Boni is somewhat sneered at, and coming, as It does, with the purchase of a French chateau, is classed with the titles be stowed by the pope. There are many cas tles and chateaus on the continent for sale, which carry with their possession the title of the land. Some of these even are marquisates. The Countess Boni is living very quietly, but Gould Is going In strongly for balloon ing. The Goulds will next month go yacht ing, and the Countess will probably go with them. Townsliend Scandal Blows Over. That horrible little Townshend scandal is practically over now. Iast week the Commissioners in Lunacy announced that the Marquis had quite "recovered'' and everything is once more serene. I understand, however. that the Mar chioness will keep her husband abroad for a year or more. A trip around the world is being planned. They will visit the United States, of course, entering by San Francisco and leaving via Can ada, after visiting all the cities and places of interest. The Marchioness deserves a good deal of sympathy, and yet society here has none for her. She was, as you will re member, the daughter of a practically unknown lawyer and newspaperman. She is good-looking, with plenty of color and a mass of curly hair. She Is rather a big woman, with a voluptuous figure. The Marquis is a little-weazened up shrimp with namby-pamby ideas, a fal setto voice and mincing steps. Provi dence evidently meant him for a girl. The Marchioness is a brilliant writer, and some of her verses are extremely clever and of the Ella Wheeler Wilcox order. Always Will Be Mystery. I understand the father of the Mar chioness happened to meet the Marquis while investigating some story for his newspaper. He got the youth to come to his house and Introduced him to his daughter. She did the rest, and the Marquis' mother tells her friends that the poor boy was swept off his feet anil carrrled to church and married before he was able to wake up. You may re member when some publicity was given to the case that the wife declared it was a love match. And that is why society frowns on the Marchioness, because everyone knows that such a glorious red-blooded woman as she is could never love a miserable manniktn like the Mar quis. There will always be a mystery in this case, for no lover would leave his bride after the bridal night and hide himself from her for a week. The Marquis, you will remember, fled to a male friend of his with whom he had previously lived and to whom he gave large sums of money. When he was brought back, the doctors pronounced him Insane, because he de clared he loved this man friend and hated all women. But now that his wife has got him to herself in a quiet French watering place and he has been pro nounced entirely "recovered," he prob ably has changed his ideas. The Mar quis is not likely to live long, and the only interest society now takes In the case is whether a son and heir to the title and estates will make an appear ance. Then society will sit up and take notice and gossip and whisper for nine days. Morgan Kef uses Title. There are scores of Counts of the Holy Roman Empire in the United States, al though they do not vaunt their titles before their fellow-citizens. Mr. Ward, of Detroit, who lives permanently In Lon don now. however, uses his and is known as Count Ward. The title is not recog nized in official circles, however. Some months ago J. Pierpont Morgan paid an important business " visit to the pone at Rome, and was offered a title by his holiness. He very promptly refused It and also one of the papal orders. It is understood that this is the last year Mr. Morgan will reside in the United States, and the next year will see him perma nently settled down in his palace at Prince's Gate. Xegro Was Not Guilty. LEMARS. Iowa, June 9. Ebenezer Davis, a "wild man" with a circus, con fessed today that he assaulted Miss Josephine Willmes, for which a negro narrowly escaped lynching Thursday 1 night.
