Doing Effective "Work. The Port of
Portland dredge has got down to effec
llvc work the past two days with satis
factory results. Before, the work was
mainly preparatory, but now the real fill
ing on the low ground goes forward on
the cuth side of East Alder street. The
material pumped Is composed of atones,
gravel and sand. Before the pumping
was started yestlay It was estimated
by Engineer lockwood and W. I. Boise
that WO yards of material had been de
posited on the low grounds at a cost of
20 cents a cubic yard, which Is ?ry much
lower than any AH has yet been made,
but better results are expected hencefor
ward. Just how low a ligure It will be
demonstrated that material can be
pumped from the bottom of the river to
the low ground cannot be foretold, and
on this depends the success of the ex
periment under way. but those Interested
think that this way of filling will be
shown to be the best and cheapest, which
is the object that 1? sought. Prominent
men hae been watching the work of the
dredge since it has boen operated. In
deed, there is constantly a crowd at the
yhore end of the pipe line.
