NORTH BEACH, Aug. 12. (Special.)
The past week has been one of un
usual activity among the social cir
cles here, the number of parties; excur
sions and entertainments of various sorts
being: almost without precedent. At
no time this year has the beach beon
Jf so well patronized as now, and
at no time previous has the crowd
been half so well organized. The beach
Is crowded with strollers and loungers
throughout the entire day, and is il
luminated for miles at night by count
less bonfires. Every available convey
ance is now In constant use, carrying
merry picnic parties here and there;
the dances are crowded every dance
night, and the many little devices
known to the landlords and hostosscs
of the hotels and boarding-houses for
furnishing amusement to their guosts
are being brought into use and are
greatly appreciated. In spite of the
fog, which has made some of the morn
ings somewhat disagreeable, the
weather, as a whole, has beon charm
ing, the air being cool and exhilarat
ing most of the time. Taking all
things into consideration, the season
now seems to be rapidly approaching
its zenith, and it Is probable that the
next two weeks will be exceedingly
lively ones at all the reports, as every
one Is anxious to have all the fun pos
sible before the crowd abandons the
beach, which usually happens about
the first of September-

Mrs. Joseph H. Penney entertained a
party of beachers at North Head the
beginning of the week. All enjoyed
themselves very much.
A large excursion to North Head took
place last Friday. Taking plenty of
luncheon, the party spent the entire
day until late In the afternoon roam
ing around this pleasant picnic ground,
when they returned to their homes well
pleased with the day's amusement. Those
participating were: Mrs. T. Wood, Mrs.
E. E. Manhelm. Mrs. Duch. Miss G.
Llpman, Miss Evelyn Cohen, Miss Duch,
Miss Minnie Cohen, Mrs. William Stark.

Another dlllghtful trip to North Head
was enjoyed Saturday by a party from
the Salt Air, who went in a large wagon,
took a nicely prepared lunch, and spent
a most pleasant day. Those In the party
were: Miss Lillian Bogle, Miss Jean
Cornett. Miss M. Evelyn Hurley, Miss
Jessie L. Hurley, Miss Marian Miller.
Wesley Reed, Mr. and Miss Miller and
Mrs. Scott.
The "second party of the Juvenile Court
Club has arrived and Is now in camp
near Sea View. Reports from the camp
indicate that all of the youngsters are
having a splendid time and thus far the
organization has proved a great siccess.
Fresh fish Is furnished the camp every
day by William Graham, who also took
the boys on his launch to the Sand Is
land seining grounds last Thursday. Wed
nesday was spent in a long drive on the
beach, which was very much enjoyed.
Merchants of Portland are continually
sending loads of watermelons and
oranges, the people of Ilwaco and the
beach are extending every courtesy, and
all possible Is being done to make the
trip a memorable one to the fortunate
boys, participating In It."
Entertainments.
The guests of the Salt Air enjoyed a
verj pleasant sacred concert Sunday eve
ning. Miss Evelyn Hurley, recently from
New York, sang several songs and the
Excelsior sextet composed of Misses Hur
ley, Beatty, Bogle, Miller, Mrs. Pope and
Earl Latourette, rendered a number of
selections which added much to the en
tertainment. Miss Jean Cornett, of North
Yakima, was the accompanist. In which
capacity she showed great efficiency.
A charming open-air party was given
on the spacious porch of the Rustic Cot
tage last Monday evening in honor of
miss beia Goddard of Portland. The
piazza was Illuminated by a mass of Chi
nese lanterns which gave the place a
brilliant appearance, and Fantan, the
evening's game, was enjoyed until late.
when refreshments were served. Those

Thursday evening, an entertainment
suggestive of originality took place at
the Hackney Cottage. The affair was
strictly a young ladles' party, and as
dancing was .to furnish the principal
amusement" Tor the evening, half of the
young ladies, came In men's attire, the
rest wearing bathing-suits, that they
might share In the evening's merriment.

casion, which was declared a great suc
cess Vby those participating, all outsiders
being denied admittance. Those present

took place at the Salt Air, the guests of
the house as well as their outside friends
from Sea View and Long Beach being

tained by the numerous artists present,
refreshments of ice cream and cake were
served when the party adjourned. The
programmo consisted of: Piano duets by
Mrs. and Tudle Schacht and Mr. Ross,
Jr., and Miss Ross; vocal solos by Miss
Edwlna Mastlck, Mr. P. H. Ross. Miss
Tudle Schacht, Miss M. Evelyn Hurley

Sea View Specialties.
For the past week a crowd known as
the Wig-Wam Tribe of Sea View has
been making things lively. Tuesday, the
operations commenced when, in the even
ing, after an afternoon's work with a
team hauling driftwood, a huge bonfire
was started which proved one of the
largest ever seen on the beach. All of
the guests of the Hackney Cottage and
roost of their neighboring friends wero
present and after a pleasant social even
ing, they sang familiar songs, after which
refreshments of fruit, candy, peanuts and
cake were served on the beach, when the
party dispersed.
Not content with this hilarity, a dance
was decided upon for the following even
ing, and Wednesday night saw the Hack
ney Cottage bedecked with Chinese lan
terns and thronged with young folks as
a consequence, the dance taking place In
the large dining-room which Is admirably
suited for .the purpose. Delicious punch
was served throughout the evening and
the famous kitchen handout took place
at the conclusion of the evening's amuse

An elaborate mask ball took place at
The Breakers Monday night. The affair
was one of the largest social events of
the season la tho number of guests, and
the Improvised costumes of the dancers
wero the sources of much merriment
throughout the evening. Perhaps" the
most unique costume was that of Myron
Aronson, whose make-up as a blonde
young lady wa3 made highly amusing by
a wig made of unstranded Topo which, at
a little distance, presented a very real
istic appearance. The oall' was opened
by a grand march, In which all partici
pated. After this, dancing was Indulged
in by those whose costumes would per
mit the exercise, the prize being given
to James Rosenfeld, alias Miss James,
and Miss Enid Rothchlld, alias Baby Blue.

Cross Bats on Beach. Sands.
In order to show people that nothing Is
neglected at the beach, a baseball game
was arranged Sunday. The teams par
ticipating were the East Portland and
Ft. Columbia, toe East Portland aggrega
tion winning by a score of 11 to 10, after:
a vory exciting game, in which heavy
batting was the principal feature. The

CLATSOP BEACH.
Although the resorts here have been
crowded to their utmost during the past
week, the number of social events taking
place is surprisingly small. The Kansas
delegation to the Exposition visited the
beach Wednesday, and made things lively
for a day, as much Interest and amuse
ment was occasioned bv these neonta frnm
itho "Inland empire," most of whom had
never before seen the ocean. Removing
their shoes and stockings, almost the en
tire party Indulged in wading, and some
even tasted the water to make sure if It
were really salty, .while . the chlid-like
glee with which they regarded tha great
expanse , of water brought smiles to the
old-timers present.
Tho weather has been Ideal, the sun
being warm and bright most of the time.
This fact, together with the absence of
wind, has brought hundreds out upon the
beach during the long Summer afternoons
and evenings, and fixes atmosphere of rest
and laziness Is delightful to all fortunate
enough to be here to appreciate it.
Gcarhart Park.
Another huge bonfire similar to the one
of the previous week took place at Gcar
hart last Wednesday evening. Again wero
the cottages aroused by a dinner boll and
the noise -of fireworks, and again everyone
turned out to witness the great spectacle
of a burning pile of driftwood. 30 feet or
more In height. As before, tho orchestra
played on the beach, and hot candy was
distributed among the crowd for pulling.
Mr. Rose expects to make these fires
weekly affairs, now that his first efforts
have proved so highly successful.
The first dance of the season here took
place last Saturday evening in the dining
room of Kruse's Beach Hotel Practically
all of the young -people of the park wero
present, as were many of their elders, and
the entertalnmont met with such approval'
that It has been decided to continue these
i dances every Saturday during the remain-
I er of the season.
j Mrs. Kate Brledwcll, a well-known so-
! prano of Salt Lake, gave a delightful con
cert at Kruse's Beach Hotel last Monday.
In addition to this, several selections were
rendered by the hotel orchestra, which
added much toward making the evening a
success.
