Adolph Astboff. superintendent of forest rangers in the Cascade dMslon, Is still confined to his room In St. Vincenfa Hospital by Injuries recently received -while inspecting his district, but is mak ing good progress toward recovery- He wa able to sit up lor a time yesterday, and his wound is in favorable condition. It -will be -about .three weeks before he can resume active duties. Mr. AsthofTs district extends from the Columbia south to the Three Sisters in the Cascade Mountains, in which there are many rangers. His daughter is looking after the office details at present, and trained rangers are out In the district. Danger of forest flres will not be imminent until about a month, and by that time Super intendent AEthoff will be able to be on the ground. CoMiNa to Establish a Spruce Match Factort. John Dickinson, a real estate dealer of the East Side, says that capital ists are coming from Sweden to Portland to establish a . large match factory. Matches are. to be manufactured out of spruce timber, of which there is an abun dance in the Northwest. For the past three years Mr. Dickinson has been cor responding with these men, who repre sent large concerns in Sweden, and re cently he got word they were on the way to Portland to establish a factory here. Mr. Dickinson says it is their intention to establish one of the largest factories in the Northwest. Some time ago he sent to Sweden some Oregon spruce to be turned into matches to ascertain the value of the wood for that purpose. The test proved satisfactory. Memorial Programme. Following is the programme for the exercises In mem ory of the late Commander-in-Chief W. W. F.PIke will be in charge of the exercises. The public is invited to attend. Ground may be reached by electric cars. ' For Grand Encampment. Ex-Department Commander. B. F. Pike, now campod in the. Sellwood T&rk Is arranging for a large delegation of G. A. R. members, to attend the National encampment, which takes place la Denver," September S.. He proposes that the party be made up of both Oregon and Washington members of the G. A. R., together with women of the auxiliaries, who shall travel in one party. Mr. Pike hopes to get up a party of 30 or M for this trip from both states to travel In the same car. He will be glad to hear from all who expect to at tend the National encampment. Portland Bot Succeeds. Robert Hoofer, a Portland young man. now a prominent merchant of Canyon City, Is visiting relatives and friends In Portland. Two. years ago Mr- Hoofer was running a country store In Falrvlcw, which he sold out and went to Canyon City. He is now president of the Commercial Company, a large mercantile firm of that city, and is satisfied with the prospects. Railroad con nection Is coming, ho says, to that sec lion. X-EO Is Fractured. William Moore, a llnemaji in the employ of the General Electric Company, yesterday was knocked from a pole on Williams avenue and Fre mont street. Upper Alblna, by coming In contact with a live .wire. He fell about 30 feet, one leg being fractured. The elec tric current burned his breast and one of his wrists slightly, but he was not otherwise Injured by it He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where his fractured leg was set. Oddfellows' Lodge Anniversart. Members of Mllwaukle Lodge No. 179, I. O. O. F.. will meet In their hall at about 2:30 o'clock this afternoon, and march to the Episcopal Church, where an address will be delivered by Rev. J. Kl Hammond, of Oregon City. It will be the first anni versary of this lodge. Will Hold a Reunion. A special meeting of the M. A. Ross post, G. A. R., at Pleasant Home, was called for last evening to make arrangements for hold ing the ISth annual reunion. Just where it will take place has not been decided, but committees will .have charge of the whole affair. Woodlawn Man Sued. I. Freeman, representing the Hollwood Cash Register Company, lias filed papers in the East Side court, to recover J1K3 from Harry M. Vail, of Woodlawn, balance due on the aale price of a cash register.
