All mall subscriptions must be paid for In advance. Will Build Electric Power Ljne. B. B. Boswell has gone to Rossland, B. C, where he will superintend the construc tion of a 200-mile wire line for" the trans mission of electric power for a large 6melter at Greenwood. The line will be iretchcd through a rough and timbered country, and a right-of-way 100 feet wide will be cleared. It will take about IS months to complete the job. The line Is for the Western Kootenay Power & Light Company, for which Mr. Bo?wcll has built several lines before. "The Masterpieces" Free. Dr. House will give a series of sermons on "The Masterpieces" each Sunday evoning at the First Congregational Church, Madison and Park streets. At each sermon there will be distributed free a large picture to each member of the congregation, to be studied in connection with the sermon. Sunday evening the picture will be "The Transfiguration," by Raphael. Monet Is Lacking. Officers of St. Johns municipal government are serving practically without pay. "With the excep tion of the little income from Cedar Park license, the city has no Income with which to pay salaries. There la not money enough to pay Recorder Hanks, who has to put in all his time. The City Attorney and Chief of Police take their pay out in honors. Complains of Ingratitude. L. Baum, a tea and coffee vendor, complains that a woman by the name of Reed, lo whom he says he restored a lost satchel and some valuable papers, has been malign ing him. He states that, Inasmuch as he caused to bo returned to her the lost ar ticles, he regards her alleged words against him since as base ingratitude. St. Johns School Election. On the re sult of the school election will depend whether the district will issue 510,000 bonds to provide four additional school rooms. In the district there are now nearly 600 pupils of the school age, and 400 were enrolled last year. A director also will be elected. Polls will be opened in the schoolhousc. Milwaukie Teachers Are Elected. MllwaUkie school directors elected the fol lowing teachers for the ensuing year: Miss Mildred Ruegg, principal; Miss Emma M. Lance, Miss Marlon Harring ton and Miss Kate Casto. At the close of the past year there were nine gradu ates from the grammar grade. Wanted in Oakland, Cal. Madame Reginald Ruff, styling herself a clairvoy ant was arrested by Detectives Kerrigan ancf Snow yesterday on a charge of lar ceny. Sbc Is wanted In Oakland. Cal., for the robbery of jewelry. She will be held here, pending the arrival of an officer from the South. At the Citt Park. Joseph Michaels, of Heppner. has presented to the City Park a half-grown coyote from Eastern Oregon. The Gila monster presented by J. H. Hlrtzman from Arizona is doing very well. The Gila monster, as every one knows, is-deadly poisonous. The "Merit System" advocate, on the School Board, Mr. Herman Wittenberg, is bitterly opposed to the election of B. S. Pague as a member of the Board. This opposition to Mr. Pague is a vouch for his ability, character and fitness for the position. To Start Bank at Echo. James Johns and W. S. Hcnninggcr. who intend ing. to start a bank at Estaeada, have de cided that they will go to Echo. Eastern Oregon where they will establish bank ing and other lines of business. Baseball! Baseball!
