Mills, Seattle, have recently purchased
the business of Bogge & Storp, located
corner Front and Taylor streets. Lilly.
Bogardus & Co. are among the largest
and most representative of Seattle s lead
ing business houses. They have built up
a business in Seattle which today covers
all parts of the Pacific Northwest, and
in addition to their trade In the local
field they have built up an export business
of considerable magnitude. The Portland
branch of this house will be known as
the Charles H. Lilly Company. They
will deal extensively in seeds, poultry
supplies, fertilizers and dairy supplies.
Mr. Charles H. Lilly, senior member of
the Seattle house, was In Portland re
cently, and It was under his direct super
vision that purchase of the extensive
business of Rogge & Storp was consum
mated.
Teachers Are Elected. Directors of
the Arleta School district, on the Mount
Scott railway, have elected the following
teachers for the year beginning next Sep
tember: W. M. Miller, principal; Mrs.
A. R. Brown. Sixth and Seventh Grades;
Gertrude Vollans, Miss Julia Spooncr,
Miss Higgins, Miss Cora Love and Miss
Colb. It is expected that a two-room
building will have to be erected this Sum
mer. and perhaps eight teachers cm
ployed. The school will close June 9,
with graduating exercises in the evening.

Kin wring Up the 'Big Embankment.
The Pacific Bridge Company is comnlet
ing the embankment on Bast Washington
street, between Union avenue and East
First street. It only now remains to level
up the fill and extend the south side some
what, when the embankment will be com
pleted. Between East First and Water
streets. Geibisli and Joplin, the work Is
somewhat behind, as the filling is being
oonc by means of wagons. When the
earth deposited on the street has settled
sufficiently a plank roadway will be laid.
Thrown From a Train. John White
was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital early
yesterday morning by the police. He was
suffering from .injuries to hts leer, m
flicted by being thrown from an O. R. &
N. train near The Dalles. He was steal
ing a ride. It is alleged, and was kicked
oft the cars by a brakeman. He Is said
to have given a fictitious name at the
hospital. The police claim his real name
is James Canavan, and that he recently
attempted to commit suicide at his home

Kaspar Vandran Recovers. Kaspar
vandran has so far recovered from his
wounds that he has left Good Samaritan
Hospital and gone to his home on the
East Side. He was recently shot by Joseph
Youns, who is said to have been jealous
of him. Young is a nervous wreck as a
result, and Is confined In a local sani

Death of Mrs. Laura Everett. Miss
Laura Everett, wife of V. L Everett,
principal of the Falrvlew School, died
Wednesday.. A brief service was held at
her late home, when the body was taken
to Hood River for interment. Mrs. Ever
ett leaves a husband and two children,
the youngest a baby only six days old.
Will Make Portland His Home. Mr.
M. L. Allison, formerly Mayor of Grand
Junction. Colo., has purchased eight lots
at Reservoir Park, and will erect an ele
gant house on the property. Mr. Allison
is wry much taken with the climate of
Portland and will make his future home
here.
Lineman Is Recovering. Lewis Long,
the lineman who fell from a pole in the
Lewis and Clark Exposition grounds Fri
day afternoon, is recovering from his in
juries at Good Samaritan Hospital. No
bones were, broken It has been proved,
but he was painfully bruised.
Its Last Meeting. The last meeting
of the class for the study of the Apocry
pha will be held Wednesday, May 24, at
2:30 P. M.. at the Selling-Hirsch building.

New Ferry Causes Improvements.
The operation of the new Alblna. ferry
at the foot of Randolph street has made
a marked change In everything In that
neighborhood, although the ferry has been
running only about two weeks. Consid
erable teaming traffic use the new ferry,
owing to the easy grades leading to the
Alblna streets. Improvements in building
are being made around the Alblna landing
as far back as Goldsmith street. For
a year this district has been very dilapi
dated and many buildings have been de
serted, but the indications are that all
this condition is to be changed. Already
many of the deserted and partly-wrecked
houses are being repaired, and there is
now every indication that this part of
Albina will pick up right along.

May Festival Held at Baby Home.
The annual May festival was held yes
terday afternoon at the new Baby Home
building. There was a large attendance
of the friends of the institution, Mrs.
Charles Sltton, president, and members
of the board of directors. The rooms in
the handsome new structure were attrac
tively decorated. Those assisting were

linger was unanimously adopted:

for the Emancipation of India from Caste
Slavery lost Its honored and beloved pres
ident: the community In which he lived
and labored, one pf its noble pioneers; the
state, one or its most excellent citizens;
the United States, one of the most able,
impartial and upright Judges; and the
people of India, one of their truest
friends: and be it further
Resolved. That these our unanimous
sentiments be spread upon the records of
the society of which he was the president
since its organization; that a copy of these
resolutions De sent to tne Bereaved fam
ily: and that the same be printed in our
city newspapers and In India.

AT PORTAGE ROAD OPENING
Crowds From Up River "Will Gather
at The Dalles.
It is certain that one of the largest
crowds that has been gathered together
in Oregon for many years will assemble
at The Dalles on June 3" to witness the
opening of the portage road. The mem
bers of the Open River Association are
beginning to report that the people of the
Upper Columbia River are preparing to
come to the exercises in great numbers,
both by water and rail, while it is learned
that the people in every direction aro
planning to be present.
The steamer Xorma, running from Ri
paria. on the upper river toward The
Dalles, will bring a load of people to the
opening, while requests" have been made
of the Open River Association for three
boats to be used on the lower river. The
programme is being rapidly put into shape
and in a very short time all the details of
the exercises will have been arranged.

Three FIbrcm Are Amputated.
While working yesterday afternoon in a
furniture factory at Front and Davis
streets, an accident among the machinery
happened, whereby the right hand of G.
M. Vanderhook, 17 years old, was severely
Injured. He was taken to the Good Sa
marl tan Hospital, where it became neces
sary to amputate three of the fingers of
the injured hand.
