Building Active.
Upper Washington 6treet has received
more attention from purchasers of realty
of 'late than any one district. More than
three-fourths of the frontage on Wash
ington street between Fourteenth and
Twentieth streets has changed hands
within the last few months. Last week
brought out the sale of 460 feet, occupied
"by the old Exposition building, to Russell
& Blyth and F. W. Leadbetter, and an
SO-foot lot .across the street by Frank
T. Hart for JS000. On the latter site a
three-etory frame building will be erected
Immediately. A similar structure with a
Jreater frontage will be erected at Six
teenth and Washington. At the extreme
upper end, just east of Twenty-third, the
new hotel to be built by a Silverfleld for
Mrs. Sarah Hill Ih now under course of
construction. It will be of the apartment
house outward appearance, which is likely
to become a common form of architecture
in Portland before long, as in most Amer
ican cities.
Dwellings, however, still lead In the rec
ords of building permits issued. Of those
issued last week, the following averaged
between $3000 and $4000: J. G. Burness,
Belmont and East Twelfth; D. J. Finn,
East Harrison and East Ninth; F. Breske,
Hall and Park; Mrs. Carrie F. Aitken,
"East Seventeenth and Alder; Dr. Holden,
Spring and Chapman, on Portland Heights,
and Dr. A. E. Whiteside, Twenty-first and
Qulmby.
The principal, sale of down-town realty
-was the southeast corner of Second and
Stark to T. Scott Brooke and Dr. A. J.
Giesy for $50,000. '

University Park
Is the bon ton residence portion of the
whole Peninsula, because it has a
building restriction that keeps out
shanties and harbors for poverty; it
has a liquor restriction that prohibits
saloons and other places of vice; has
the Columbia University, which brings
a cultured class. It has the far-famed
Bull Run water, Portland public
schools, boulevards, wide streets and
alleys. It lies central to four miles
of deep water front, where employ
ment is furnished in the mills, fac
tories and docks, for all who desire to
work. Beautiful residences are
springing up as if by magic Prop
erty values are advancing. Prices
range from $60 to $300 per lot ac
cording to size and Ipcation, one-tenth
cash, balance $5 monthly oh each lot,
without interest or taxes. Prancis I.
