Unitarian "Woman's Alliance. The
regular literary day of the alliance prom
ises to be one of rare and novel interest.
The subject is "Mountain Sunshine and
Summer Snow," with Miss Gertrude Met
calfe as speaker. Miss Metcalfe Is a care
ful observer and gifted -writer, as well
as an enthusiastic Mazama, and has made
frequent trips with this organization to
the summit of our most famous saow
covered mountain peaks. The talk, with
Its Illustrations, will be given In the
Mazama Club rooms at the City Hall
next Wednesday afternoon, beginning at
2:30 o'clock. The members of the alliance
extend a cordial invitation to friends and
strangers alike who may be able to at
tend, as the opportunity Is a rare one. A
short business session of the alliance will
be held at the church parlors at promptly
2 o'clock, after which Its members will go
to the City Hall to hear Miss Metcalfe.
Sumner Post. G. A. R., Celebrates
Anniversart. Sumner Post, G. A. R.,
No. 12, celebrated its Twenty-second an
niversary last evening In Its hall on
Union Avenue. After the transaction of
business the doors were thrown open for
Invited friends. Long tables were quickly
spread, tin cups and plates produced,
when the assemblage of old soldiers sat
down to a repast of hot coffee, baked
beans and crackers, a meal that reminded
them of army days. Following the repast
came much snapshooting and skirmish
ing, in which J. A. Newell, M. 1. Pratt,
J. W. Ogilbee. Daniel Clark and others
t6ok part. Many of the comrades rarely
peen at meetings were present. The old
boys were young again and fought over
the battles of long ago.
.Michigan Will Entertain. The Mich
igan Society will entertain the members
of the other state societies at the Con
cordia Hall Tuesday night. The commit
tee having the affair In charge state that
It is to be a "basket luncheon." Each
lady will bring a basket of eatables suffi
cient for two persons and her partner in
the feast will . be selected by numbers
-takon from a hat. A musical and liter
ary programme will "be given, and after
the luncheon a dance will be enjoyed.
Extensive Improvement. At Jersey
and Philadelphia streets. St. Johns, E.
C Holbrook, owner of the park block, is
having the land cleared of trees and tim
ber preparatory to erecting three build
ings, which will cost moro than 520,000.
On the block stood the first car-barn a
landmark erected In St. Johns. It Is be
ing torn down to make way for the
buildings'. Two of the buildings will be
two-story frame structures, and the third
will be -of- -briek.-
Asks Countt to Assume Bill. The
question of repairing the new Albina
ferryboat has been taken up by Mayor
Williams. He asks the county to assume
the bills for the necessary work upon the
ground that the boat was all right when
turned over to the court for its test trip.
The builders have been asked to estimate
the cost of putting the boat in proper con
dition, and when that is received will en
ter into negotiations with the county.
There appeared in the columns of this
paper on last Friday an article referring
to the -Penny 'Arcade and the arrest of a
young lady. I wish to state that my Ar
cade is in the Imperial Hotel building and
that nothing of the kind occurred In my
place. I have a man on the floor at all
times to keep the kind of characters out
of my place that this article referred to.

Horticultural Board Will Meet.
Preparations are being made for the semi
annual meeting of the State Board of
Horticulture, which will convene in Port
land April 10. All of the Commissioners
of the Bqard will be present at thia meet
ing and much business of Importance will
be transacted. The board meets on the
second Monday of April and of October
of each year.
"'.Fined for Fighting. On a charge of
fighting. Lou Radabaugh was fined $50
yesterday by Municipal Judge Hogue.
Radabaugh was found guilty by a jury.
He was previously fined 550 for breaking
the right arm of Mrs. T. Platz by throw
ing a bottle at a man. It missed Its ob
ject, struck the woman and his arrest
followed. Both cases have been appealed.
College Men at Banquet. In the par
lors of the Y. M. C. A. last night the Col
lege Men's Club held its monthly banquet.
The ladles were admitted, and were also
present at the musical and literary pro
gramme rendered immediately afterward
Professor Breece gave an Interesting talk
on European countries, illustrating by
the-aid of a stereopticon.

Will Talk on Primart. Thomas L.
Green will speak this evening before the
Peoples' Forum at the Knights of Pythias
Hall In the Marquam building on "The
"Direct Primary Nomination." The usual
open disousslon will follow the address.

Purchases Two Tracts. M. L. Hol
brook this week purchased a 60-acre tract
near St. Johns from the Ladd estate,
paying 521,000 for the property. He also
purchased an eight-acre tract from the
"Windle estate for 5SO00. Mr. Holbrook
will have the land cleared and platted.
Jllinoisans Will Meet. Illinolsans
will have a rousing meeting at the Cham
ber of Commerce tomorrow night The
Illinois Society is anxious that ajl for
mer residents of that state shall attend
that the commonwealth may be well rep
resented during the Exposition season.
' Oriental Rugs. The new Oriental Rug

" not guilty.

Dr. J. H. Davis has returned and is at

Masher Pats His Fine: Albert Hertz,
known as the "masher," paid his fine of
525 and is now at liberty with no charge
hanging over him. He was arrested by
Patrolman Gibson for "mashing" women
who passed by Washington-street cigar
stores, and when tried before Municipal
Judge Hogue was found guilty and fined.
His attorney stated that he wished to
appoal, and bonds were .fixed at 5100.
Somehow Hertz went away without fur
nishing the required sum, and when his
five days for appeal were up a bench
warrant was Issued for him. He learned
of this and paid his fine.
Pickpockets Are Bust. While the
Nineteenth Infantry marched by this
morning, and while bands were playing
and people shouting and military ardor
filled the air, pickpockets were busy. F.
Littlehales, employed by the Portland
General Electric Company, was "touched"
for an 5S0 diamond stud. He was standing
at the foot of Gllsan street when he was
robbed. The police were notified by him,
but have no clew to the identity of the
thief.

very novel: while Roscoe Arbuckle will

evening, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H.
A. Nelson In Albany, a reception wa
tendered to President and Mrs. Wallace
Howe Lee before their departure for Se
attle, where Mr. Lee has arranged to en

A. E. Law Will Leave Railroad Work.
ST. PAUL, April 1. It has been official
ly announced that A. E. Law, assistant
general superintendent of the Northern
Pacific Railroad, who for the past six
years has been stationed at Tacoma,
Wash., would retire from his position as
soon as an available man could be found
to fill that position. Mr. Law has been
with the road for about 30 years.
