Begin ning today Postmaster Clark, -will keep thi St. John postofflce open for the de livery of mail between 10 A. M- and 11 A. M. every Sunday. This Is done by the postmaster ior the accommodation of the general public and is not required by the department. The postofflce will shortly be moved from Its present quarters and out-of-the-way place to a room in Coch ran's block, which is central to the busi ness district. New lock-boxes to the number "of 359 are to be installed when the office is moved to the new quarters. The growth of St. John Is felt nowhere more than at the postofflce, where the business continues to Increase rapidly. Contract "Let fob Schoolrooms. Contract for building two classrooms for District No. 2, St. John, was let yesterday by the directors. Railton & Kowen got the contract for J5U.50, their bid being the lowest out of 15 received. The contract has been signed and the rooms are to be completed by January 21. A. penalty- of J5 per day is required for each day after that date that the work is not nnlsbed. The rooms aro merely temporary, as It is expected to build a four-room addition next year, these makeshifts being put np to relieve overcrowding and give the schools facilities for dally attendance, many being out halt the time as It now Is. Promotion for French. S. J. II. French, formerly chief clerk of the gen eral freight department of the Northern Pacific Railroad office, has been appointed freight solicitor to succeed D. H. Bonn, who has resigned. M. 8. Fitzgerald will take Mr. French's former position. These changes, "which are lh accord with the general method of advancement, take effect Immediately. Fire in a Cottage. The cottage at 230 East Seventh street, occupied by H. J. Rupert and owned by J. Gellnsky. was damaged by fire yesterday forenoon to the extent of about $15. There was no Insur ance on the building. A defective flue was the cause of the fire. The prompt response by the fire department saved the place. There was a pleasant entertainment at the Bap tist Chinese Mission, 248 Secosd street last night, when the large nBer oi young pup Ms of the day school aad all or the Sunday school were delighted wltn. a handsome tree, ablaze with ' 'brilliant lights and sparkling with tinsel araas ments. A programme by the Chinese children, consisting of songs, reci tations, drills and musical selections was much enjoyed. Gifts were presented and refreshments served. Miss Morford. the. teacher of the mission day .school, was as sisted by Miss Webb, assistant pastor of the White Temple. The po lice department was notified yesterday of the escape from the Magdalen Homo of two 16-year-old girls, Maud Gould and Laura Ames. The Gould girl was picked up on the streets' after having coma from Tacoma, and Laura Ames Is the young girl taken by the police from Bob Patter son's resort in the North End. Maud Gould is short, hear' set, medlum-com-plexloned and when she escaped wore a light, faded shirt waist, a dark skirt and a red necktie. Laura Ames Is slim and dark of complexion. She wore a blue calico shirt waist, a dark skirt and had white combs in her hair. It la supposed both, girls left the home bareheaded. The police are now looking for the runaways. Card of Thanks.
