THE SUNDAY 0BEG0NIA2T, PORTLAND, JAOTAHY 1, 106. GIN TO ARRIVE Part of Government Ex hibit Is Here. THREE CARLOADS IN YARDS Contain Equipment for the Life Saving Station. AGRICULTURAL EXHIBITS ALSO -Massachusetts State Exhjblts for Lewis and Clark Fair Shipped and Expected Almost Daily Idaho to Follow. Th9 first of the great mass of exhibits lor the Lewis and Clark Exposition ar rived In Portland yesterday morning at 9 o'clock, -when three cars, containing the -first shipment of the Government exhibit, Tolled Into the railway yards near the "Union Station. There was no ceremony attending the arrival o these first ex hibits, but there will be when the first drayload is removed from the cars. -Now that the movement has begun, other shipments will pour in at an early date and thousands of tons will soon be stored away, awaiting the time for unpacking and placing all the displays. These first three cars contained a part of the Government life-saving station and a email part of the agricultural display. In the car containing the life-saving station are a McClellan surfboat, surf guns, tackle and other appliances needed In the construction of the station which Is to be erected and placed in operation on the hank of Guild's Lake. The other two cars contained grasses and grains for the agricultural display. The cars were loaded to capacity and the exhibits care fully packed. Massachusetts Coming Next. The next exhibits to arrive will In all probability bo those of the State of Massa chusetts, which have been shipped and are now on "the way. It la expected that they will arrive within a few days and be immediately unloaded and placed In storage. The Massachusetts commissioner will be in Portland within a few days to attend to the exhibits, or will send a rep resentative. The display from the State of Massa chusetts is said to -be very complete and demonstrative of the history, progress, wealth and resources of that state. Great care has been taken in the selection of ex hibits. The better part of the exhibit at St Louis will be used, and to this will be added now features that will do much to enhance the entire display. The State of Massachusetts, realizing the Important trade relations that may be built up be tween that state and the great Northwest, will spare no funds to give to the Lewis and Clark Exposition an exhibit that will In every way be to the credit of the state. The historical display from Massachu setts will be particularly interesting, showing the part taken by that state In the Revolution and before that period. and also the part taken during the Civil "War and the reconstruction period. Idaho Exhibits Shipped. Exposition headquarters has also been notified that the exhibits from the State of Idaho have been shipped and are now on their way to Portland. It is expected that they will arrive within the present week or the first part of next Idaho will do her best to show visitors to the Exposi tion that Oregon's sister state has much to otter to the Immigrant and home seeker as well as to capital. He was for St years connected with the Youth's Companion, has traveled extensively and has written for Appclton's 12 volumes, among them "The Log House on the Columbia," and the poem entitled "Whitman's Ride for Oregon." tho sales of both of which have been renewed through the coming of the Lewis and Clark Centennial. Before coming to Portland. Mr. Butter worth will finish his contemplated liter ary labors, among them being a series of articles on early Oregon and the prog ress of the country to the present time, "culminating In the exposition. SHOW PANAMA CANAL. . Governor Lane Makes Suggestion for. the Exposition. SALEM, Or., Dec 3L (Special.) Gov ernor Lane, of California, suggests a novel attraction for the Lewis and Clark Fair that would. If practicable, prove to be instructive to a very large proportion of the visitors. He proposes that a large working plan of the Panama Canal be constructed, with locks ta operation, m that the people may see how the canal will he hull ti and how It will convey ships. Probably 39 out of every 100. people who will come hero from- the East have never seen a canal with locks and the exhibi tion would be new, interesting and in structive to them. Governor Lane's sug gestion is made in a letter to Governor Chamberlain. The letter was written for another purpose and this suggestion was made; incidentally. Governor Lane says: "Let me suggest & feature for your Fair. "Great Interest Is now hclllg taken In tho Panama. Canal, and 11 seems to me it might not he difficult 12 in that great lake in front of the grounds you were to build an Isthmus of Panama and a small canal passing through It which would carry the small boats of the lake from one portion to another. Tou could have min iature cities of Panama and Colon at either end of the canal and specimens of the tropical vegetation which grows there. This is a thing no one else has attempted and would be something to talk about" HT EELEES TUENS A 3TEW XEAF Begins the New Year With Entire Control ef the Three Califor : nla Stores. The many-rumors and conjectures con cerning the ultimate adjustment of the affairs of Eilers Piano House In Califor nia, were set at rest . at midnight last night by the receipt by the employes of the house who were celebrating the New Year at tho store, of the following tele gram: Ban Francisco. Wanzer Announces New Chief Assistant, and Cut in Ap- - proprlatlbn Costs Eighteen Official Heads. DISMISSED YESTERDAY. Inspector-William Brandea. G. I". Feed, R. W. Thompson, A. Hemming-. Chalnmen F. S. Walker, W. H. Heus tls, R. Whiting. C E. Harding. TTansltmen O. F. Ramsay, H. G. Richardson, C E. Bronson. Others discharged Several members of the Engineer's force whose names were , Aot divulged received notification of their dismissal yesterday. It was announced last night inan in terview with City Engineer Charles Wanzer that J. R- Hanson is to succeed Chief Assistant City Engineer George Scoggln, who relinquished his duties yes terday, with Former City Engineer W. C. Elliott Mr. Hanson's new position Is in lln& of promotion according to the Civil Serv ice Commission. For a number of years he was In the employ of the" Oregon Ball way & Navigation Company, but lately has been associated with the City En gineer's office as a surveyor. Mr. Wanzer stated that his first work would be ,to familiarize himself with al the duties of his new office. Referring to tfie Tanner Creek sewer, he said: "The Tanner Creek sewer was a very, very agreeable surprise to me. I went out there expecting to find an awful piece of work, when, as a matter of fact the sewer is not a had one at alL It has been most unjustly criticised. I do not mean to infer that those who have criti cised the work have applied their criti cisms to anything but Its faults, but a decent regard for candor Impels me to say that they have overlooked Its virtues. I do not feel that there is any imminent danger attached to tho sewer, but owing to the existing doubt, I cannot say that with any assurance. Found Some Defects. "In some spots I discovered that I could place my arm around without find ing any hacking. Of course If the entire sewer la of such construction the blunder will prove a most deplorable one and one that will entail the expenditure of a great amount of money to rectify. That Is all I have to say except that jr. TL Hanson will succeed George Scoggln as Chief As sistant Engineer. I have no desire to en courage undue publicity, because I feel that the people would much rather hear of new Improvements, aod when I may announce something along these lines J shall gladly tell all I know for publica tion." Last Function Unpleasant One. The last duty which befell Mr. Elliott upon severing his connection with tho City Engineer's office was a most Irk some one. It was found necessary yes terday for Mr. Elliott to notify sev eral of his subordinates of their dis missal Eighteen men were discharged on account of the curtailed appropriation for the year of 1305, which necessitat ed tho reducing of the force in the En gineer's department and, as the Civil Service Commission provides that in an instance of this kind those em ployes longest in service shall be re tained, the- task of selecting the men upon whose heads the ax was to fall devolved upon Mr. Elliott It was with expressions of regret that the retiring City Engineer dis missed the men Insofar as he says he had hoped to relinquish fils office In a perfectly harmonious atmosphere. The names of the discharged men are con tained in the foregoing box. Remembered by Employes. Mr. Elliott and his assistant, George Scoggln were the recipients of two ex quisite tokens of good fellowship and esteem from the employes of the City Engineer's office. Mayor George H. Williams made the presentation in tho presence of about 50 employes of the office. Speaking In behalf of the donors, the Mayor said: "Mr. Elliott you are about to retire from the office of City Engineer, which position you have filled for the past two and a half years and the duties of which you have performed faith fully and honestly. , "Theso men -who have been associat ed with you since you have been In the office kpow better than any others of your fidelity to the public Interests and your kindness and consideration for your subordinates. I join with them in wishing you a happy Now Year and prosperity and happiness in your fu ture life" The presentation was wholly unexpect ed and came as an agreeable surprise to Mr. Elliott His appreciation was so sincerely emotional that It was some moments before he could respond. Mr. Scoggln's surprise was equally as great and he, too, was completely over come by the entirely unexpected honor. The watch presented Mr. Elliott Is a handsome affair, velvet finished gold hunting case and a Walt ham move ment Mr. Elliott's Initials are .en graved on th3 front lid and on tho back inside lid is the inscription: 'To W. COMPLETES BRIDGE REPORT. Expert Will Submit His Findings on Tuesday. Expert Charles S. Blhler will have completed his report on the First and Thurman-street bridges tonight When asked as to his findings with reference to the construction on these two bridges, he stated that he did not care to discuss the matter. He said, however, that the reports would be given to Councilman Rumc lln on Tuesday. From Mr. Blhlers demeanor it was evident that nothing of a startling nature will he divulged In his reports, but nevertheless there is a possibility that some discrepancies have been discovered. Mr. Blhler would neither discuss the stand taken by George H. Howell, member of the Executive Board, or the claims of F. M. Butler, president of the Pacific Construction Company, on the Morrlson-Btrcet bridge controversy. He said, however, that he wished to be understood. "I did not criticise the Pacific Con struction Company's price," said Mr. Bihlcr. "I morely suggested in my re port what was in my opinion a fair figure for tho work." Cupid Keeps Busy Marriages Continue to Grow la Nnmber. Ta ARRIAGE licenses for the year 1S04 i I number 1133. This Is an increase of 133 over the year 1903, which was a record breaker. The number of marriage licenses Issued by the County Clerk In 1502 was 1275. The increase of matrimonial ven tures shows that the population of Port land is "becoming greater each year and also tends to disprove the saying that marriage Is a failure. Licenses Issued for each month during the year were as fol lows: January, S9; February, 104; March, 90; April. 113; May, 101; June, 155; July. 119; August 130; September, 114; October, 155; November, 137; December. 113. Complete Houses to Order. World's Work. A short time ago, a New York firm undertook an. unusual contract It agreed to design and build a house; to make and -arrange the furniture; to decorate the house and to supply It with napery and bed linen, glassware, china and kitchen utensils. They car ried out the contract They even en gaged servants. Dinner was ready to be served when the owner first stepped Into the completed house. The members of the. firm call them selves "contracting designers." They plan, build and furnish houses to suit the character and tastes of the persons that are to occupy them. The house mentioned had been start ed by an architect, and the usual suc cession of decorators, furnishers and other purveyors were to follow. But the owner, who was a seml-lnvalid. turned the whole concract over to this firm. Though plans, drawings and sam ples were shown to the owner, the whole work was completed without his supervision, for he was absent The contract amounted to about $SO,000 and the result was entirely satisfactory. Such details as harmonizing the col oring of the china with the tone of th dlnlngroom and attending to the posi tions and the color of the pictures, were carefully worked out The cost of this undertaking exactly matched the sum set aside for It. The same firm moved a bank Into tem porary quarters over Sunday, built a new building, fitted it with vaults, furniture and furnishings of every kind, even to Ink stands and pin racks, and moved back the books, records and other parapher nalia again over Sunday exactly 30 days later. The total C03t of this contract was $13,000. Here Is a new profession of great possibilities. WANTS HUSBAND TO PAY. Myrtle Howard Says She Lacks Money for Divorce Suit.
