Mr. Henry E. Reed, secretary of the Eewls and- Clark Centennial Exposition Corpora tion, Is authority for the statement that the Exposition when opened to the public on June 1 next. Trill represent a total outlay Including all construction, installation and value of exhibits, etc., of not less than $25, 000,000. Mr. Reed makes this estimate as thevresnlt of a most careful compilation of figures cf each Individual exhibit, and he says estimate Is made on a basis wholly conservative. "Three years ajo," Mr. Keed said to The Oresonlan yesterday, "we hard ly expected to be able to hold much bet ter than a million-dollar Exposition. Six months asro $5,000,000 looked to us to be about the limit; and now It Is ?25,000,000." Property owners along East "Washington, street, be twecn Union avenue and East "Water street, were somewhat shocked this week when they learned that extra cnarge win he mado for installing a plank roadway. They have been figuring on paying 20 cents per cubic yard ror -tnc niiwork, ana had. bolioved the plank roadway was to be thrown In, but on Investigation they find that the roadway will cost them nearly HOOO above the fill. The Pacific Construction Company haa the contract, and Is now ready to haul dirt intd the street by car. "We will have to stand it," said a property owner, "as it is too late to protest, but we were mislead." Medal for Tom Richardson. Tom' Richardson, manager of the Commercial Club, has received a notice written In the Spanish, language, that he has been voted a medal of the third class from the International Philippine jury at St Louis. The humorous part of the matter comes In tho fact that Colonel Richard son knows not why he is thus decorated. He thinks, however, that it Is because of the entertainment of the Honorary Philippine Commission in Portland some time ago. The medal is yet to arrive, but If expected soon, as it has been forwarded from St. Louis. "The Toy makers" was rendered in the Highland Congregational Church Friday night to a crowded house, many remaining stand ing during the programme. Arthur P. Johnson was in charge and lead the choir. Turbine Steamer Not a Failure. The agents of the Allan Line at Glas gow deny the statement from Glasgow December 5. to tho effect that the trials of the Allan Line steamer Victorian, the largest turbine vcssel'yet built, have been so disappolnUng as to raise serious doubts among the Clyde shipbuilders as to tho value of turbines in the case of large ships. The officials also deny the state ment made in the same dispatch that all the efforts mado to get the Victorian ; near contract speed were futile. The of- ficlals of the Cunard Line deny the state- ' mcnt made In a Glasgow dispatch of December 5 that the construction of the turbine engines Intended for the new Cunard Line steamers has been suspended ( pending developments.
