Strable for the League, THE campaign in Portland against the seductive, pernicious cigarette, under the leadership of Rev. Wal lace R. Struble, has reached surprisingly large proportions in the past two weeks. Upwards of 3000 young people have been enrolled as actual members of the Oregon branch of the international league and a widespread Interest has been aroused among parents, educators and citizens generally. Popular mass meetings have been held in many churches of the city coincidental with the lectures in the pub lic schools, and in this way much valu able 'information has been Imparted to elders and friends of the boy respecting the league, its methods and objects. "The anti-cigarette movement," said Mr. Struble to an Oregonlan man, "stands unique among reform enterprises in that it receives the almost universal approba tion of the public. United States Senator Henry M. Teller, of Colorado, says in his Judgment it is the most Important and successful reform movement of this country. The fundamental Idea of the league is the education and forewarning of young people respecting the destructive effects of that form of the use of tobacco known as cigarette-smoking. Lecturers of the league are particular to emphasize the fact that the use of cigarettes induces the inhaling habit which is the cause of the havoc wrought among young men ad dicted to the white pipes. The Awful Habit of Inhaling. "Hon. Charles Bulkley Hubbell, former ly president of the Board of Education of New York City, the nestor .of the anti cigarette movement, in a recent article in the New York Independent speaks with especial force respecting this phase of the question. "Much misapprehension," he says, "exists In the public mind on the subject of the cigarette. We hear It stated not infrequently that the cigarette is deadly, because It contains opium. I am persuaded that the reasons assigned are quite incorrect The manufacturer could not afford to put opium in his prod uct at the price he receives for his goods. None of the cheaper grades of cigarettes contain opium or any of its products. The cigarette is deadly because it breeds the Inhaling habit, which is the foundation of all the evils that accompany Indulgence in this vice. The Juvenile cigarette smoker almost Immediately learns to Inhale the Emoke. Not one cigarette smoker in "20, I venture to assert uses them in any other way. and when once the victim has acquired the Inhaling habit in connec tion with cigarettes, he can seldom secure any satisfaction with pipe. or cigar with out indulging his inhaling propensities. This treatment, when fol lowed in severe cases by mild- doses of CUTICURA RESOLVENT PILLS, to cool and cleanse the blood, is the most speedy, permanent, and economical cure for torturing, disfiguring, itching, burning, bleeding, scaly, crusted, and pimply skin and scalp humours, with loss of hair ever compounded. CURED OF ECZEMA BY CUTICURA I had suffered terrible agony and pain for eight long years from a terrible eczema on the scalp and face. The best doctors were unable to help me, and Lhad spent a lot of money for many remedies without receiving any benefit. My scalp was covered with scabs, my face was like a piece of raw beef, my eyebrows and lashes were falling out, and sometimes I felt as if I was burning up from the terrible itching and pain. I then began treating myself at home, and now my head and face are clear, and I am entirely well. I first bathed my face with Cuticura Soap, then applied Cuticura Ointment to the afflicted parts, and took Cuticura Resolvent for the blood. To my surprise and .joy I was greatly relieved after the first application, and continued use of the Cuticura remedies soon made a complete cure, ' (Signed) Miss MARY F. FAY, Westboro, Mass.
