PART THREE PACiES 17 TO 30 vol. xxni. POETLAM), OREGON. SUKDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 20, 1904. NO. 47. PORTLAND'S LARGEST, FOREMOST STORE THE "DIFFERENT STORE" The Lights Along "The Fair-Way" Mrs. George E. Welter, of 430 East Ash Street, Portland, Or., Awarded the $10.00 in Gold For submitting best name for the new thoroughfare through this store, between Washington and Alder, connecting Fifth and Sixth streets. Mrs. "Welter writes: "I am of the opinion that a name in keeping with, .your style of doing business would be appropriate by choosing for the name of your new avenue or street simply this, 'The Fairway.' " L The name means much. We consider it extremely fitting. A big, busy fair is con stantly going on along its borders; 'tis a shprt cut through between busy streets and leads toward the big 1905 World's Fair; it expresses the conduct of this "Old Homestead" pioneer store toward its patrons at all times. In fact, the "Fairway" is "Multum in Parvo." We desire to thank our hosts of friends who took such an interest in the naming of the street or "way," and sincerely wish that all might have been successful. We deep ly and sincerely appreciate the kind wishes and sentiments expressed and we want every one who took the pains to write us suggestions over 200 were re ceivedto accept the personal thanks of every member of the firm for their kindly interest. We trust we may merit the kind, appreciative words said to us. Words cannot express our gratitude and we only wish we might shower $10 gold pieces upon every one of the writers. A committee consisting of prominent news paper men from the several local papers, decided upon the above name as the most appropriate, only after passing hundreds of others regretfully, for all had merit and some were extremely fitting in many ways. To all we again extend heartfelt thanks; to Mrs. Welter both thanks and congratulations. If the lady will call with proper identification at the adver tising office, at her convenience, we shall take great pleasure in passing to her the reward of merit she has so well earned $10.00 in gold.
