Good singing and well-deserved applause marked the Initial concert'of the Swedish Singing Club Columbia at the Hibernian Hall last night. That much interest is being taken in the work of this new or ganization was evident by the large at tendance, the auditorium being taxed to Its capacity with music-loving people. The programme opened with a selection by a string quartet, composed of the Messrs. Syrene, Nordberg, Noren and Llnde, members of the club, after which followed a few Introductory remarks by the director, C. E. Holt, through whose effort the club has advanced sufficiently to make It eligible to memhereship in the National organization known as "Svenska Sangarforbundet i Amerika." After the first number of the club, Mrs. A. C. Sheldon rendered. In a pleasing manner. "Roses After Rain." by Leh man, and for an encore sang a Swedish folk-song. Miss Antoinette Johnson re cited "Colonel Hooper's Experience" in a wa,y that won her much applause. Messrs. Borqulst and Ingelstad made the hit of the evening with several numbers from "Gluntarne," Wennserstrom's celeberated and ever popular works. Interspersed between the latter and a violin solo by Marcus Skarstedt was "Hor oss Svea," by the club, after which Justice of tho Peace Waldemar Seton recited from Shakespeare. SMITES THE PRESIDENT. Smasher Said to Be Imported by Em ployers In Leatherworkers' Strike. Rather an unusual turn has been taken by the Leatherworkers' Union strike, which has been in effect for some time past- The statement is made by the union men that the employers, who are under boycott, have Imported smashers to adorn the features of union pickets with odds and ends of welts and bruises. The first union man to suffer from the alleged smashers is E. M. Hogue, president of the unlonA Hogue has had one Max Schul plus arrested on a charge of assault and battery. The warrant was Issued by Justice Reid. Hogue said that he waa do ing picket duty near First and Washing ton streets several evenings since, when the defendant approached and swatted him in the face without a word of warn ing. There was no other way to explain the affair, in Hogue's opinion, than that the employers had hired ruffians to ad minister thrashings. Schulplus was arraigned on the charge yesterday morning, entering a plea of not . guilty. His case was set for tomorrow' morning at 9:30 o'clock. OUT 03?
