lawn and University Park begins on
Tuesday of this -week, many people living
In that district who have never known
their house numbers are swarming to the
City Engineer's office to learn where they
live officially. Some don't even know the
name of their street, and have to bring
the deeds to their property to the office
before the location on the map xcan be
determined. Yesterday there was an aver
age of about one of these inquirers every
five minutes. The deputies in the office say
that the city map, which hangs upon the
wall, is showing thin spots from being
looked at so constantly.

At the meeting of the commlssoin yester
fiay the regulations were amended so that
stenographic clerks and chalnmen in the
engineer's department, 17 years old, may
enter the service. It was estimated that
12000 would cover the expenses of the
commission 'for the coming year. This in
cludes printing, stationery and the salary
of the secretary.

Jewish Ladles' -Endeavor Society will lay
the corner-stone of a library, bath and
schoolhouse on the corner of Fifth and
Sheridan streets today at 2 P. M. After
the laying of the corner-stone the public

Thorah, at Sixth and Hall streets, where
prominent speakers, among them D. Soils
Cohen and Dr. Levlne, will deliver ad
dresses. , "
"Want No Improvement. The Xradd
estate and other property-owners have
filed a remonstrance against the proposed
Improvement of East Sixth street from
East Everett to East Grant streets. A
part of the thoroughfare is to be on an
elevated roadway, the high cost of which
Is unnecessary at this time, the property
holders affirm. They also ask that the
assessment district be enlarged.
Tired of Old Stones. Eighteen property-owners
on Burnside street are up in
arms because the city proposes to relay
the old stones which have masqueraded as
a pavement on that street for years. Be
tween Front and Third the boulders are
to be smoothed down, but this will cost
money, so a remonstrance has been filed
in the City Auditor's office.

the terminus of the St Johns' car line at

Niu Chwang "Wants a Fire Engine.
A letter received at tho local Chamber of
Commerce from Consul Henry B. Miller,
at Nlu Chwang, China, announces that the
Russian civil authorities at that place
want bids" on a fire engine, to be delivered,
.there. Tho letter states that as there Is
no house In the city over two stories high
that the engine need not be of very high
pressure. The specifications call for one
that will throw two streams of water to
a height of 50 feet
