THE StTNDAY OBEGONIAN, POBTXiAND, SEPTEMBER 27, 1903. '
THIS IS AN INTERNATIONAL STORE
A WORLD-COMPASSING, DISTANCE-CONQUERING ORGANIZATION to whom a thousand 'miles are but a
single step, i remendous strides have heen made in the development of this "Old Homestead'' RELIABLE STORE
since the daysoi ! itsfounder. Storekeeping has become a developing science none the less accurate because progressive
mIu-l -T-1 GYis one of the points of its remarkable progress. It is much simpler to plod along a well-blazed
path than to strike out boldly into undiscovered territory. Oregon might yet be unknown Portland unfounded and
this great store unheard of, had it not been for the spirit of discovery and progression that stirred the minds of Lewis
and Uark and would not allow the "gray matter" under their hats to rest until they had opened 'the way for later
Pjoneers to come and found their homes in the land where "Rolls the Oregon" and roses bloom throughout the year.
With headquarters at 438 Broadway, New York which serves as a hearthstone for our ten Portland buyers who go on
there twice a year, or oftener, and two resident buyers who make it their abiding place, we reach out to the markets of
the world, collecting the choicest in merchandise from Europe, Asia and our own country. WE LINK TOGETHER
THESE GREAT WORLD MARTS OF FASHION and worthy merchandise with Portfand in Oregon and her 1 best
store. We think nothing of six or even ten-thousand-mile distances if a bag of gold, in the shape of goods that 'will
interest our public, be at the end of the rainbow. Such merchandising is only done by "Congress Stores," such as ours and
those of other metropolitan cities that compass the world markets. It is only possible to a great business and justified
by a store which caters to people of taste" and discernment. This store is a school and studying its stocks, which form
its best adornments, unquestionably develops a love for the tasteful and artistic We go to the fountain-heads for our
merchandise we do not claim to be the only ones to do this, and we beg your lenient consideration for those who make
such silly claims. The world's markets are open to the power of cash ifor those who seek. Bargains are'but "finds"
the accidents of business, or made to order for purposes of stimulating trade. With our forces exceeding that of all
other Portland stores combined of hunters in the Eastern market hunting-grounds is it any wonder we stand ready at
all times to back our claims of best values always best merchandise best quality and the BEST STORE? Operations
in the building of our new five-story annex on Sixth street, are progressing rapidly we will be able to occupy the same
on or before January t, X904. This is but the first move, of a series that will make this

Economy Sheets
Domestic Aisle, 1st Floor.
We learned a trick from the stocking makers,
who weave a double amount of yarn into heel and
toe. We've had sheets made on same, principle the
muslin doubly thick in the center of the sheet. It
leads to the sheet wearing equally well all over.
Many housewives have to split sheets after
awhile and put the center outside; one domestic econ
omist advocates putting the bottom "sheet on the befd
crosswise. That helps, but doesn't entirely overcome
the trouble. The Economy Sheets are used in the
regular way and they take care of themselves.
We have obtained the sale of these sheets for
Portland and urge every housekeeper hotel man and
rooming-house manager to call here during the week
and note their advantages. They are made only of
bleached sheeting, and we show them in every size,
including those for the extra long or wide beds. Their
cost is but a trifle above the ordinary kinds.

tic section. We bought for an enlarged depart
ment, expecting our new annex to be ready for
business ere this we've too much ballast for the
size of our ship, so here goes a lot overboard.
'Twill pay you to watch for these" "unloadings"
and stand under ready to tackle. Tomorrow we
place on sale a large lot of splendid 90c values in
