THE SUKDAY OREGOmA, PORTLAND, MARCH 15, 1903. KILLED BY ELECTRICITY JOSEPH BARTHOLOMEU, A MEETS IXSTAXT DEATH. Was Employed ly Portland General Electric Company and Was "Working on JIIrU Pole. "While working among: electric v.-lres, and Eeated on the cross-arm of a pole SO feet from the ground, yesterday morning;, at Scllwrod, Joseph Bartholomew -about 30 years old. a lineman employed by the Portland General Electric Company, and residing at 44 East Seventh street, was in stantly killed by grasping a live wire car rying 0000 volts of electricity, standing at Joiseili Bartholomeu, lineman, ivixo was lnatantly killed ly electricity yesterday. Meier 8b Frank's Monday Store New The season is a bit tardy this year, and the certainty of always getting the things they want the moment they want them has taught Portland shoppers to wait until the thermom eter goes up to buy their Spring and Summer necessaries. The mercury will go up with a bound some morning and thousands will come on a jump for lighter weight clothing and the multitude of Easter things. This store will be ready of course is splendidly ready today, and will give you the best merchandise the market affords and the most prompt and satisfying service. th srae time on a 000-volt feed wire of the Oregon Water Power & Railway Com psmy. He had unconsciously formed circle of death. Isaac Ennit, one of the dead man's fel low-workmen, climbed up the polo and brougnt ths body down- It was taken to the Sellwood fire station, and, in the hope that some life remained. Dr. Sellwood worked over the body for upward of half an hour, but it was demonstrated beyond all doubt that life was extinct. The body was brought to Coroner Finley's under taking parlors. There will not be an in ouc3t. as it is considered that Bartholo meu met his death by injuries accidentally received. Alon-r with Linemen Sanders, Isaac En nls and John Anderson, Bartholomeu was sent to Sellwood yesterday morning by the Portland General Electric Company to alter pail of the electrical plant neces sary for the better lighting of the sub urb. The workmen desired to take down a box known In electrical parlance as a transformer, the purpose of which Is to alter the voltage from a greater to a lessor pressure. This transformer stood almost at tlw top of the electric light pole, where the lineman afterward met his death. It was dangerous work, unless one won very caroful, but Bartholomeu was known an experienced workman, hav ing worked at hir. trade In Seattle before he came to Portland about three months no. "Be careful and don't get too near that GOOO-volt wire," advised Ennis, as Barthol omeu. started to climb the pole. "All right " sang out the lineman, little dreaming that theso were the last words he was to utter on this earth. He had his body belt around him. but Coroner Fin ley's investigation shows that Bartholo meu did not fasten his body with this belt to th pole, as linemen usually do when working any considerable distance from the ground. Bartholomeu got hold of the block and tackle with which to lower the transformer to the ground, where his mates would receive tho electrical appli ance, and at this time ho was standing on ono of the crossbeams, with his right foot restlne on the trolley feed wire. In a forgetful moment, or probably when he was attacked by a dizziness. Bartholomeu pmsped with his gloved hand the live wire carrying 6000 volts of electricity. He had formed an electrical circle, and immedi ately a bluish flame burst from under his right boot. His left hand fell to his side, and his body swayed on tho cross-beam. The horroi -stricken linemen below re alized what had happened, and Ennis, be ing the nearest to the pole, climbed to the pUctf where the dead man was suspended, nnd took down the body by means of tho block and tackle which had been raised to lower the transformer. The body was hurried to the Sellwood fire station, and Dr. Sellwood worked on the case, but be came satisfied that life was extinct. Ex amination of the middle linger of Barthol omews left hand showed a deep scar about one Inch long and a quarter of an inch desp, where the current had burned him. On bis right foot were three small scars, two of them probably made by nails in lhi bcot being forced from their places. His face was peaceful, and gave no in dication of pain. In one of Bartholomeu's pockets was found a letter with five cents in stamps on tho envelope ready for postage, the ad dress being: "Mr. Bartholomeu, Dun slnane, Ennlscorthy. County "Wrexford, Ireland." it Is presumed that this Is a letter written by Bartholomeu to a rela tive In the Old Country. The sum of 40 cents was found In his clothing. Barthol omeu, U Is understood, was born in New Jersey, and he followed the sea In early life. On his left arm are tattooed repre sentations of of a shield and stars, with the words. "True Love." He leaves a widow and one little girl. At the time of the ac cident Mrs. Bartholomeu was visiting friends who live near Grcsham. and she did nor hear of her husband's death until a messenger from the city arrived late yesterday afternoon and told her of her loss. Bsrtbclomeu was a member of the Electrical Workers' Union, and a man of splendid physique. The In creased use of heavy cotton fabrics for waists and costumes forces this action. The moral is plain. The "flat-Iron" turban, named after the new building of peculiar form at Broad way and Twenty-third street, New York, Is a medium shape, coming to a de cided point in front. Brim and crown of these turbans are of different materials. Cream white mohairs axe still scarce and the Bradford market shows an ad vance owing to the strong position of the raw material. White, cream and ivory taffetas are scarce and colored taffetas are none too plentiful. In addition to peroxiline braids, which are shown In a great variety of styles, there are knotted-flber braids and the chrysanthemum braid in a narrow width, which Is nothing more than a cord. Colored taffetas kre gaining in popular ity and creams and ivory whites are be coming scarce in the general market. Modifications of the Russian and the Spanish turban are very attractive. The chief novelty in their trimming is toe pendant ornamentation.
