ENGLISH LIFE IN PARIS
THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING COLONY
AT THE FRENCH CAPITAL.
To a. Greater Extent Than Any Other
Foreign Contingent There It Pre
serves Its Individuality.
The English and American colony Is by
far the largest of all the foreign colonies
In Paris, and though English and Amer
ican people certainly love and appreciate
Paris the most, they are probably of all
strangers -within our gates those who live
the most apart from their French neigh
bors, -whom they never understand' and
whoso life they never assimilate, says a
writer In the London Leader. It is
probably owing to the fact of their non
adaptibllity to exterior influences and
their usual lack of moral and mental as
similation that Englishmen make such
admirable colonists. They take with
them everywhere their own habits and
customs, and whatever spot of ground
they inhabit in the whole wide world,
be it in a civilized country or among
barbarians, that spot then becomes Eng
land because Englishmen live there. The
same remark does not, however, apply to
the Americans, who are much more as
similative. In Paris, for Instance, the rich
American residents eventually, though by
degrees, merge into French life. Of
course, it must be taken Into account that
the separation between the Anglo-Saxon
colonies and the people of Paris Is owing
at least as much to the excluslveness of
the French as to the nonadaptablllty of
the Saxon element. The French bourgeois
looks upon the English or American set
tler with distinct distrust. As France is
the music hall of the world, the good
bourgeois thinks that the stranger has
come to amuse himself at the Moulin
Rouge or at Maxim's, and does not admit
him to his familiar hearth even when he
comes armed with letters of introduction.
Besides the class of rich Americans who
come to reside in Paris for a few years
there Is another class of Anglo-Saxon res
identsboth English and American which
Is by far the most interesting. I speak of
those who consider Paris the great Alma
Mater of art, and come to study. Large
numbers of English and American stu
dents settle in Paris for three or four
years in the pursuit of some art music,
singing, painting, sculpture and architect
ure being the principal subjects studied
by them. They cdme for work alone, and
not to go into society. The men some
times have French comrades, who live
the outdoor life of the French student
and entertain their Anglo-Saxon friends
at the cafes and beer rooms of the cap
ital, but do not take them into their
homes. As for the women students, who
live alone in lodgings, pensions, or small
furnished flats, living a free, Bohemian
life, they very rarely make friends among
French girls, because their free mode of
existence strikes terror Into the hearts of
French parents. I have known many
English and American girl students who
have lived in Paris during their student
days, three or four years, and who have
even Anally settled here, who have never
had a single French woman friend. But,
although they keep very much to them
selves, forming a class apart, they are
none the less merry for that, and they
enjoy with keen relish all the advantages
of what might be called exterior Paris,
such as the museums, the large, free state
schools, the cheap art schools, the cates,
etc., which are open to the stranger as
well as to the French resident.
There are great numbers of Anglo-Saxon
students in the architectural schools and
in the ateliers of the Beaux Arts, and all
the free lectures given in connection with
the establishment are free to students of
all nationalities. At the Sorbonne all
those lectures which are not specially re
served for those who have already "taken
a preliminary degree are also free and
open to all, and, indeed, there is a spe
cial series of lectures at the Sorbonne
which have been organized for the bene
fit of foreign students only, for Paris
welcomes the youth of all countries to
the educational advantages which she of
fers to her own sons, and the finest and
most celebrated professors of the world
at the Sorbonne, in the schools of art,
etc., give their services and the benefits
of their wonderful teaching free gratis
and for nothing, and to one and all alike.
The colony of Anglo-American students
is scattered all over Paris, but principally
In the Latin Quarter, where most of the
schools and ateliers are to be found.
There are two or three endowed homes
for English girl students, but the ma
jority prefer to live In cheap lodgings,
and very often two or three of them club
' together and set up a small establishment
of their own. If they are to reside some
time in Paris, they take a low-rented flat
somewhere in the vicinity of Montpar
nasse, furnish It cheaply, and generally
either do their own housework or have a
woman servant In for a few hours a
day, who keeps the house clean and pre
pares them their breakfast. Their other
meals they take at small restaurants or
at creameries, where they go together In
groups. Some of these establishments
cater for this special class of customer.
and the eating-house assumes the propor
tions of a club, where English-speaking
students meet and discuss their art over
their simple meals. Here you can get a
luncheon or dinner for 1 franc 50 centimes,
or 1 franc 75 centimes, consisting of a
hors d'oeuvre or a plate of soup, a plate
of meat and vegetables, a small piece of
cheese and a cup of black coffee. Some
times even you can get red wine as well,
Girl students whose means are limited
can get a furnished room In the Latin
Quarter for 40 francs a month; when two
or three friends club together and take a
flat, the general lodging expenses, includ
ing the servant's wages and concierge's
fee, generally work out at about the same
figure per head. But even when it comes
to a little more than that, the advantages
of more freedom and Independence have
to be considered.
HE- KNEW DICKENS.
Wallace Yates Recalls Incidents In
Life of the Novelist.
BALLSTON, Or., Dec. 22. (To the Edi
tor.) The recent death of George Dolby,
long-time manager for Charles Dickens,
recalls some incidents which may be of
interest to those who are eager for anec
dotes in which public men figure. When
I was a boy our family resided just
across the road from the residence of
George Dolby, in a suburb of a town in,
the West of England immortalized by
Pope. One Summer', about 1SG7, I think,
Mr. Dickens came down for a few days'
visit to the Dolbys, bringing with him a
little black Danish pony, no larger than
a Shetland, as a present for Dolby's eld
est boy. The boy was too young to man
age th'e pony, which was unbroken, so It
was" turned Into my brother's pasture,
which was partly in orchard. The little
fellow was quite gentle, apparently, so,
boylike, I jumped on his back one day
without bridle or halter. But he darted
off at full speed, I holding to the mane,
until Ignomlniously swept off his back
by a sturdy apple limb under which the
pony darted. y
I well remember seeing Mr. Dickens sit
ting on the lawn with the Dolby family,
the few evenings he was there, usually
with one of the children on. his knee. For
some years following that "hallowed"
lawn was the regular croquet ground for
us young folks.
George Dolby married Marian Ursula
Moes, daughter of the church organist In
that same town. She was a singer of ex
ceptional ability, who, before marriage,
sung in concerts in many English cities.
The Moss family were all accomplished
musicians. WALLACE YATES.
