    UNIONS MAY MERGE
1 GIFT HINTS !
Movement Started for a Cen
trarOrganization, TO TAKE IN PACIFIC COAST
Object Is to Bring tine VariouN
Branches of Organized Labor Into
Closer Affiliation so as to. Pre
sent a Solid Front.
A movement to unite all of the labor
unions of the Pacific Coast Into one cen
tral organization Is being planned by the
local labor-leaders. There is such 'an or
ganization among the unions connected
with longshoremen's work, but the other
unions are affiliated with the State Feder
ation of Labor and then with the Ameri
can Federation, making thus no closer
connection between the unions of the
Coast than there is between the unions
of the East and the West. There are many
occasions when it would be to the advant
age of organized labor to be able to act
from one central body in the name of all
the unions of the Coast, and If Portland
labor leaders are successful In the move
ment they are starting this will be the
condition in the future. There will be a
meeting of the "Washington State Federa
tion of Labor in Seattle, January 5, and a
large delegation will go from here to be In
attendance at the convention. At the
same time the California State Federation
will meet in Los Angeles. The Oregon
State Federation of Labor will hold its
convention in La Grande on the first Mon
day in May. It is the plan of the local
labor leaders to take the matter of a
Coast federation up with the "Washington
convention and induce tlfem to appoint
delegates to the Oregon Federation. Tele
grams will be sent to Los Angeles asking
the California Federation to lake a similar
action. If both organizations take an In
terest in this movement, as it is thought
that they will, there is no doubt but that
the organization will be formed. Dele
gates from the three states will meet at
La Grande in May, and the plan can then
be consummated.
G. Y. Karry is very enthusiastic over the
plan, and states that at least 100 members
will go to Seattle to be present when the
matter Is brought before the Washington
convention.
"There are often times," said he, "when
we are In much need of such an organiza
tion as this one will be. In the recent
dry-dock controversy it was argued
against us that shipbuilders In other ports
are working more hours -than they are in
Portland. If we had a Coast federation
we could so regulate this work that the
Tiours and wages would be the same along
the Entire Coast The Pacific Coast Fed
eration of the Longshoremen is proving to
be very satisfactory. The organization
we propose would take in organized labor
of every craft and would bring the three
sister states into a close affiliation.

CANNOT STAND COLD.
Hainan Vitality "Will Eventually Suc
cumb to Very Lovr Temperature.
"The cold of Dawson is too intense not
to have a baleful effect upon any man
sooner or later," said Jim Hall, a rugged
pioneer of the Klondike, who registered
at the Portland, yesterday, on his way
from the northern gold fields to the sun
ny climate of Southern California. For
six years Jim Hall has been .a figure In
the life of the Yukon metropolis. For him
no ccld was too Intense, no journey too
long, no trail too arduous. The boasted
terrors of the Chllkoot Pass, nor the
racing waters of the "White Horse Rapids
could delay this tireless argonaut when
once he "struck the trail." But to brave
these and kindred -hardships is too great
a tax on human vitality. Jim Hall is a
sick man, and is now seeking to recover
Us health In a climate which has been
widely heralded as the best on earth.
"They say," said Mr. Hall yesterday,
"that many people need no furs the first
"Winter that they spend In Northern Rus
sia. They do not find the great cold so
hard to bear as they expected. But the
second year they feel the need of furs.
Their systems refuse to make the effort
necessary to do without them again. And
it is much the same in Alaska. I would
never attempt to undergo the perils and
hardships that I have experienced in the
past 6 gain, not if I were promised all the
gold that the Klondike ever had buried
beneath its sands. Enoughs enougn.
Elks Attend Vancouver Initiation.
There was a hot time In Elkdom last
night. Or at least some 100 Elks who
had gathered at the foot of Alder street
to await the starting of the boat tor Van
couver said there was going to be, and
all seemed to be in the spirit of the oc
caslon. A new lodge was to be formed in
Vancouver, and there were over 40 mem
bers to be initiated into the secrets of the
order. District Deputy Grand Exalted
Ruler Walter R. McFarland, of Aberdeen,
Wash., was a member of the party, and
was to have charge of the work of or
ganization. Portland Lodge of Elks, No.
142, had been asked to conduct the cere
monies, and a boat was chartered to
take them on the trip. From the large
delegation that was sent to Vancouver, it
would seem that Portland Elks are very
much Interested in tne welfare of their
brothers across the river, and, from the
general expressions of the delegation, it
is supposed that the" Vancouver boys wero
initiated into every phase of the order
that is known to their more experienced

Special Bnrsrains in Fine Pianos.
Unlike some of the other dealers, we
have not gotten In a lot of cheap pianos
to use as bait for unsuspecting, confiding
customers. We have not made such
preparations for the Christmas trade, as
we do not believe in that kind of business.
Our regular line of pianos consists of
fifteen different makes, and with the dif
ferent styles of each, comprises a stock
of over 75 of the finest pianos in the
world. These are not special pianos, but
pianos we handle always pianos we guar
antee, back up and stake our reputation
on pianos known the world over, and we
challenge any one to undersell us. or even
come within $50 of our prices. Why take
chances on some cheap, obscure, or even
unknown make of piano, when you can
get a standard make from us for about
the same price, or perhaps less money?
For Instance, the famous STEINWAY,
used and indorsed by all the monarchs of
Europe, and all the leading concert pi
anists of both hemispheres. Other well
known makes that we carry are the
