SOCIETY ON A I, ARK.
A "Farmer's Dinner and the "Qpry"
Furnished Fan for a Frolic.
Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Charles A. Otis, -Jr.. the' millionaire
hacker of James K. Eackett, the actor,
and wife entertained 40 members of the
'four hundred" at a farmers dinner at
their home on Dratenahl avenue. They
drove to the Otis home In two consign
ments, one being conveyed in a stage
coach that had been used in 1820, and the
other in a vehicle that rattled like the
one-horse shay driven by Senator Hanna s
son. Dan.
On the table cornstalks and straw were
heaped, while over the gas jets big jack
o'lanterns leered. Old-fashioned stone
pitchers held new cider. Oyster soup,
roast turkey and "pumpkin pie were the.
dishes.
After "supper" everybody went to the
"opry." A theater was fitted up in one of
the upstair rooms, and here many funny
stunts were indulged in. They all had
their store clothes on. Herbert Wright
-wore a "Prince Albert" coat, felt hat,
chin whiskers, and one trousers leg was
stuffed Into his boot in the good, old
fashioned way.
R. H. York wore a straw hat with the
crown partially absent. Dan Hanna was
clad in blue overalls, a bald wig, long hair
and whiskers. Sirs. Hanna appeared in a
sunbonnet and a red dotted gown. The
others were made up after a general
huckster design.

Da You See Three
Moves Ahead?
If so, you can appreciate the
future of St. Johns. Portland
Is destined to become a great
city. St. Johns is Its only sub
urb which has river and rail fa
cilities for industries and
commerce. The overflow of
Portland's residents may divide
themselves among many sub
urbs ; but the overflow of Port
land's INDUSTRIES must go
to St. Johns. There is no
other place for them. This
process has already com
menced. The O. R. & N. rail
road to St. Johns has been
completed less than nine
months, yet four industries are
already operating at that point,
while two sawmills have ob
tained sites and will build
within one year. In addition
the steam motor street-car line
has been transformed to an
electric line and vill be In op
eration in a few weeks. No
suburb of Portland can show
as much relative advancement
during Jthe time.
