Scavengers DuiiP Sawdust. Several
complaints have been made of late that
ecavengers and others have dumped saw
dust, shavincs and uaDer under elevated
roadways in different parts of the city,
and have tried to -destroy evidence of
their violation of the ordinance by burn
toe the material. In one. case hey nearly
destroved a bridce. Friday afternoon
cawdust was thrown under the Eleventh
street bridce near Pettygrove street, and
the scavenger set It on lire. The smoke
attracted the attention of Sidewalk In
spector LIllls, who happened to be in the
neighborhood, and who stepped down into
the gulch and discovered a miniature
conflagration. Without stopping to make
any further investigation, ho notified the
fire department by telephone and hose
corpany No. 6 was ordered out. Streams
were turned on the fire Just as the flames
were reaching the oiling. The damage
done was slight, but It was sufficient to
cause the city officers to keep a sharp
lookout for the men who are dumping
thA sawdust under the brldses. and if
they are caught they will be severely
dealt with.

Pluck Out the Beam First. The pro
posed action of .the "grocerst In attempt
ing to have an ordinance passed that, will
prohibit the peddlers from selling fruit
on the streets, has, brought up the ques
tion of how the Civic Improvement Asso
ciation will regard the situation. Thomas
McCusker. president of the association.
last night said: "To me It seems mat
the action which is proposed by the gro
cers is very unreasonable from the stand
they have taken. There Is now an ordi
nance to the effect that only a limited
part of the sidewalk can be used for the
purpose of making a display, or to ac
commodate the Arms. The grocers iolate
this ordinance all of the time, and It Is
next to impossible to make them keep
within the prescribed limits. It seems to
me that it Is out of place for men who
continually violate the laws of the city
to ask that an ordinance be passea tnar.
will prevent honest, law-abiding citizens
from making a living at their husiness.
When asked as to how the association
would stand in the matter, ho saidi- ""Wo
do not wish to take a stand in this mat
ter. All that wo wish to do is to see that
the ordinances are enforced. The ped
dlers arc privileged by the city and pay
for what they are granted. The grocers
do not .pay the city anything for the use
of the sidewalks, but persist In obstruct
ing the public traffic I think they should
try to live up to the laws of the city
more carefully before they ask that laws
are passed to benefit their business."
Jefferson Street Obstructed. Jef
ferson street, between Fourth and Fifth,
which is not any too wide for the amount
of traffic passing over It, has been oo
structed tho nast day or two by about 10
loads of slabwood which had been dumped
upon it. The owner of the wood does
not seem to be in any hurry to remove
it from the street, and the policeman on
the beat has not yet discovered It, or If
he has he has not enforced tho city ordi
nance governing the obstruction of
streets. As the wood lies, it occupies
about 50 feet of the length and more
than one-half tho width of the street In
places, and teams coming from opposite
directions have some difficulty In pass

JUDICIOUS, BUYING OF- FIX
TURES.
To a person of taste some styles of gas
and electric fixtures wouUVnot be accept
able at any price stock fixtures that look
cheap." Still you way want the price low.
We prepared for this want by having the
factory make us special designs combin
ing the artistic charm- that you instantly
recognize when you see one of our fix
tures. Wo handle such quantities of them
that we can put them up Jn your house at
as low prices as the stock cheap fixtures
have been selling. Thus, for example, we
literally mean It when we offer you an $S
value for $5 75; when we say we will
show you a fixture for" $2 50 that his the
style, material and workmanship of a $o
fixture. Many years' experience have
ripened our buying wisdom. You may
have tho benefit, and It Is true that you
would be foolish to decide upon your fix
tures without informing yourself thor
oughly by inspection of our beautiful line
of goods. THE JOHN BARRETT CO.
