MRS. NATHA.N AND UNION.
LABEL.
PORTLAND. Or., Aug. 2. (To tho Ed
itor.) I am quoted as saying In the pub
lished account of my lecture:
"Sirs. Nathan said that the label o the
trades unions protected tho purchaser to
e considerable extent, but pointed out
that it the garment had in addition the
label of the Consumers' League there
would be additional security."
1 made no such statement, and the la
bor unions took offense at the published
account. I have reason to believe that It
was largely owing to pressure brought
by the. Consumers' League that the
"United Garment Workers, at their last
annual meetftig, resolved to give their
label to those manufacturers only -who
Xiau all uicir ui& uuuv w uic jiicuucii
of the factory- Before that time the
union label -was a guarantee of union
hours and union -wages, but -was no guar
antee that the garments had not been
.made in sweatshops. At present, how
ever, the additional guarantee is assured
that the garment Is free from Infectious
germs. The Consumers' League label is
placed on woman's white underwear,
shirtwaists, skirts, corsets, etc. The
workers on this line of goods are largely
women and'ery young girls, and have
been too weak to form a union, and there
has, therefore, never been a union label
for these garments. The two labels, It
can thus be seen, do not conflict. It
would be unreasonable to ask manufac
turers to use two labels, and tho Con
sumers' League has never suggested such
a proposition. MAUD NATHAN.
